Quick Event Tips for Denver Travellers
- Book Summer Early: June to September is peak season for vans, RV parks and national park campsites. Colorado state park sites open for booking six months ahead.
- Red Rocks by RV: RVs count as oversized vehicles at Red Rocks concerts. They must park in Lower South Lot 2 and can't stay overnight, so book an RV park nearby.
- Festival Camping: At Telluride Bluegrass, vehicle and RV camping is at Lawson Hill with festival passes sold separately. 2027 tickets go on sale on 10 December.
Holiday parks and attractions around Denver
Where to park the van near Denver and inside Colorado's national parks, plus the drives and sights worth building a few days around.
Holiday parks where you can stay with your campervan

Denver East / Strasburg KOA Holiday
About 35 miles (56 km) east of downtown Denver off I-70 at exit 310, this KOA Holiday on the plains is open all year. RV sites take rigs up to 75 ft with up to 50-amp power, and summer brings a heated pool, hayrides and weekend movie nights. Covered wagons and cabins sit among the sites, and pizza can be delivered to your site.

Moraine Park Campground, Rocky Mountain
About 70 miles (112 km) from Denver, Moraine Park is the only campground in Rocky Mountain National Park open all year. Summer sites are booked on recreation.gov and include a Timed Entry+ Bear Lake Road permit, while winter sites are first come, first served. Summer sites cost US$35, or US$55 with power, and there is a dump station but no water or sewer hookups.

Garden of the Gods RV Resort
On West Colorado Avenue in Colorado Springs, about 71 miles (114 km) south of Denver, this resort is a short drive from Garden of the Gods Park, and most of its RV sites look towards Pikes Peak. Every RV site has full hook-ups with 30 or 50-amp power, from back-ins to executive pull-throughs, and guests share two pools, a laundry, a games room and an off-leash dog park.

Piñon Flats Campground, Great Sand Dunes
About 240 miles (385 km) southwest of Denver, Piñon Flats sits among piñon pines below the tallest dunes in North America and the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. Its 88 sites open from 1 April to 31 October and must be booked on recreation.gov. Many sites are small and unlevel and the historic layout can't fit every large RV, so check each site's size first. Park entry is US$25 per vehicle.
Top attractions to build your trip around

Rocky Mountain National Park and Trail Ridge Road
About 65 miles (105 km) northwest of Denver, Trail Ridge Road crosses the park for 48 miles from Estes Park to Grand Lake and climbs to 12,183 ft (3,713 m), the highest continuous paved road in the US. In 2026 a timed entry reservation was needed from 9am to 2pm between 22 May and 12 October. Entry is US$30 per vehicle a day, plus US$100 per person for non-US residents aged 16 and over.

Garden of the Gods and Pikes Peak
About 70 miles (112 km) south of Denver in Colorado Springs, Garden of the Gods is a free city park and National Natural Landmark, with red sandstone formations below Pikes Peak. The park is open from 5am to 10pm. The 19-mile (31 km) Pikes Peak Highway climbs to the 14,115 ft summit, but RVs over 24 ft and all trailers are banned, so larger motorhomes can't drive it.

Mesa Verde National Park
About 370 miles (595 km) southwest of Denver near Cortez, Mesa Verde is a World Heritage Site protecting Ancestral Pueblo cliff dwellings. To enter Cliff Palace, the largest known cliff dwelling in North America, book a ranger-led tour on recreation.gov 14 days ahead. Entry is US$30 per vehicle from May to late October, and Morefield Campground has 15 full-hookup RV sites.

Red Rocks Park and Amphitheatre
About 17 miles (27 km) west of downtown Denver near Morrison, Red Rocks is a Denver Mountain Park with free entry and parking. Walk the 1.4-mile Trading Post Trail through the sandstone formations, see the Visitor Center and Hall of Fame, or catch a show in the open-air amphitheatre. On concert days the amphitheatre closes to visitors from about 2pm.

