Popular spots go early, says Love Taupō

Taupō Supercars, the ITM Taupō Super 440, is expected back at Taupō International Motorsport Park in April 2027, but Supercars has not announced the 2027 dates yet (2026 ran from 10 to 12 April). In our live Auckland search for 7 to 13 April 2027, campervans started from NZ$33 a night and self-contained vans with a toilet from NZ$78 a night. Self-contained motorhomes and caravans can stay at the Taupō Racing Club Oval Campground, 350 m from the circuit, which cost from NZ$295 a site in 2026, and Auckland is about 3.5 hours' drive away.

Which rental brands suit Taupō Supercars?

Sixteen brands returned campervans in our live Auckland search for 7 to 13 April 2027, 72 vehicles in all: Lucky Rentals, Britz, Apollo, Mighty, Campervan Village, Travellers Autobarn, Waka Campa, Maui, Star RV, Spaceships, Jucy, Happy Campers, Eurocampers, LyLo Road Trips, Trekker Adventures and Escape Rentals. The big question is where you will sleep. The trackside Oval Campground only took self-contained motorhomes and caravans in 2026, so pick a certified self-contained van if you want to walk to the track. Any van works if you book a Taupō holiday park instead.

  • Budget sleeper vans: Lucky Rentals, Happy Campers, Jucy, Escape Rentals and Spaceships start from NZ$33 to NZ$62 a night for 2 berth vans with a bed and basic kitchen but no bathroom. These suit a holiday park stay, not the Oval Campground.
  • Compact self-contained vans: Campervan Village, Lucky Rentals, Spaceships, Happy Campers, Eurocampers and Travellers Autobarn list self-contained 2 to 4 berth vans from NZ$68 to NZ$172 a night. Escape (NZ$78, on request), Jucy Condo (NZ$115, sleeps 4) and Happy Campers Happy Horizon (NZ$117) add a toilet.
  • Toilet and shower on board: Lucky Rentals Rambler from NZ$127, Jucy Chaser from NZ$184 and Waka Campa Explorer Saver (toilet and outdoor shower, sleeps 4) from NZ$177, then Mighty, Star RV, Apollo, Britz and Maui motorhomes from NZ$269 to NZ$409 a night.
  • Groups and families: 6 berth vans from Jucy (Chill'd Big Kahuna, NZ$189), Mighty (Big Six, NZ$329), Apollo (Euro Deluxe, NZ$361) and Maui (River, NZ$409).
  • 4WD and premium: Trekker Adventures rents rooftop tent Hiluxes and Defenders from NZ$206, which the motorhome-only Oval Campground is unlikely to accept, and a self-contained Toyota Hilux Camper from NZ$356. LyLo Road Trips vans run NZ$227 and the Eurocampers Euro Paradise tops the list at NZ$879.

Since 7 June 2026, DOC says every vehicle needs a green warrant to be certified self-contained, and the toilet must be fixed to the floor. Some listings show a portable toilet (Mighty Highball and Double Down) or no toilet at all next to a self-contained label, so ask the brand for the van's current warrant before you book a campground site. How much does campervan hire cost for Taupō Supercars?

Prices are NZ$ per night from our live Auckland search on 19 October 2026 for a pickup on Wednesday 7 April 2027 and return on Tuesday 13 April 2027 (72 vehicles, NZ$33 to NZ$879 a night). The dates assume the race weekend falls on 9 to 11 April, so search again once Supercars confirms the 2027 dates.

