The 52nd Winnipeg Folk Festival runs from Thursday 8 to Sunday 11 July 2027 in Birds Hill Provincial Park, about 34 km (21 miles) north-east of Winnipeg, Manitoba. RVs can stay in the Festival Campground or the Quiet Campground with a separate RV/Trailer Permit (C$70 in 2026, unserviced, no generators), which went on sale with tickets in December 2025 and sold out, or in the provincial Birds Hill Campground by reservation. No CRG pickup city is close: in our live search for 3 to 16 July 2027, Cruise Canada motorhomes from Calgary start at C$247.50 a night, and the drive is about 1,365 km (848 miles) each way.

Which rental brands suit the Winnipeg Folk Festival?

There is no Campervan Rental Guide pickup city in Manitoba, so a motorhome for Folk Fest means a long drive. The nearest pickup with vans in our live search is Calgary, about 1,365 km (848 miles) west on the Trans-Canada Highway. One brand returned vehicles there for 3 to 16 July 2027: Cruise Canada (the Canadian arm of Cruise America), from its depot at 2980 26th Street NE. It offers four motorhomes: the Ultra Compact 18 ft (sleeps 2), Compact 21 ft (sleeps 4), Standard 25 ft (sleeps 5) and Large 30 ft (sleeps 7). All four have a toilet, shower and fridge, so they are self-contained for the festival's unserviced RV areas.

CanaDream also appears in our Calgary and Toronto searches but returned no vehicles for these dates, and Edmonton returned nothing at all. Toronto (Cruise Canada's Bolton depot) did return the same four motorhomes, but it is about 1,964 km (1,220 miles) from Birds Hill, so Calgary is the better base.

  • Festival rules fit motorhomes: the festival accepts units registered as motor homes, travel trailers, fifth wheels or tent trailers, plus camper vans. Sleeping in a car, an unconverted van or a box truck is not allowed.
  • No power on site: the festival campgrounds have no water or electrical hook-ups and generators are banned, so the Large 30 ft's generator (the only Cruise Canada model with one) cannot be used there. Cruise America says the Ultra Compact needs external power for its 120 V furnace and air conditioning.
  • One-way option: Cruise America says one-way rentals are available between most rental centres by advance reservation only, with drop fees that vary, an estimated 400 km per night charged for one-ways and a non-refundable down payment. A Calgary to Toronto one-way via Birds Hill (about 3,330 km in total) avoids driving back, but it is not bookable in our search, so ask Cruise Canada directly.
  • Cancellations: Cruise America's FAQ says that for areas where special events such as music festivals occur, cancelling within 45 days of pick-up forfeits your down payment. It does not say whether this covers a Calgary pick-up for Folk Fest, so ask before you pay.

Compare these vehicles for your dates on our Calgary motorhome and campervan page, or see Toronto if you are starting in the east.

What does a Winnipeg Folk Festival RV rental cost?

Live prices from the Campervan Rental Guide search for a Calgary pick-up on Saturday 3 July 2027 and return on Friday 16 July 2027 (13 nights), searched on 19 October 2026. Prices are Canadian dollars per night, with the total for 13 nights.

  • Ultra Compact 18 ft (sleeps 2): C$247.50 a night, C$3,280.51 total
  • Compact 21 ft (sleeps 4): C$258.81 a night, C$3,427.49 total
  • Standard 25 ft (sleeps 5): C$315.69 a night, C$4,166.89 total
  • Large 30 ft (sleeps 7): C$328.50 a night, C$4,333.45 total

The same dates from Toronto (Bolton) ranged from C$247.30 a night for the Ultra Compact to C$296.47 for the Large 30 ft, but the drive is far longer.

What is not in those prices

  • Kilometres: Cruise America charges Canadian rentals for an estimated 160 km per night (2,080 km over 13 nights) at 39 cents per kilometre, collected up front, with extra kilometres charged and unused ones refunded. Our suggested Calgary loop below is about 2,880 km, roughly 1,125 dollars in kilometre charges at that rate. A Half Price Mileage Deal (promo code FRDM) was listed for departures through 31 October 2027. The FAQ does not state the currency.
  • Festival tickets: camping is only sold with a 4-day ticket (4-Day with Festival Camping or 4-Day with Quiet Camping), and everyone 13 and over needs one. Children 12 and under are free. All 2026 ticket types sold out and the page no longer shows their prices.
  • RV/Trailer Permit: C$70 per RV in 2026 (one per vehicle, not per person), sold separately and only valid with a camping ticket. 2027 prices are not yet published.
  • Park vehicle permit: Manitoba charged C$16.50 for a casual permit (three consecutive days), C$9.50 a day or C$44.50 for an annual permit in 2026.
  • Kits and extras: a Personal Kit is listed at 75 dollars per person and a Vehicle Provisioning Kit at 125 dollars per vehicle. A holding tank not emptied before return can add up to 100 dollars. Currency is not stated.
  • Campgrounds on the road: budget for about 8 nights of campgrounds (including Birds Hill Campground) on the suggested trip below.

