Carnaval de Québec 2027, the Quebec Winter Carnival, runs from 5 to 14 February 2027 around Old Québec and the Plains of Abraham, about 278 km (173 miles) from the Cruise Canada depot at Saint-Eustache near Montreal. In our live search for 3 to 10 February 2027, all four Cruise Canada motorhomes from Montreal showed at C$63 a night before kilometre charges, but they come winterised, with no running water, shower or toilet. There is no RV camping at the carnival, so the realistic overnight spot is the year-round Bassin Louise RV lot in the Old Port (no services, C$70 per 24 hours in 2025), with powered winter sites at Parc régional de la rivière Gentilly about 131 km away. Average February lows are around minus 15°C, so read our honest winter advice before you book.
Which rental brands suit Carnaval de Québec?
One brand returned vans in our live search for a Montreal pick-up in February: Cruise Canada (the Canadian arm of Cruise America), from its depot at 705 Rue Dubois, Saint-Eustache. It showed all four of its motorhomes for 3 to 10 February 2027: the Ultra Compact 18 ft (sleeps 2), Compact 21 ft (sleeps 4), Standard 25 ft (sleeps 5) and Large 30 ft (sleeps 7). So yes, you can rent a motorhome in Quebec in February, but read the winter rules first.
- Winterised, so no water: Cruise America's FAQ says that in places with harsh winters its motorhomes are winterised from about mid October to late March, with the water and holding tanks drained. That means no sink, shower or toilet. De-winterising may cost up to 60 dollars (currency not stated), you must then run the heater at all times, and any freeze damage is charged to you in full.
- Heat and power: in Canada only the Large 30 ft has a generator. Cruise America says the Ultra Compact's furnace and air conditioning run on 120 V external power, so it needs a powered site to keep warm. At an unpowered lot, the Large 30 ft is the only model that can make its own power.
- Winter opening hours: from 11 October to 2 May the Montreal centre is open Monday to Friday 9 AM to 4 PM and Saturday 9 AM to 2 PM, and closed on Sundays. Pick-up is normally 1 PM to 4 PM and drop-off 9 AM to 11 AM.
- Tyres: Cruise America does not say whether its Canadian motorhomes run winter tyres. Ask the Montreal centre before you pay the down payment.
CanaDream rents a purpose-built Winter Ready Maxi Motorhome with insulated, heated tanks, a generator and full use of water down to minus 30°C. It is the better winter vehicle on paper, but CanaDream returned no vans in our search, and its site does not say whether the winter model is offered from Montreal. CanaDream also bans parking its RVs anywhere in greater Montreal.

What does a Carnaval de Québec RV rental cost?
Live prices from the Campervan Rental Guide search for a Montreal pick-up on Wednesday 3 February 2027 and return on Wednesday 10 February 2027 (7 nights), searched on 19 October 2026. Prices are Canadian dollars per night, with the total for 7 nights. All four models priced the same.
- Ultra Compact 18 ft (sleeps 2): C$63.11 a night, C$510.71 total
- Compact 21 ft (sleeps 4): C$63.11 a night, C$510.71 total
- Standard 25 ft (sleeps 5): C$63.11 a night, C$510.71 total
- Large 30 ft (sleeps 7): C$63.11 a night, C$510.71 total
That is far cheaper than summer. Our July 2027 Montreal search showed C$294 to C$354 a night. The low winter rate reflects a winterised vehicle with no water system.
What is not in those prices
- Kilometres: Cruise America's FAQ says Canadian rentals are charged for an estimated 160 km per night (1,120 km over 7 nights) at 39 cents per kilometre, collected up front, with unused kilometres refunded. The currency is not stated. The round trip to Québec City is about 556 km, or about 605 km with the Gentilly stops in our trip plan. A Half Price Mileage Deal (promo code FRDM) is listed for departures through 31 October 2027.
- De-winterising: up to 60 dollars if you want working water, with the freeze risk on you.