I recently booked a campervan through this company. It was my first time booking an RV and I had a lot of questions & fears going into booking a vehicle that was worth so much & really needed to understand how the process works. I called the company & was given detailed information on what to expect & was guided through the process. They even mentioned I could call back with any further questions to ensure I was happy & comfortable with my decision. I rented the vehicle for 14 days and drove from Brisbane to Jindabyne to go Skiing. I would definitely book through this company again.

Denver Campervan Hire Itineraries
Read our guide to the best apps for a USA campervan trip →Colorado Rockies & Southwest Loop (21 Days)
Days 1-2: Denver to Estes Park
Day 1: Collect your RV from Cruise America's Denver depot in Frederick, about 34 miles (55 km) north of Denver International Airport, where pick-ups usually run from 1pm to 4pm. Stock up on groceries nearby, then drive about an hour to Estes Park, the gateway to Rocky Mountain National Park. Book two nights near town, and drink plenty of water as you adjust to the altitude.
Day 2: Explore the Bear Lake Road corridor with a Timed Entry+ Bear Lake Road reservation from Recreation.gov, needed from late May to mid-October. Leave the RV at the Park & Ride and take the park shuttle to Bear Lake, then walk the lakeside loops to Nymph and Dream lakes. Look for elk grazing in Moraine Park on the drive back to town.
Days 3-4: Trail Ridge Road to Grand Lake
Day 3: Drive Trail Ridge Road, the highest continuous paved road in the United States, which climbs to 12,183 feet (3,713 m) on its 48 miles (77 km) across the park. Enter before 9am or book a Timed Entry reservation, and stop at the Alpine Visitor Center and the tundra viewpoints. Descend through the Kawuneeche Valley to Grand Lake and book two nights.
Day 4: Look for moose in the Kawuneeche Valley early in the morning, then walk to Adams Falls on the East Inlet Trail before the 9am timed-entry window starts. Spend the afternoon on Grand Lake, paddling or strolling the boardwalks of the old wooden town. Refuel in Granby before tomorrow's drive west.
Days 5-6: Steamboat Springs
Day 5: Head south to Granby and west on US 40 over Rabbit Ears Pass to Steamboat Springs, about 95 miles (153 km) and just over two hours. Use low gears on the long descent into the Yampa Valley. Book two nights at a campground near town, then walk the Yampa River Core Trail into the old town centre.
Day 6: Drive the short road from town to Fish Creek Falls and walk down to the lower viewpoint, arriving early as RV parking is limited. In the afternoon, soak in the pools at Old Town Hot Springs in the centre of Steamboat, or float the Yampa River on a warm summer day. Refill water and empty the tanks before moving on.
Days 7-8: Glenwood Springs
Day 7: Follow CO 131 south through ranch country to I-70, then west through Glenwood Canyon, where the interstate hugs the Colorado River, to Glenwood Springs. The drive is about 114 miles (184 km) and two and a half hours. Book two nights near town and check CDOT's COtrip site for any canyon closures before you set off.
Day 8: Soak in the large hot springs pool at Glenwood Hot Springs, then ride the gondola up to Glenwood Caverns Adventure Park for cave tours and views over the valley. Hire a bike and ride the paved path through Glenwood Canyon, or browse the shops in town. Stock up on groceries for the mountain leg ahead.
Days 9-10: Aspen & Maroon Bells
Day 9: Drive about an hour up the Roaring Fork Valley on CO 82 to Aspen, 42 miles (68 km) away. Book two nights at a White River National Forest campground near town well ahead, as camping close to Aspen is limited. Wander the historic centre and its galleries, and ride the gondola up Aspen Mountain in summer.
Day 10: Visiting Maroon Bells needs a reservation from visitmaroonbells.com, whether you ride the shuttle or drive, so leave the RV in town and take the shuttle. Walk the easy trail around Maroon Lake beneath the twin peaks. Head back west tomorrow, as Independence Pass east of Aspen is narrow and closed to vehicles over 35 feet.
Days 11-12: Black Canyon of the Gunnison
Day 11: Drive down the valley to Carbondale and over McClure Pass on CO 133 to Montrose, about 139 miles (223 km) and three and a half hours. Book two nights in Montrose, as only 25 non-electric sites at the park's South Rim Campground have reopened after the 2025 South Rim Fire. Stock up on supplies in town.
