Slips hit the Waioeka Gorge in 2026
Rhythm and Vines 2026 runs from 28 to 31 December at Waiohika Estate, just outside Gisborne, and it is the festival's final year there before it moves to a new, undisclosed location in 2027. Onsite camping is for tents only and vehicles must stay in the festival car parks, so campervan travellers base themselves at a Gisborne holiday park or a council freedom camping site and ride the festival bus. In our live Auckland search for 26 December 2026 to 3 January 2027, campervans start from NZ$98 a night and self-contained vans from NZ$182 a night. The drive from Auckland is about 475 km via State Highway 2 and the Waioeka Gorge, roughly 6 to 7 hours.
Which rental brands suit Rhythm and Vines?
Eleven brands returned campervans in our live Auckland search for 26 December 2026 to 3 January 2027, 43 vehicles in all: Lucky Rentals, Happy Campers, Trekker Adventures, LyLo Road Trips, Waka Campa, Jucy, Star RV, Mighty, Apollo, Britz and Maui. Spaceships and Escape Rentals were in the operator list but had no vans for these dates. Because the van will not be your festival bed, the choice comes down to where you plan to sleep in Gisborne: a holiday park suits any van, while council freedom camping sites need a certified self-contained vehicle.
- Lucky Rentals and Happy Campers: the cheapest vans in the search. Lucky Rodeo (sleeps 2) from NZ$98 a night and Happy Trail (sleeps 2) from NZ$130 suit a holiday park. For freedom camping, the self-contained Lucky Roadie (sleeps 3, manual) starts from NZ$182, Happy Scout from NZ$259 (on request), Happy Horizon with a toilet from NZ$311 and Happy Cruise (sleeps 4) from NZ$322.
- Trekker Adventures: 4WD Hilux and Defender rooftop tent campers from NZ$206 a night, and a self-contained Hilux Camper (sleeps 2) from NZ$356.
- LyLo Road Trips, Waka Campa and Jucy: self-contained vans from NZ$361 (LyLo, sleeps 2, on request) and NZ$374 (Waka Campa Outrider, sleeps 3). Jucy offers the Crib from NZ$309, the self-contained Condo (sleeps 4) from NZ$414 and the Chill'd Big Kahuna (sleeps 6) from NZ$642, all on request.
- Motorhomes with toilet and shower: Lucky Rambler from NZ$430 (on request), Mighty Deuce from NZ$470, Apollo Euro Tourer from NZ$488, Star RV Polaris 2 from NZ$506 (on request), Britz Venturer from NZ$509 and Maui Ultima from NZ$534, rising to NZ$692 for a 6 berth Maui River.
Road rules to know
Britz, Maui and Mighty publish the same list of roads no RV may use, and it names nothing on the Auckland to Gisborne route. Their vans must stay on sealed roads, and the group says it may restrict travel in bad road or weather conditions, or when a destination is far for the length of the hire. Jucy says its vehicles are designed to stay on sealed roads. If State Highway 2 is disrupted, ask your brand before taking a detour. Auckland is the only CRG pickup in the North Island, so it is the natural start. Compare Auckland campervan hire for your own dates.
How much does campervan hire cost for Rhythm and Vines?
Prices are NZ$ per night from our live Auckland search on 19 October 2026 for a pickup on 26 December 2026 and return on 3 January 2027 (43 vehicles, NZ$98 to NZ$692 a night). New Year is peak season, so rates move as vans sell out, and vans marked on request need the brand to confirm.
- Budget 2 berth: NZ$98 (Lucky Rodeo) and NZ$130 (Happy Trail). Neither is listed as self-contained.
- Self-contained, 2 to 4 berth: NZ$182 (Lucky Roadie, sleeps 3, manual), NZ$259 (Happy Scout, on request), NZ$311 (Happy Horizon, toilet), NZ$322 (Happy Cruise, sleeps 4), NZ$356 (Trekker Hilux Camper), NZ$361 (LyLo, on request), NZ$374 (Waka Campa Outrider) and NZ$414 (Jucy Condo, sleeps 4, on request).
- Rooftop tent 4WD: NZ$206 (Trekker Single Tent Hilux), NZ$263 (Double Tent Hilux) and NZ$413 (2020+ Defender).
- Motorhomes with toilet and shower, 2 to 3 berth: NZ$430 (Lucky Rambler, on request), NZ$470 (Mighty Deuce), NZ$488 (Apollo Euro Tourer), NZ$506 (Star RV Polaris 2, on request), NZ$509 (Britz Venturer), NZ$524 (Happy Summit) and NZ$534 (Maui Ultima).
- 4 to 6 berth motorhomes: NZ$596 (Apollo Euro Quest), NZ$599 (Mighty Double Up and Big Six), NZ$632 (Apollo Euro Deluxe and Euro Camper), NZ$635 (Maui Cascade), NZ$642 (Jucy Chill'd Big Kahuna, on request), NZ$669 (Britz Odyssey and Wanderer), NZ$675 (Star RV Polaris 4, on request) and NZ$692 (Maui Beach and River).
What the nightly rate leaves out
- Insurance excess options, kilometre charges, extras such as bedding and kitchen kits, and fuel for a trip of about 950 km return. We did not price these.
- Holiday park fees in Gisborne, which parks set themselves and which are not included.
- Festival costs, checked on the official Moshtix page on 19 October 2026: 3 Day Festival Pass NZ$449 plus NZ$18.08 fees (final release), single day passes NZ$179 for 29 or 30 December and NZ$220 for 31 December, bus passes from NZ$40.25, and Priority Parking NZ$60 plus fees per vehicle. A NZ$4.20 transaction fee applies to each order.
