Motor camps are usually full for the Hop
Beach Hop 2027 runs from 17 to 21 March in Whangamatā on the Coromandel Peninsula, with warm up days in Waihi, Pauanui and Onemana, and entry is free. Certified self-contained campervans can book event parking at Whangamatā Area School for NZ$100 a van for up to three nights from Thursday 18 March, while the town's motor camps are typically fully booked. In our live Auckland search for 15 to 23 March 2027, campervans start from NZ$74 a night and motorhomes with a toilet and shower from NZ$229 a night. Whangamatā is about 147 km, a little over 2 hours, from Auckland Airport.
Which rental brands suit Beach Hop?
Fifteen brands returned campervans in our live Auckland search for 15 to 23 March 2027 (67 vehicles): Britz, Maui, Apollo, Mighty, Star RV, Jucy, Happy Campers, Lucky Rentals, Escape, Spaceships, Campervan Village, Eurocampers, Waka Campa, LyLo Road Trips and Trekker Adventures. Travellers Autobarn was in the operator list but returned no vans for these dates. For Beach Hop, the brand matters less than the van: if you want the Area School parking or a council freedom camping space, it must be certified self-contained.
- Budget sleepers (Lucky Rentals, Escape, Campervan Village, Happy Campers, Spaceships, Jucy): from NZ$74 to about NZ$136 a night. Most list no toilet, so plan on a holiday park. The Campervan Village Aventus 2 and Aventus Plus are listed as self-contained but are on request.
- Self-contained 2 to 4 berth (Eurocampers, Escape, Spaceships, Happy Campers, Lucky Rentals): from NZ$124 (Eurocampers Euro Vista) to about NZ$196 a night. Escape (NZ$126, on request) and Happy Horizon (NZ$192) list a toilet.
- Motorhomes with toilet and shower (Lucky Rentals, Jucy, Mighty, Star RV, Apollo, Britz, Maui): from NZ$229 (Lucky Rentals Rambler, sleeps 3) to about NZ$402 a night for 2 to 3 berth models. These suit the Area School parking best.
- Family motorhomes, 4 to 6 berth (Jucy, Waka Campa, Mighty, Apollo, Britz, Maui, Star RV): from NZ$229 (Jucy Condo, sleeps 4) to NZ$461 (Jucy Chill'd Big Kahuna, sleeps 6).
- 4WD rooftop tent (Trekker Adventures): from NZ$206 (Single Tent Hilux) to NZ$413 (2020+ Defender). Rooftop tents are not self-contained, so book a campground.
Check the toilet before you book a self-contained site. The Mighty Highball and Double Down list a portable toilet, and since 7 June 2026 a fixed toilet is needed for certification. The drive from Auckland is all sealed state highway. Britz, for example, limits its RVs to sealed roads and bars the far north of the peninsula beyond Colville, which does not affect a Whangamatā trip. How much does campervan hire cost for Beach Hop?
Prices are NZ$ per night from our live Auckland search on 19 October 2026, for a pickup on Monday 15 March 2027 and return on Tuesday 23 March 2027 (67 vehicles, NZ$74 to NZ$683 a night). Beach Hop week is busy on the Coromandel, so rates and availability can change quickly.
- Budget sleepers, 2 to 3 berth: NZ$74 (Campervan Village Freedom Camping Aventus 2, on request), NZ$83 (Lucky Rentals Rodeo), NZ$94 (Escape Standard, on request), NZ$102 (Happy Trail), NZ$129 (Spaceships Beta Original) and NZ$136 (Jucy Crib).
- Self-contained, 2 to 4 berth: NZ$124 (Eurocampers Euro Vista), NZ$126 (Escape, with toilet, on request), NZ$128 (Euro Sky), NZ$139 (Euro Escape, sleeps 4), NZ$142 (Spaceships Beta 2S), NZ$161 (Lucky Rentals Roadie) and NZ$192 (Happy Horizon, with toilet).
- Toilet and shower, 2 to 3 berth: NZ$229 (Lucky Rentals Rambler), NZ$273 (Jucy Chaser), NZ$328 (Mighty Deuce), NZ$359 (Star RV Polaris 2), NZ$361 (Apollo Euro Tourer), NZ$375 (Britz Venturer) and NZ$402 (Maui Ultima).
- 4 to 6 berth: NZ$229 (Jucy Condo), NZ$237 (Waka Campa Explorer Saver), NZ$367 (Mighty Double Up), NZ$374 (Mighty Big Six, sleeps 6), NZ$409 (Apollo Euro Deluxe, sleeps 6), NZ$427 (Britz Odyssey and Wanderer), NZ$451 (Maui River, sleeps 6) and NZ$461 (Jucy Chill'd Big Kahuna).
- 4WD rooftop tent: NZ$206 (Trekker Single Tent Hilux), NZ$263 (Double Tent Hilux) and NZ$413 (2020+ Defender).
What the nightly rate leaves out
- Insurance excess reduction, one-way fees, extras such as bedding and kitchen kits, and fuel. We did not price these.
- Camping: NZ$100 a van for up to three nights at the Whangamatā Area School parking (NZMCA event listing), or holiday park fees, which are not published for Beach Hop week.
- Festival costs: entry is free for the public, and the official programme costs NZ$5.
Where can you stay in a campervan during Beach Hop?
Beach Hop is a free street festival across Whangamatā, not a fenced site, so there is no festival campground included with entry. The official FAQ says motels, hotels, apartments and motor camps are typically all fully booked for Beach Hop, so lock in a site as soon as you have your van. You have four realistic options.