Day 12: Drive 17 miles (28 km) to the South Rim and follow the rim road past overlooks such as Gunnison Point, Chasm View and the Painted Wall, where the cliffs plunge to the river far below. Skip the steep East Portal Road, closed to vehicles over 22 feet, which rules out the Standard and Large RVs. Carry your own water.
Days 13-14: Ouray & Telluride
Day 13: Drive about 45 minutes south on US 550 to Ouray, a Victorian mining town ringed by peaks, 36 miles (58 km) away. Soak in the Ouray Hot Springs Pool and walk to Box Canyon Falls. Stay nearby, and leave the Million Dollar Highway south of town, steep and narrow with few guardrails, to confident drivers.
Day 14: Backtrack to Ridgway and take CO 62 over the Dallas Divide to Telluride, about 50 miles (80 km), with big views of the San Juan Mountains. Ride the free gondola from town to Mountain Village and look up at Bridal Veil Falls at the end of the box canyon. Book a campground in the area ahead, as sites are limited.
Days 15-16: Mesa Verde National Park
Day 15: Take CO 145 over Lizard Head Pass and down the Dolores River valley to Mesa Verde National Park, about 85 miles (137 km) and around two and a half hours. Book two nights at Morefield Campground inside the park, and reserve ranger-guided cliff dwelling tours on Recreation.gov well ahead. Pick up maps at the visitor centre near the entrance.
Day 16: Drive the winding road to Chapin Mesa to see Cliff Palace and Spruce Tree House from the overlooks, and walk the Mesa Top Loop. Wetherill Mesa Road is closed to vehicles over 25 feet or 8,000 lbs (3,629 kg), which rules out most hire motorhomes. Leave exposed overlooks when afternoon storms bring lightning.
Days 17-18: Durango to Great Sand Dunes
Day 17: Drive about 36 miles (57 km) east to Durango, a lively railroad town on the Animas River. Ride the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad, a full-day return trip into the San Juan Mountains, or stroll Main Avenue and the riverside trail. Camp near town and refuel for tomorrow's longer drive.
Day 18: Head east on US 160 through Pagosa Springs and over Wolf Creek Pass, using low gears on the long descent. Cross the San Luis Valley to Great Sand Dunes National Park, about 169 miles (272 km) and four hours in all. Book Piñon Flats Campground, open from April to October, on Recreation.gov.
Days 19-21: Great Sand Dunes, Colorado Springs & Denver
Day 19: Climb the tallest dunes in North America early, before the sand heats up, and in late spring paddle in Medano Creek at the foot of the dunes. After lunch, drive about 173 miles (279 km), roughly three and a half hours, to Colorado Springs, and camp at Cheyenne Mountain State Park with a state park vehicle pass.
Day 20: Walk among the red rock towers of Garden of the Gods, then ride the Broadmoor Manitou and Pikes Peak Cog Railway to the 14,115 foot (4,302 m) summit, a 3.5 hour return trip. Late in the afternoon, drive about two hours north to St. Vrain State Park in Firestone, a few minutes from the depot, for your last night.
Day 21: Empty the tanks, refuel and drive about 4 miles (7 km) to Cruise America in Frederick, returning between 9am and 11am to avoid a late fee. The depot is closed on Sundays, so plan your return for another day. Allow about 40 minutes by taxi or rideshare to Denver International Airport.
Denver to Salt Lake City via Moab & Arches (14 Days)
Day 1: Denver to Estes Park
Day 1: Collect your RV from Cruise America in Frederick, north of Denver, after checking one-way availability to Salt Lake City for your dates, as one-ways need an advance reservation. Pick-ups usually run from 1pm to 4pm, so stock up on groceries and drive about an hour, 42 miles (67 km), to Estes Park. Book two nights near the park entrances.