  • Budget 2 berth, no bathroom: NZ$33 (Lucky Rentals Rodeo), NZ$39 (Happy Campers Happy Trail), NZ$46 (Jucy Crib), NZ$51 (Escape Standard, sleeps 3, on request) and NZ$62 (Spaceships Beta Original, on request).
  • Self-contained 2 to 4 berth: NZ$68 (Campervan Village Freedom Camping Aventus 2, on request), NZ$70 (Lucky Rentals Roadie, sleeps 3), NZ$80 (Spaceships Beta 2S), NZ$93 (Lucky Rentals Rover, sleeps 4, on request), NZ$108 (Happy Campers Happy Cruise, sleeps 4), NZ$139 (Eurocampers Euro Escape, sleeps 4) and NZ$140 to NZ$172 (Travellers Autobarn Chubby, Hitop, Kuga and Hi5).
  • With a toilet: NZ$78 (Escape, on request), NZ$115 (Jucy Condo, sleeps 4), NZ$117 (Happy Campers Happy Horizon), NZ$159 (Travellers Autobarn Kuga) and NZ$177 (Waka Campa Explorer Saver, sleeps 4).
  • Toilet and shower: NZ$127 (Lucky Rentals Rambler), NZ$184 (Jucy Chaser), NZ$269 (Mighty Deuce), NZ$276 (Star RV Polaris 2), NZ$295 (Apollo Euro Tourer), NZ$306 (Britz Venturer) and NZ$336 (Maui Ultima).
  • 4 to 6 berth: NZ$189 (Jucy Chill'd Big Kahuna, sleeps 6), NZ$253 (Britz Voyager, sleeps 4, toilet), NZ$322 (Mighty Double Up), NZ$329 (Mighty Big Six, sleeps 6), NZ$361 (Apollo Euro Deluxe, sleeps 6, and Britz Odyssey and Wanderer, sleeps 4) and NZ$409 (Maui River, sleeps 6).
  • 4WD and premium: NZ$206 (Trekker Single Tent Hilux, rooftop tent), NZ$356 (Trekker Toyota Hilux Camper, self-contained), NZ$412 (Trekker 2020+ Defender) and NZ$879 (Eurocampers Euro Paradise).

What the nightly rate leaves out

  • Insurance excess options, kilometre charges, one-way fees and extras such as bedding and kitchen kits. We did not price these.
  • Race tickets. 2027 prices are not out yet. In 2026 Trackside General Admission started at NZ$52 a person a day, the Turn 8 Reserved Grandstand at NZ$299 and the Backstraight Grandstand at NZ$319 for 3 days, with Pit Lane Walk (NZ$42) and Paddock Pass (NZ$40) upgrades, all sold through Ticketek NZ.
  • Trackside camping. Oval Campground sites started at NZ$295 plus booking fees in 2026, and a site did not include Supercars tickets.

Where can you camp in a campervan at Taupō Supercars?

The official trackside option is the Oval Campground, run by the Taupō Racing Club in the middle of the Taupō Horse Racing Club track, next door to the circuit and about 350 m from the Supercars action. Supercars linked to it from the 2026 event page, and it is the only place we found where you can sleep in a van within walking distance of the track.

Oval Campground rules from the 2026 event

  • Self-contained motorhomes and caravans only: no tents. Make sure your rental van is certified self-contained before you book a site.
  • Price: two site sizes from NZ$295 plus booking fees in 2026, and you choose your exact spot at checkout. A site does not include Supercars tickets.
  • People: a maximum of 6 people on a single site.
  • Dates and check-in in 2026: the campground opened on Thursday 9 April and closed on Monday 13 April. Check-in was only on Thursday from 12pm to 5pm and Friday from 10am to 6pm, and all campers had to leave by 10am on Monday.
  • 2027: no 2027 campground details are published yet. Love Taupō advises booking early because the best spots go fast, so watch the Taupō International Motorsport Park site and Supercars.

We could not find published power, water or vehicle length details for the Oval Campground, so ask the club before you book a large motorhome.

No camping in the event car park

Parking on the Taupō Gliding Club airstrip is free on race days, but Supercars says camping, motorhomes and caravans are not permitted there overnight. Fines apply and vehicles will be towed.

Taupō holiday parks

If the Oval Campground is full, or your van is not self-contained, book a holiday park in town and drive or take the shuttle to the track. The circuit is 8.5 km from the Taupō town centre, about 10 minutes by car.

  • Taupo TOP 10 Holiday Park: 16 Rangatira Street, 1.5 km from the town centre and lake, with a heated pool, a thermal plunge pool and hot tubs.
  • Taupo DeBretts Spa Resort: 76 Napier-Taupo Road (SH5), with campervan and RV sites, hot springs and hydroslides.
  • Lake Taupo Holiday Resort: camping and accommodation at the home of Lusty's Lagoon, with thermally heated pools and a swim-up bar.
  • Great Lake Holiday Park: between Taupō town and Acacia Bay, among forest and farmland.
  • Motutere Bay TOP 10 Holiday Park: lakeside sites halfway between Taupō and Tūrangi, if town is full.

Taupō District freedom camping rules

  • Under the Taupō District Council Freedom Camping Bylaw 2023, certified self-contained vehicles may stay overnight on council land, except reserves and Ferry Road. Display your current self-containment warrant.
  • The limit is three nights and/or four days in one place, and the council can fine you NZ$400 for a breach.
  • Non-self-contained campers may only use three council areas: Hipapatua Recreational Reserve (Reid's Farm) in Taupō, Mangakino Recreation Reserve and Whakamaru Recreation Reserve.
  • Empty tanks for free, 24 hours a day, at Riverside Park, Two Mile Bay Boat Ramp and Stag Park in Taupō, or Mata Place in Kinloch.