- Two people at today's prices: 2 x NZ$449 is NZ$898 for 3 Day Festival Passes before fees, plus bus passes or parking.
Where can you camp in a campervan at Rhythm and Vines?
Not inside the festival. Every onsite campground at Waiohika Estate (Treble, Lil Treble, Bass, Rhythm, Meadow and Premium Camp) is sold as a 4 Day Camping and Festival Pass for tents, from 28 to 31 December. The official FAQs say vehicles cannot be parked next to your campsite and are not permitted inside the campgrounds unless authorised by festival staff, and the 2026 festival map shows no campervan zone. Treble, Lil Treble and Bass passes were already sold out or off sale on 19 October 2026.
Holiday parks in and around Gisborne
- Waikanae Beach Holiday Park (TOP 10), Grey Street, Gisborne: grass sites with power and water, up to 6 people a site, on the same street as the i-SITE festival bus stop.
- Showgrounds Park Motor Camp, 20 Main Road, Makaraka: on the western edge of Gisborne. Separately, the Gisborne Show (gisborneshow.co.nz) is taking registrations of interest for its own Rhythm and Vines camping.
- Tatapouri By The Sea, 516 Whangara Road: north of the city along the coast.
All three have dump stations listed by Gisborne District Council. Book early, as New Year is the busiest week of the year in Gisborne, and check each park's own rules for festival guests.
Freedom camping rules in Gisborne District
- Self-contained only: you may only freedom camp at designated sites, in a certified self-contained vehicle that clearly displays the green warrant. Ask your rental brand for proof before you book.
- Designated sites: Midway Beach surf club car park, Kaiti Beach and Bright Street car park (parks within painted blue lines), Makorori car park (signposted), plus Motu rest area. The Tokomaru Bay sites only open from 1 May to Labour Weekend, so they are closed over New Year.
- Limits: 3 nights maximum, and no more than 3 nights within 1 km of a place you freedom camped in the last 4 weeks. A five night festival stay needs a holiday park for at least part of it.
- Prohibited: the Gisborne urban area and surrounds, Sponge Bay, Wainui and Okitu, Makorori Beach outside the signposted area, Tolaga Bay and other listed spots. Fines are up to NZ$800.
- Summer camping: council seasonal sites along the coast (such as Pouawa and Turihaua) open from Labour Weekend to 30 April with a permit applied for online before you arrive, and need one chemical toilet per 8 people.
Empty waste at a dump station, such as the public one at 49 Wainui Road. Read the full rules on the Gisborne District Council freedom camping page, and the festival's own options on the official tickets page.
How do you get from Auckland to Rhythm and Vines in a campervan?
Waiohika Estate is on Waimata Valley Road, about 11 km by road from the Gisborne i-SITE. Tairāwhiti Gisborne's official visitor site puts Gisborne at roughly 6 to 7 hours' drive from Auckland. By our routing it is about 475 km from Auckland Airport to the festival: around 340 km through the Bay of Plenty to Ōpōtiki, then about 130 km on State Highway 2 through the Waioeka Gorge. In a campervan, plan on a full day with stops, or split it with a night in Rotorua or the Bay of Plenty.
The Waioeka Gorge
State Highway 2 through the gorge (spelt Waioweka by NZTA) is a winding river road with few services, so fill up with fuel and food in Ōpōtiki. It has been hit hard in 2026: the Goldsmith slip after the January storms closed it for over three weeks, recovery works with stop/go traffic management were still under way in mid 2026, and a slip on 30 August 2026 blocked it in both directions before it reopened under stop/go. When the gorge is shut, NZTA's detours are State Highway 35 around the East Cape or State Highway 5 via Napier. Via Napier the trip is about 620 km. Check the NZTA Journey Planner the day before you leave.
Parking and festival buses
- Festival buses: ticketed buses run on 29 and 30 December from 1:30pm to 2:00am and on 31 December from 1:30pm to 6:00am. Pick-ups are Fitzherbert Street, the i-SITE, Okitu Store in Wainui, Kaiti School, Gisborne Girls High School and Lytton West Shops. Passes start from NZ$40.25.
- Onsite parking: available but subject to availability, in car parks off Waimata Valley Road and Back Ormond Road. Priority Parking costs NZ$60 plus fees per vehicle. The festival does not publish rules for campervans in its car parks, so ask before you plan to drive the van in.
- In town: follow Gisborne parking signs and time limits, and do not park on grass verges or across driveways.
- Driving home: the festival asks anyone who has been drinking not to drive, and warns you can still be affected the next morning. Park the van and take the bus.
InterCity also runs special Rhythm and Vines services from Auckland if part of your group would rather not drive. Compare vans for the trip: Auckland campervan hire.

Rhythm and Vines campervan tips
- Book the holiday park first: the van cannot sleep in the festival, so lock in a Gisborne site for the festival nights before you pay for the van.
- Buy the right pass: with the van in town you need a 3 Day Festival Pass or single day passes. The 28 December Warmup is only for onsite campers with a 4 Day Camping and Festival Pass.
- Check the green warrant: Gisborne's freedom camping sites take only certified self-contained vehicles showing a green warrant, for 3 nights at most.
- Watch State Highway 2: slips closed the Waioeka Gorge for over three weeks in early 2026 and again briefly in August. Check the NZTA Journey Planner, and allow for a long detour via Napier.
- Bus, do not drive: festival buses run until 2:00am, and until 6:00am on New Year's Eve, from six Gisborne stops.
- Bring physical ID: the event is R18 and only a passport, NZ driver licence or Kiwi Access Card is accepted. Photos of ID may be refused.