Days 2-3: Rocky Mountain National Park
Day 2: Use a Timed Entry+ Bear Lake Road reservation from Recreation.gov to explore the Bear Lake corridor, taking the park shuttle from the Park & Ride to Bear Lake at 9,475 feet (2,888 m). Walk the short lakeside loops, and look for elk in Moraine Park in the evening. Drink plenty of water and take the climbs slowly.
Day 3: Cross Trail Ridge Road, the highest continuous paved road in the United States at 12,183 feet (3,713 m), stopping at the Alpine Visitor Center and the tundra walks near the top. Enter before 9am or book a Timed Entry reservation. Descend to Grand Lake on the west side for the night, watching for moose in the Kawuneeche Valley.
Day 4: Grand Lake to Glenwood Springs
Day 4: Head south via Granby and Kremmling to Silverthorne, then west on I-70 over Vail Pass and through Glenwood Canyon, about 159 miles (256 km) and three and a half hours on paved roads. Arrive in Glenwood Springs in time for a soak in the big hot springs pool, and book two nights nearby. Check COtrip for I-70 closures first.
Days 5-6: Glenwood Springs & Grand Junction
Day 5: Ride the gondola up to Glenwood Caverns Adventure Park for cave tours and canyon views, or hire a bike and ride the paved path through Glenwood Canyon. Return to the hot springs pool in the evening, then refill water and empty the tanks ready for the drive west.
Day 6: Drive about 87 miles (140 km) west on I-70, stopping at the orchards and wineries of Palisade, then climb Rim Rock Drive through Colorado National Monument, with its sheer red canyons and three tunnels. Book a night near Fruita or Grand Junction, close to the Utah border.
Day 7: Grand Junction to Moab
Day 7: Cross into Utah on I-70 and turn onto Utah 128, the Upper Colorado River Scenic Byway, which follows the river through red rock canyons to Moab, about 106 miles (171 km) and two and a half hours. Book four nights near Moab, or at Devils Garden Campground in Arches if you reserved months ahead.
Days 8-9: Arches National Park
Day 8: Arches did not need timed-entry reservations in 2026, but check nps.gov before you go, as cars can be turned away when the park is congested. Arrive early for the Windows and Double Arch, then drive the scenic road to Devils Garden for the walk to Landscape Arch. Carry plenty of water in summer.
Day 9: Walk to Delicate Arch, about 3 miles (4.8 km) return, at sunrise or in the late afternoon to avoid the heat, as Moab averages 37°C in July. Spend the middle of the day in town, on a jet boat or rafting trip on the Colorado River, or resting in the shade at camp.
Day 10: Canyonlands & Dead Horse Point
Day 10: Drive about 33 miles (52 km) to the Island in the Sky district of Canyonlands National Park, stopping at Mesa Arch and Grand View Point for huge views over the canyons. On the way back, visit Dead Horse Point State Park, a Utah state park with its own entry fee, for its famous overlook of a bend in the Colorado River.
Day 11: Moab to Capitol Reef
Day 11: Head north and west via Green River to Goblin Valley State Park, about 101 miles (162 km), to wander among its hoodoos. Continue about 80 miles through Hanksville to Torrey, on the edge of Capitol Reef National Park. Fruita Campground is reservation only and full months ahead, so book early or stay at an RV park in Torrey.
Days 12-13: Capitol Reef & North to Salt Lake City
Day 12: Drive the paved Scenic Drive south from Fruita past cliffs, canyons and historic orchards, where you may pick fruit in season. Walk to Hickman Bridge, a natural arch about 2 miles (3 km) return, and buy a fruit pie at the Gifford Homestead. Refill water and empty the tanks before the long drive north.
Day 13: Drive about 4 hours north to the Salt Lake City area, roughly 207 miles (333 km), via Richfield and I-15. Spend the afternoon at Temple Square or the Great Salt Lake shore, and book a night at an RV park in the city. Empty the tanks and refuel this evening, ready for a morning return.
Day 14: Return in Salt Lake City
Day 14: Drive to Cruise America's Salt Lake City depot at 4125 South State Street in Millcreek and return the RV between 9am and 11am. The depot is closed on Sundays, so plan your return for another day. From there, it is about 12 miles (19 km) by taxi or rideshare to Salt Lake City International Airport.