RV camping at the Winnipeg Folk Festival

The festival calls itself primarily a tent-camping festival, but both of its campgrounds have a dedicated RV/trailer area. Camping is only sold with a 4-day ticket, spots are first come, first served, and every camper aged 13 and over needs a camping ticket. The rules below are from the official camping pages, which still describe the 2026 festival, so confirm them for 2027 on the official camping page.

The RV/Trailer Permit

  • Price and sale date: C$70 per RV in 2026. Permits went on sale on 8 December 2025 at 10 AM, the same time as festival tickets, and there is no second release. 2027 sale dates are not yet announced.
  • Sold out? Join the waitlist (a 10 dollar fee applies only if you are offered a permit) and check the official Ticket Exchange, where sold-out RV permits are resold at face value.
  • What it covers: one parking space for one camping vehicle in the RV area, plus one extra dining or camping tent. Spots cannot be reserved and are assigned in order of arrival, so arrive together if you want to park near friends.
  • No hook-ups, no generators: all festival camping is unserviced. Fire pits, picnic tables, water taps and phone charging stations are shared. Medical device power needs must be arranged in advance through accessibility@winnipegfolkfestival.ca.
  • No moving: once inside, vehicles cannot move until you leave and there are no in and out privileges.
  • Size limits: the festival publishes no length limit for RVs.
  • No pets: pets are on the campground banned list (service dogs are welcome on site).

Festival Campground or Quiet Campground?

  • Festival Campground: a community of about 6,000 campers next to the festival site, with music late into the night, food vendors, a store, cold showers, washrooms and 24 hour first aid. RVs use Zones 4 and 6, about a 20 minute walk from the festival gate. The box office opens at 8 AM on Wednesday.
  • Quiet Campground: about 2,000 campers in a forested area 4 km from the festival site, with flush toilets, shelters and quiet time from 11 PM to 7 AM. RVs use Areas 4 and 6A, with 7B for accessible RV camping. It opens at 12 PM on Wednesday. Shelter power outlets are not for RVs.
  • Leaving: both campgrounds close at noon on the Monday after the festival.

A free shuttle links both campgrounds, the Birds Hill Park campground and the festival site every 30 minutes during festival hours. Coin showers and laundry are at the provincial campground.

Birds Hill Campground (Manitoba Parks)

The festival also points campers to the park's own Birds Hill Campground, which has 476 sites with basic, electrical or full service options, so it is where to stay if you need power. Book through the Manitoba Parks Reservation Service (a 10 dollar reservation fee applies). There is a three night minimum stay from Thursday to Sunday during the festival. In 2026, Birds Hill bookings opened on 14 April at 7 AM, and Manitoba Parks lists Birds Hill among its busiest campgrounds, so watch for the 2027 opening date. Manitoba Parks lists electrical sites at C$17.85 to C$29.95 a night.

Getting from Calgary to the Winnipeg Folk Festival

Birds Hill Provincial Park is about 34 km (21 miles), 20 minutes, north-east of Winnipeg on Highway 59, according to the festival. The drive from the CRG pickup cities is long, so plan it as part of the trip.

  • From the Cruise Canada Calgary depot (2980 26th Street NE): about 1,365 km (848 miles) along the Trans-Canada Highway (Highway 1) through Medicine Hat, Regina and Brandon, around 16 hours of driving at free-flow speeds. Allow two to three days each way.
  • From the Cruise Canada Toronto depot (Bolton): about 1,964 km (1,220 miles) through Thunder Bay and Kenora, around 29 hours of driving. Allow at least four days each way.
  • From downtown Winnipeg or the airport: about 33 km (20 miles) from Portage and Main and 49 km (30 miles) from Winnipeg airport.
  • The last turn: enter Birds Hill Park by the West Gate off Highway 59, follow South Drive and turn right on Festival Drive. RV permit holders turn left into the Festival Campground Parking area. For the Quiet Campground, stay on North Drive instead.
  • Gate times: park gates are closed from 11 PM to 7 AM daily. On Wednesday the West Gate opens at 7 AM and lining up on Highway 59 before then is not allowed. The festival says it can take four to six hours to get everyone through on Wednesday morning.
  • Park pass: every vehicle needs a Manitoba park vehicle permit, bought online at manitobaelicensing.ca, printed and displayed on the dashboard.