- Overnight parking: Bassin Louise was C$70 per 24 hours on Québec City's tourism site (updated June 2025), so five nights would be about C$350. Gentilly's winter site rates are not published online, so call the park.
- Kits and generator: a Personal Kit is listed at 75 dollars per person and a Vehicle Provisioning Kit at 125 dollars per vehicle. The Large 30 ft generator is listed at 3.50 dollars an hour. Currencies are not stated.
- Carnival pass: the Effigy, the carnival's official pass, cost C$39 plus tax in 2026 and is not needed for children 12 and under. The 2027 price was not published when we checked.
- Insurance, cancellations and extras: check Cruise Canada's terms before you pay the down payment.
RV camping and winter parking for Carnaval de Québec
There is no RV or campervan camping at Carnaval de Québec. The carnival is spread across Upper Town sites such as Place de l'Assemblée, Parc de la Francophonie and Place d'Youville, plus the Ice Palace zone near Old Québec and a family site at Espace Quatre Cents in the Old Port (2026 layout). The official accommodation page lists hotels only and gives no RV information. Most campgrounds around Québec City close for winter, so plan your nights before you rent.
Bassin Louise RV lot (Old Port)
- Where: 320 rue Abraham-Martin, in the Old Port, about 1 km from the Parliament Building and close to Espace Quatre Cents.
- When: open year-round, 24 hours a day, with no maximum number of nights and no reservations.
- Cost: C$70 for 24 hours, paid at the pay station or with the Flowbird app, according to Québec City's official tourism site (page updated 1 June 2025, so check the current rate).
- Services: none. No power, water or dump, so a winterised motorhome here has no toilet and only the Large 30 ft can run a generator for heat.
Powered winter sites: Parc régional de la rivière Gentilly
The regional park at 1000 route des Flamants, Bécancour, says it is open 12 months a year, campground included, with more than forty winter camping spaces with electricity near the washroom blocks. It is about 131 km (81 miles, 1 hour 50 minutes) southwest of Québec City and 172 km (107 miles) from the Montreal depot, so it suits the first and last nights of a trip rather than carnival evenings. Contact the park to book and confirm winter services.
What is closed in February
- Centre de plein air de Beauport: the City of Québec says its campground opens only from the first weekend of June to Labour Day. In winter the site is for skiing, snowshoeing and skating.
- Camping Valcartier: open mid-June to the end of August.
- Baie de Beauport RV parking: mid-May to mid-October only.
Daytime parking and dump stations
Québec City lists RV day parking on the Plains of Abraham near 835 avenue Wilfrid-Laurier (day only) and at Parc Victoria, plus dump stations including the Garage municipal de Beauport at 415 boulevard Raymond. The city does not say whether the dump stations operate in winter. The carnival also lets you reserve parking near the sites through Clicknpark.
The honest alternative: hotel plus car
The carnival's official accommodation partners include the Fairmont Le Château Frontenac, Hilton Québec and Le Concorde Québec in Old Québec and on the Grande Allée. For most visitors, a hotel plus a rental car or public transport from Montreal is warmer and simpler than a winterised motorhome with no running water. A motorhome makes most sense if you want to combine the carnival with snowshoeing or skiing and you are comfortable with cold nights.
Getting from Montreal to Carnaval de Québec
Québec City is about 250 to 280 km (155 to 175 miles) northeast of Montreal along the St. Lawrence River. Drive times below are free-flow estimates from OSRM, so allow extra time for snow.
- From the Cruise Canada depot (705 Rue Dubois, Saint-Eustache): about 278 km (173 miles), around 3 hours 40 minutes via Autoroute 640 and Autoroute 40 along the north shore.
- From Montréal-Trudeau airport (YUL): about 268 km (166 miles), around 3 hours 40 minutes via Autoroute 20 on the south shore. The depot is about 29 km from the airport and Cruise Canada does not offer airport transfers.
- From downtown Montreal (Gare Centrale): about 251 km (156 miles), around 3 hours 25 minutes.