Rocky Mountain National Park & Colorado Springs (7 Days)
Days 1-2: Estes Park & Bear Lake
Day 1: Collect your RV from Cruise America in Frederick, where pick-ups usually run from 1pm to 4pm, and drive about an hour, 42 miles (67 km), to Estes Park. Stock up on groceries in town and book two nights at a campground near the park's eastern entrances. Take it easy on your first evening as you adjust to the altitude.
Day 2: Use a Timed Entry+ Bear Lake Road reservation to explore the Bear Lake corridor, taking the park shuttle from the Park & Ride to Bear Lake. Walk past Nymph and Dream lakes to Emerald Lake, about 3.5 miles (5.6 km) return, then look for elk in Moraine Park. Back in town, stroll the riverside paths of Estes Park.
Days 3-5: Trail Ridge Road, Georgetown & Red Rocks
Day 3: Drive Trail Ridge Road, the highest continuous paved road in the United States, climbing to 12,183 feet (3,713 m) above the tree line. Enter before 9am or book a Timed Entry reservation, and stop at the Alpine Visitor Center and the tundra viewpoints. Descend to Grand Lake on the west side of the park for the night.
Day 4: Head south through Granby and Winter Park and over Berthoud Pass to I-70 and Georgetown, about 71 miles (114 km), using low gears on the descents. Ride the Georgetown Loop Railroad through the old silver mining valley, or relax in the hot springs at Idaho Springs. Book a night at a campground near Idaho Springs or Golden.
Day 5: Drive about 35 miles (56 km) to Red Rocks Park and walk around the famous amphitheatre and its trails. Continue south about 77 miles on I-25 to Colorado Springs, about an hour and a half, and book a night at Cheyenne Mountain State Park, with views over the city.
Days 6-7: Colorado Springs & Back to Denver
Day 6: Walk among the red rock spires of Garden of the Gods, then ride the Broadmoor Manitou and Pikes Peak Cog Railway to the 14,115 foot (4,302 m) summit of Pikes Peak, a 3.5 hour return trip. Late in the afternoon, drive about two hours north to St. Vrain State Park in Firestone, a few minutes from the depot.
Day 7: Empty the tanks and refuel, then return the RV to Cruise America in Frederick between 9am and 11am. The depot is closed on Sundays, so avoid a Sunday return. With time before your flight, visit Union Station in downtown Denver, or head to the airport, about 34 miles (55 km) and 40 minutes away.

Non-US residents aged 16 and over pay an extra US$100 each at 11 busy national parks, including Rocky Mountain, on top of the vehicle fee. The US$250 non-resident America the Beautiful pass covers your whole vehicle for a year, so it usually pays off on a Colorado trip.
⛰️ Mountain Passes & Braking
Colorado's passes top 10,000 feet (3,050 m), with long, steep descents. Shift to a lower gear instead of riding the brakes. From 1 September to 31 May, CDOT can enforce its Traction Law on I-70 between Morrison and Dotsero, so check COtrip before you go.
⛈️ Storms & Fire Bans
Summer afternoons often bring thunderstorms and lightning to the mountains, so do high walks and Trail Ridge Road in the morning. Dry spells can bring fire restrictions that ban campfires, so check with your campground and cook on the RV stove instead.
First Time Hiring a Campervan in Denver?
🚦 Driving on the Right
Keep right, with the driver on the left. You can turn right on red after a full stop unless a sign says otherwise, and at four-way stops the first to stop goes first. Stop for school buses showing flashing red lights, even when coming the other way on an undivided road.
📏 Check Length Limits
Old Fall River Road and Mesa Verde's Wetherill Mesa Road are closed to vehicles over 25 feet, and the Black Canyon's East Portal Road to those over 22 feet. Hire motorhomes here run from about 20.5 feet to 32 feet (9.8 m), so pick the smallest RV that fits.
🏕️ Plan Your Overnight Stops
Book campgrounds ahead in summer, as long-term street parking in Denver is restricted and many shops ban overnight RVs, though some Walmart stores allow them, so ask first. Much free camping on Bureau of Land Management land is down dirt roads, which the rental brands' terms do not allow.
