The minimum driver age is usually 21, although some companies accept drivers aged 18+. The easiest way to check availability is to enter your correct driver age when searching — this will show the campers you’re eligible to hire. Please note: some brands may apply a young driver surcharge.

Probationary licenses are generally not accepted, though some companies may allow provisional license holders (with age restrictions). You must present your license along with those of any additional drivers when picking up your vehicle. If your license is not in English, you’ll need an International Driving Permit (IDP) or a certified translation alongside your original license. Without these documents, you will not be able to rent the vehicle. Please refer to the Campers terms and conditions.

The best time to rent a campervan in Australia largely depends on the region you plan to explore, as the country spans multiple climate zones.
In the southern parts of Australia — Campers are suited across the year, although winter in Tasmania does get cold making for a different experience. Spring, summer, and early autumn months, can offer warm and pleasant weather perfect for road trips, beach visits, and outdoor adventures. The peak tourist season is between December and January and in school holidays, which can differ by state. Always booking early is recommended.
For the tropical northern regions — such as Queensland’s far north, the Northern Territory, and northern Western Australia — the dry season from June to September is the most favourable time to visit. During this period, you can expect lower humidity, minimal rainfall, and comfortable temperatures, making it easier to enjoy natural attractions like Kakadu National Park, the Kimberley, and the Great Barrier Reef.
The shoulder seasons (April–May and September–October) can offer a good balance between milder weather, lower rental rates, and fewer crowds across many parts of the country. However, in outback and remote regions, travellers should always check local conditions, as heavy rains or extreme heat can affect road accessibility and safety.
The optimal time to rent a campervan in New Zealand is during the warmer months, from September to April. This period offers pleasant weather conditions, making it ideal for outdoor activities and exploring the country's diverse landscapes.
Peak tourist season falls between December and February, coinciding with the New Zealand summer. During this time, popular destinations can be crowded, and rental prices may be higher.
For those seeking a balance between favourable weather and fewer crowds, the shoulder seasons of spring (September to November) and autumn (March to May) are excellent choices. These periods typically feature mild temperatures and less tourist traffic.
Winter (June to August) is the off-peak season, presenting opportunities for snow sports enthusiasts, particularly in the South Island. However, travellers should be prepared for colder temperatures and potential road closures due to snow and ice.
The best time to rent a campervan in the USA depends largely on where you plan to travel, as the country covers a wide range of climates.
Western and Southern USA (California, Arizona, Nevada, Texas, Florida): Campervans can be rented year-round. Spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November) offer the most comfortable driving conditions, while summer can bring extreme heat in the desert southwest.
Northern States (Pacific Northwest, Great Lakes, New England): The best time to visit is from May to September, when roads are open and the weather is mild. Fall foliage season (late September to October) is especially beautiful in the Northeast.
Mountain States (Colorado, Utah, Wyoming, Montana): The summer months (June–August) provide ideal conditions for hiking, national park visits, and scenic drives. Some mountain passes may close during winter due to snow.
Peak travel times coincide with school holidays (June–August) and major events like Burning Man or national park festivals, so it’s best to book early during these periods.
Options range from budget-friendly to luxury models, including 2-, 3-, 4-, and 6-berth campervans and motorhomes. In Australia, fully equipped 4WD campers are also available for hire.

Most appliances operate on a 12V battery or gas, but air conditioning, microwaves, and power outlets require a 240V connection. To conserve battery life while freedom camping, keep the fridge closed as much as possible and park in shaded areas.