Drive times are free-flow estimates from OSRM, so add time for fuel, food and rest stops. If you would rather not drive back, ask Cruise Canada about a one-way rental, and read the festival's transportation page for the Folk Fest Express bus from downtown Winnipeg.

Compare Calgary RV hire

A 13 night Winnipeg Folk Festival road trip from Calgary

This plan matches our live search: pick up Saturday 3 July, return Friday 16 July 2027. Cruise Canada centres are closed on Sundays and holidays, and pick-up is normally 1 PM to 4 PM with drop-off 9 AM to 11 AM. Book campgrounds early and check each park's 2027 dates.

Day 1 (Sat 3 Jul): Calgary to Medicine Hat

Collect your motorhome, stock up and drive about 290 km (180 miles, around 3.5 hours) east on Highway 1 to a campground in Medicine Hat.

Day 2 (Sun 4 Jul): Medicine Hat to Regina

Cross into Saskatchewan and drive about 466 km (289 miles, around 5.5 hours) to Regina.

Day 3 (Mon 5 Jul): Regina to Spruce Woods

Drive about 450 km (279 miles, around 6 hours) to Kiche Manitou Campground in Spruce Woods Provincial Park, Manitoba, home of the Spirit Sands dunes and the Devil's Punch Bowl. It is one of the province's busiest campgrounds, so reserve ahead.

Day 4 (Tue 6 Jul): Spruce Woods to Birds Hill

Drive about 248 km (154 miles, around 3.5 hours) to Birds Hill Campground. Buy groceries and ice in Winnipeg on the way, and fill your fresh water tank before the festival.

Day 5 (Wed 7 Jul): Into the festival campground

Move the short distance to the Festival Campground (box office from 8 AM) or the Quiet Campground (from 12 PM), swap your RV permit ticket for a dashboard permit and set up.

Days 6 to 9 (Thu 8 to Sun 11 Jul): Festival days

Your motorhome stays put. Walk or take the free shuttle to the stages.

Day 10 (Mon 12 Jul): Riding Mountain

Pack out before noon and drive about 288 km (179 miles, around 4 hours) to Wasagaming Campground in Riding Mountain National Park, which has over 400 reservable sites including fully serviced ones. Manitoba park permits are not valid here, so you need a Parks Canada pass.

Days 11 to 13 (Tue 13 to Thu 15 Jul): Back across the prairies

Drive about 381 km (237 miles) to Regina, then 467 km (290 miles) to Medicine Hat, then 289 km (179 miles) to Calgary. The Calgary Stampede runs from 9 to 18 July 2027, so book your last night early: Mountain View Camping, 3 km east of the city on Highway 1, does not refund Stampede bookings.

Day 14 (Fri 16 Jul): Return

Empty the tanks and return the motorhome to the Calgary depot between 9 AM and 11 AM.

Tips for the Winnipeg Folk Festival in an RV

  • Be online when permits go on sale. RV/Trailer Permits went on sale with festival tickets in December 2025, sold out and were not released again. Buy your 4-day camping tickets at the same time.
  • Book a backup at Birds Hill Campground. If you miss out on a permit, a provincial campsite with power and the free festival shuttle is the next best thing. Remember the three night minimum over the festival weekend.
  • Plan for no power. No hook-ups and no generators means your motorhome runs on its battery and propane for five nights. Bring solar chargers or power banks, and ask Cruise Canada what still works without shore power.
  • Arrive with empty tanks. We could not find a dump station listed for the festival campgrounds, and Cruise America can charge up to 100 dollars for a tank that is not emptied before return.
  • Leave pets at home. Cruise America allows pets, but the festival campgrounds do not.
  • Count the kilometres. At 39 cents a kilometre, a Calgary round trip costs more than 1,000 dollars in mileage alone, so check the Half Price Mileage Deal or a one-way before you book.