☀️ Desert Heat in Utah
Moab averages 37°C in July, and Cruise America asks renters to take extreme care in desert areas in July and August. Walk early or late, carry plenty of water, keep the fuel topped up, and book powered sites to run the air conditioning.
Denver Campervan Seasonal Travel Guide
Denver sits a mile above sea level and has big swings in temperature, so the season you choose shapes your RV trip. Summer opens Trail Ridge Road and the high passes, while winter brings snow to the mountains and winterised RVs. On NOAA's 1991 to 2020 normals for Denver International Airport, July averages a high of 32°C and May is the wettest month.
Denver Hire Quick Tips
- Book Early: Rocky Mountain National Park campsites open up to six months ahead and timed entry slots on the first of the month before, so book both early.
- Check Depot Hours: Denver's depots in Commerce City and Frederick are closed on Sundays, and returns are in the morning, so plan your last night nearby.
- Pack for Big Swings: Bring warm layers and rain gear even in July, as nights at altitude can be cold and afternoon storms roll in fast.
Denver Campervan Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Answers to common questions about hiring an RV in Denver, from the depots north of the city and Rocky Mountain National Park's timed entry to altitude, one-way trips to Salt Lake City, mileage, licences and campgrounds.
How much does it cost to hire a campervan in Denver?
In our live searches for 14 day hires from Denver, Cruise America motorhomes cost about US$52 to US$85 a night in October 2027 and US$173 to US$209 in July. Mileage and kits are extra with Cruise America, El Monte RV and Road Bear RV, so compare live prices from all brands for your dates.
Where do I pick up a campervan in Denver?
Cruise America is at 4180 Busch Place in Frederick, about 34 miles (55 km) north of Denver International Airport, with pick-ups from 1pm to 4pm and returns from 9am to 11am. El Monte RV and Road Bear RV share a depot at 6586 Brighton Blvd in Commerce City, about 22 miles (35 km) from the airport, with weekday pick-ups from 1pm. Both depots are closed on Sundays. Road Bear RV has a free shuttle from listed airport hotels; otherwise take a taxi or rideshare.
When is the best time to hire an RV in Denver?
June to September suits most trips, when Trail Ridge Road is usually open and the high country is clear of snow. July is Denver's hottest month, with average highs of about 32°C, and afternoon thunderstorms are common in the mountains. Late September brings golden aspens and quieter roads. From mid or late October to about the end of March, RVs are winterised, so the sink, shower and toilet are off unless you can pay to de-winterise.
How many days do I need for an RV trip from Denver?
Seven days covers Rocky Mountain National Park, Trail Ridge Road and Colorado Springs at an easy pace. Allow about 14 days for a one-way trip to Salt Lake City via Moab, Arches and Capitol Reef, and three weeks for a loop through Steamboat Springs, Aspen, the Black Canyon of the Gunnison, Mesa Verde and Great Sand Dunes. Keep most driving days to three or four hours, as mountain roads are slow in a motorhome.
Do I need a timed entry reservation for Rocky Mountain National Park?
Yes, in the busy season. In 2026, a Timed Entry reservation was needed to enter between 9am and 2pm from 22 May to 12 October, and a Timed Entry+ Bear Lake Road reservation for the Bear Lake corridor from 5am to 6pm until 18 October. Book on Recreation.gov for a US$2 fee, with slots released on the first of the month before. Park campground bookings include timed entry, and you also need an entrance pass.
Can I drive Trail Ridge Road in a hire RV?
Yes. Trail Ridge Road is paved and climbs to 12,183 feet (3,713 m) on its 48 miles (77 km) between Estes Park and Grand Lake, and it is usually open from late May to mid-October, depending on snow. Use low gears on the descents and expect cold, windy weather at the top. Skip Old Fall River Road: it is unpaved, closed to vehicles over 25 feet, and the rental brands' terms do not allow unpaved back roads.
Will the altitude affect me on an RV trip from Denver?