DOC land and state highways follow their own rules. Read the council freedom camping page and map before you park up.

How do you get from Auckland to Taupō Supercars in a campervan?

Taupō sits on State Highway 1 in the middle of the North Island, about 3.5 hours' drive from Auckland according to Love Taupō. By our routing estimate it is about 273 km from central Auckland to the circuit, or about 262 km from the Auckland Airport area where most rental depots are. Allow 4 to 5 hours in a motorhome with stops.

The route

  • State Highway 1: south from Auckland through the Waikato past Hamilton, then on to Taupō. It is the main road between Auckland and Wellington.
  • Via Rotorua: the Thermal Explorer Highway route through Rotorua is a scenic alternative and makes a good return leg. Supercars directs drivers from Rotorua along Broadlands Road to the circuit.

Reaching the circuit

Taupō International Motorsport Park is at 463 Broadlands Road, Rotokawa, 8.5 km from the town centre. In 2026 drivers coming off SH1 used the Centennial Drive off ramp, turned left onto Rakaunui Road and right onto the Off Road Highway into the car park. There was no access to the car park from Centennial Drive.

  • Parking: free parking on the Taupō Gliding Club airstrip, with no overnight camping.
  • Shuttle: in 2026 a free shuttle ran continuously from Kaimanawa Reserve on Roberts Street, Taupō, where you can park. You need a valid ticket to ride.
  • Town parking: the council's extra long vehicle parks on Ferry Road by the lakefront are handy for shopping in town, but camping is not permitted on Ferry Road.
  • Traffic: check the Taupō District Council alerts and the NZ Transport Agency journey planner for road changes around race weekend.

A 7 day Taupō Supercars campervan trip from Auckland

This plan matches the dates we searched, 7 to 13 April 2027, and assumes the race weekend falls on Friday 9 to Sunday 11 April. Supercars has not confirmed 2027 dates, so move it to fit the real weekend once it is announced.

Day 1, Wednesday: pick up in Auckland

Collect your van, check it is certified self-contained if you plan to use the Oval Campground, and stock up on food and drinks. Head south on State Highway 1 and stay at a holiday park in the Waikato.

Day 2, Thursday: drive to Taupō

Finish the drive to Taupō, about 3.5 hours from Auckland in total. In 2026 the Oval Campground check-in ran from 12pm to 5pm on Thursday, so aim to arrive by early afternoon, or book a holiday park in town.

Day 3, Friday: first day at the track

Walk 350 m from the Oval Campground to the circuit, or take the free shuttle from Kaimanawa Reserve if you are staying in town. In 2026 Friday was a practice day for Supercars and the support categories, so it is a quieter day to learn the circuit.

Day 4, Saturday: race day

Championship races ran from midday on Saturday in 2026. Grab a grandstand seat or a spot on the mounds, and bring a jacket for the evening.

Day 5, Sunday: race day and a lake swim

Final races, then cool off at the Taupō lakefront or soak in the hot pools at a thermal holiday park.

Day 6, Monday: Taupō to Rotorua

Pack up and leave the Oval Campground by 10am (the 2026 rule), empty your tanks at a free dump station, and drive about 75 km to Rotorua for geysers, mud pools and a holiday park night.

Day 7, Tuesday: back to Auckland

Drive about 215 km, roughly 3 hours, from Rotorua to Auckland and return the van. Check depot closing times before you book flights.

Taupō Supercars campervan tips

  • Book trackside camping early: Love Taupō says the best Oval Campground spots go fast. A site does not include race tickets, so buy both as soon as 2027 sales open.
  • Hire a certified self-contained van: the Oval Campground only takes self-contained motorhomes and caravans, and Taupō's freedom camping rules for council land also need a current self-containment warrant.
  • Leave the drinks in the van: you cannot bring your own alcohol into the circuit, no glass is allowed, and the event is cashless with no ATMs. Limited food and soft drinks for your own use are fine.
  • Watch the weather: in 2026 Supercars cancelled the Sunday at Taupō as Cyclone Vaianu approached. Check MetService and the Supercars site each day, and pack wet weather gear.
  • Bring ear protection: Supercars warns the circuit is loud, so pack earplugs or earmuffs, especially for children.
  • Use the free dump stations: Riverside Park, Two Mile Bay and Stag Park in Taupō are free and open 24 hours, so empty your tanks before you head home.