1. Self-contained parking at Whangamatā Area School
- What it is: event parking for certified self-contained campervans and motorhomes at Whangamatā Area School, entered from Achilles Avenue next to the swimming pool, about 1 km from Williamson Park and the surf club.
- Price and dates: the NZMCA event listing gives NZ$100 per van for up to 3 nights, arriving from 1:15pm on Thursday 18 March 2027 and leaving by 1:30pm on Sunday 21 March 2027.
- How to book: email the Beach Hop parking team at beachhopparking@gmail.com. Further details are sent when you book. Dogs must stay on a lead.
- Not published: we found no power, water, length limit or member-only rule in the listing, so ask when you book.
2. The marina self-contained area
The official contact page has a separate enquiry form for self-contained camping at the marina, but no price, dates or rules are published. Use the form on the Beach Hop contact page. Do not just park up at the marina: the Whangamatā Marina Reserve is a prohibited freedom camping area under the council bylaw.
3. Holiday parks and campgrounds
- Whangamatā Motor Camp, 104 Barbara Avenue: less than 100 m from the beach, over 70 powered sites, all sites powered, and its own dump station. No pets during Beach Hop. Rates are shown in its online booking system.
- Wentworth Valley Campground: a conservation campsite in Coromandel Forest Park run by a commercial operator, reached from SH25 about 7 km south of town. It has powered campervan sites, and bookings are required for Beach Hop, 17 to 21 March 2027. Long-drop toilets, coin hot showers and no rubbish bins.
- Further out: Waihi hosts the Wednesday warm up and Pauanui the Thursday Power Cruise, so a holiday park in or near those towns works well for the first nights.
4. Council freedom camping in Whangamatā
Thames-Coromandel District Council only allows freedom camping in certified self-contained vehicles, between 5pm and 9am, for a maximum of two nights in a row. In Whangamatā the designated places are tiny: 4 vans at Aickin Road (you must leave on a Saturday), 2 at Beach Road, 4 marked spaces at the Information Centre car park on Port Road (5pm to 8am) and 4 at Island View Reserve. Williamson Park, Esplanade Drive, Hunt Road, Te Titoki Reserve and the Marina Reserve are prohibited. With 14 spaces in town and thousands of visitors, do not plan your trip around them. Read the council freedom camping bylaw before you go.
Self-contained rules for rental vans
Since 7 June 2026, a vehicle needs a green warrant to count as certified self-contained, and it must have a fixed toilet. Blue stickers are no longer valid and portable toilets no longer qualify. Ask your rental brand to confirm in writing that your van holds a green warrant before you book the Area School parking or any freedom camping site. The council dump station is on Lindsay Road and is free.
How do you get from Auckland to Beach Hop in a campervan?
Whangamatā is on the east coast of the Coromandel Peninsula. From Auckland Airport, where most rental depots are, it is about 147 km and a little over 2 hours without traffic. From the Auckland CBD it is about 159 km.
Main route: SH1, SH2 and the Kopu-Hikuai Road
- Take the Southern Motorway (SH1) south, turn off onto SH2 towards the Coromandel, then SH25 to Kopu near Thames.
- At Kopu, take SH25A, the Kopu-Hikuai Road, over the range to Hikuai. It is a winding hill road of about 28 km, so take it slowly in a large motorhome.
- Turn south on SH25 (Tairua Road) for the last 20 km into Whangamatā.
Alternative route: via Paeroa and Waihi
Stay on SH2 through Paeroa and the Karangahake Gorge to Waihi, then turn north on SH25 to Whangamatā, about 161 km in total. It is handy if you start the week at the Waihi warm up party on Wednesday. In 2026, NZTA had a single-lane stop/go section in the Karangahake Gorge, so check NZTA road conditions before you leave.
Distances around the Hop Spots
- Waihi (Wednesday): about 30 km south of Whangamatā, around 25 minutes.
- Pauanui (Thursday Power Cruise): about 36 km north, around 30 minutes.
- Onemana (Friday Thunder Cruise): about 9 km north, around 10 minutes.
- Whangamatā (Saturday and Sunday): the Grand Parade starts at 10:15am on Saturday, with the Rock n Roll Club March at 9:30am.
Traffic and parking tips
- The council warned that SH25 and SH25A would be busier than usual during Beach Hop 2026, with classic cars on the roads. Allow extra time and follow the marshals.
- In 2026, Port Road was closed from Ocean Road to Hetherington Road from 7am to 5pm on the Saturday for the parade and car shows. Expect similar closures in 2027 and move your van before the morning.
- Leave a motorhome at your campground or the Area School parking and walk into town. Parking for large vehicles in the town centre is scarce on the Saturday.

Beach Hop campervan tips
- Book the van and the camping together: the official FAQ says motor camps are typically fully booked for Beach Hop, so email the Area School parking team or your holiday park the same day you book the van.
- Check the green warrant: since 7 June 2026, self-contained areas need a green warrant and a fixed toilet. Ask your rental brand to confirm it in writing.
- Respect the liquor ban: drinking in any public place is banned from 9am Wednesday to 9am Monday, and over 100 Police are on duty. Drink only in the restricted alcohol areas or at your campsite.
- No skids, no burnouts: the organisers photograph dangerous driving and pass it to Police, who can confiscate the vehicle. That applies to rental vans too.
- Buy the NZ$5 programme: entry is free, and the programme has the full schedule and an entry form for the major prize draw, which closes at 4pm Saturday.
- Plan for road closures: park the van early on Saturday, as Port Road closed for most of the day in 2026.