It might. Denver sits at 5,280 feet (1,609 m), and altitude sickness can start above about 8,000 feet (2,440 m), with headaches, dizziness, nausea and shortness of breath. Spend a night or two around Denver before heading higher, drink plenty of water, and go easy on exercise and alcohol at first. If symptoms get worse, head down to a lower elevation and seek medical advice.
Can I hire an RV in Denver and drop it off in Salt Lake City?
Yes, Cruise America and El Monte RV both have depots in Denver and Salt Lake City, so check one-way availability for your dates. One-ways need an advance reservation, drop fees vary with route and dates (El Monte RV quotes about US$200 to US$750), and Cruise America's US$300 down payment is not refundable once confirmed. The direct drive is about 490 miles (790 km), but allow 10 to 14 days to see Rocky Mountain National Park, Moab and Arches on the way.
Are miles included in RV hire from Denver?
No, mileage is charged separately. Cruise America charges 39 US cents a mile, estimating 100 miles a night for return trips and refunding unused miles. El Monte RV sells 100-mile packs from US$37 and Road Bear RV from US$45, with unlimited-mile options for a fee. A three-week Colorado loop covers roughly 1,400 to 1,600 miles (2,250 to 2,600 km), so budget about US$550 to US$625 with Cruise America, plus fuel.
Are bedding and kitchen gear included in the RV?
No, they are sold as kits that you reserve in advance. Linen kits cost US$75 per person with all three brands, and kitchen kits are US$125 with Cruise America, US$140 with El Monte RV and US$150 with Road Bear RV. You can bring your own or shop in Denver instead. Cruise America and Road Bear RV charge US$3.50 an hour for the generator, so powered campsites can save money.
Can I drive an RV in Colorado on my Australian licence?
Yes. Cruise America, El Monte RV and Road Bear RV accept a valid driver's licence from your home country, and no special licence is needed for their motorhomes. Bring the physical card, as temporary and digital licences are not accepted. Smartraveller advises getting an International Driving Permit before you leave Australia, as some states and rental companies require one, and driving without a required permit can void your insurance.
What is the minimum age to hire an RV in Denver?
Drivers must be at least 21 with all three brands and hold a valid driver's licence, and the main renter needs a major credit card in their own name. Every driver must be at the depot at pick-up and be listed on the rental agreement. Visa, Mastercard, American Express and Discover are accepted, but not prepaid or gift cards for the security deposit.
What insurance options are available for RV hire in Denver?
Cruise America takes a refundable security deposit of at least US$500 plus a US$300 reservation down payment, while El Monte RV and Road Bear RV hold a US$1,500 security deposit and sell VIP cover from US$16 a night that cuts your damage liability to US$1,500. Unpaved roads are off limits and can void your cover, so read the terms, and check that your travel insurance covers you in the USA.
Where can I camp with an RV near Denver and in the national parks?
St. Vrain State Park in Firestone, minutes from the Frederick depot, has 87 campsites, and Cherry Creek and Chatfield state parks have RV sites on the south side of the city; Colorado state parks also need a daily vehicle pass. Inside Rocky Mountain National Park, summer camping at Moraine Park, Glacier Basin, Aspenglen and Timber Creek is by reservation on Recreation.gov, up to six months ahead, and sites sell out early.
Where can I get propane and empty the tanks around Denver?
Campgrounds with full hook-ups usually have a dump station, and Moraine Park Campground in Rocky Mountain National Park has an RV dump station and water fill near the ranger station. Depot staff can point you to the nearest propane and dump points when you collect the RV. Return it with empty holding tanks, or you may be charged (up to US$100 with Cruise America), and call ahead for propane, as not every station fills RVs.
Can I take my dog in a hire RV from Denver?
Yes with Cruise America or El Monte RV, but Road Bear RV does not allow pets. Clean up after your pet and return the RV in the same condition, or pay a cleaning fee (up to US$250 with Cruise America). In Rocky Mountain National Park, pets are not allowed on trails and must stay on a leash in campgrounds, picnic areas and along roads. Never leave a pet alone in the RV on a hot day, and check each campground's pet rules before you book.