- Via Gentilly: the depot to Parc régional de la rivière Gentilly is about 172 km (2 hours 15 minutes), then about 131 km (1 hour 50 minutes) to the Old Port.
In Québec City
- Leave the motorhome parked: the carnival recommends RTC public transit to reach its sites. In 2026 free Vidéotron shuttles also ran every 30 minutes between Upper Town and Espace Quatre Cents in the Lower Town.
- Ferry: the Québec to Lévis ferry crosses the St. Lawrence, and the carnival's ice canoe race is watched for free from Quays 19 and 21 of the Port of Québec.
- Winter tyres: Quebec requires winter tyres from 1 December to 15 March on vehicles registered in Québec, including rental cars, with fines of C$200 to C$300. The rule exempts motor homes, so check what tyres your motorhome actually has.
Compare pick-ups on our Montreal page and read the carnival's Getting to the Carnival page.
A 7 night Carnaval de Québec trip from Montreal
This plan matches our live search: pick up Wednesday 3 February, return Wednesday 10 February 2027, covering the carnival's opening weekend. Book the Gentilly winter sites in advance, check the 2027 program when it is published, and watch the forecast every day.
Day 1 (Wed 3 Feb): Pick up and drive to Gentilly
Collect your motorhome in Saint-Eustache (pick-up is normally 1 PM to 4 PM), buy groceries and drinking water, and drive about 172 km (107 miles, around 2 hours 15 minutes) to Parc régional de la rivière Gentilly for a powered winter site.
Day 2 (Thu 4 Feb): On to Québec City
Snowshoe one of Gentilly's trails, then drive about 131 km (81 miles, 1 hour 50 minutes) to the Bassin Louise RV lot in the Old Port. Walk up to Old Québec for dinner.
Day 3 (Fri 5 Feb): Opening night
Buy your Effigy pass and head to the carnival sites for the opening evening. In 2026 the sites opened at 5 PM on the first Friday.
Days 4 and 5 (Sat 6 and Sun 7 Feb): Full carnival days
See Bonhomme's Ice Palace, the ice sculptures and the snow bath, and check the 2027 program for the night parades and the ice canoe race on the St. Lawrence. Take transit or walk rather than moving the motorhome.
Day 6 (Mon 8 Feb): Old Québec at a slower pace
Weekdays are quieter (in 2026 the sites opened at noon on weekdays). Ride the ferry to Lévis for the skyline view.
Day 7 (Tue 9 Feb): Back to Gentilly
Leave Bassin Louise and drive about 130 km (81 miles) to Gentilly for a final powered night.
Day 8 (Wed 10 Feb): Return
Leave early for the 171 km (106 mile) drive and return the motorhome to Saint-Eustache between 9 AM and 11 AM. Late returns are charged 25 dollars an hour on Cruise America's FAQ.
Tips for Carnaval de Québec in an RV
- Decide if a motorhome is right for you. February nights average around minus 15°C, rental motorhomes are winterised with no running water, and there is no RV camping at the carnival. If you want comfort, a hotel near Old Québec plus a car or train is the easier choice.
- Pick the Large 30 ft for unpowered nights. It is the only Cruise Canada model with a generator in Canada, and the Ultra Compact's furnace needs external power.
- Book powered nights first. Confirm a winter site at Parc régional de la rivière Gentilly before you rent, and check the current Bassin Louise rate.
- Ask about tyres. Quebec's winter tyre law exempts motor homes, so ask Cruise Canada what tyres are fitted and drive to the conditions.
- Do not de-winterise lightly. Working water costs up to 60 dollars and any freeze damage is charged to you in full, so plan on public washrooms and bottled water.
- Dress for the cold. The carnival publishes a guide to dressing well in winter, and activities go ahead in snow showers.
Carnaval de Québec (Quebec Winter Carnival) campervan and RV FAQs
Quick answers for planning your trip, checked against official sources.
