About Cruise America
Cruise America started in Miami, Florida, in 1972 and has been run from Mesa, Arizona, since 1993. It calls itself the largest RV rental company in the USA, and since 2014 it has been privately held and fully owned by its employees through an employee share ownership plan. Its Canadian arm, Cruise Canada, rents the same motorhomes under the same rules. In the USA Cruise America rents from 113 locations in 36 states: 10 company-run hubs plus 103 independent dealers, such as truck rental firms, garages and RV storage yards, that rent its RVs under the Cruise America brand.
The fleet is Class C motorhomes, mostly built by Thor Motor Coach to Cruise America's design on Ford petrol chassis, from the 2-berth Ultra Compact to the 30 ft Large for up to 7, plus a towable travel trailer at a handful of sites. All are automatic, none has a slide-out, and every motorhome is pet friendly. Miles are charged at US$0.39 each on top of the nightly rate, with an estimate paid up front.
Is Cruise America a good choice?
For Australian, British and New Zealand travellers planning Cruise America RV rentals, it suits anyone who wants a pick-up close to almost any part of the USA, a dog on board or a simple, practical motorhome. Its 20 main locations average 4.1 out of 5 across more than 7,200 Google reviews, led by San Diego (4.7) and Phoenix (4.5), while some dealer sites, such as Chicago (East Dundee), score much lower. On Trustpilot it rates 4.0 from more than 8,000 reviews. Budget for miles, bedding and kitchen kits and generator hours, and plan around Sunday closures and the lack of airport shuttles.

Cruise America RV rental in the USA
Cruise America rents four Class C motorhomes, all automatic, two-wheel drive and petrol: the Ultra Compact (19.6 ft, 5.94 m, sleeps 2), the Compact (20.5 ft, 6.55 m, sleeps 4), the Standard (25 ft, 7.6 m, sleeps 5) and the Large (30 ft, 9.1 m, sleeps 7). Each has a kitchen, toilet and shower, and all but the Ultra Compact carry a generator. The Standard and Large are available at all 113 locations and the Compact at 32, while the Ultra Compact is rented only at Phoenix, Denver, Salt Lake City, Seattle, Bozeman and Portland. The Adventure Travel Trailer, towed by your own vehicle, is offered at 11 sites.
One-ways between most US locations are allowed with approval, and current deals include half-price mileage, a free fifth night on rentals of 5 nights or more, and relocations to Phoenix from US$39 a night with free miles. In cold regions RVs are winterised from about mid-October to late March, so the water system is drained.

Opening hours
Cruise America rents from 113 US locations, and this page lists the 20 main ones: its 10 company hubs (Anchorage, Phoenix in Mesa, Los Angeles in Carson, San Francisco in Newark, Denver in Frederick, Orlando in Kissimmee, Las Vegas in Henderson, Salt Lake City, Washington DC in Warrenton and Seattle in Everett) plus dealer sites for Miami, Chicago, Boston, San Diego, the New York area (Kenvil, New Jersey, and Bay Shore on Long Island) and the gateways to the Grand Canyon, Zion, Yellowstone and Glacier. The other 93 are smaller dealer-run sites in many more towns and cities, so check Cruise America's location list if you want to start somewhere else. No pick-ups or returns can be booked on Sundays or public holidays, pick-ups run 1pm to 4pm and returns 9am to 11am, and the hubs switch to shorter winter hours from 11 October. Frequently asked questions
Who owns Cruise America?
Its employees. Cruise America has been privately held and 100% employee-owned through an employee share ownership plan since 2014. It was founded in Miami in 1972, was listed on the American Stock Exchange from the early 1980s, belonged to Budget Group from the late 1990s and was bought back by the founding family and management in 2000.
Is Cruise Canada the same company as Cruise America?
Yes. Cruise Canada has been Cruise America's wholly owned Canadian subsidiary since 1987, and both share one website, reservations line, fleet and set of rules. In Canada you pay in Canadian dollars and per kilometre, and one-way rentals between the USA and Canada are not allowed.
How much does Cruise America charge per mile?
US$0.39 a mile. An estimate of 100 miles a night on round trips, or 250 miles a night on one-ways, is charged up front, and direct renters are refunded unused estimated miles or pay for extra ones on return. The Half Price Mileage Deal (code FRDM) cuts the rate to US$0.19 on round trips departing by 31 October 2027.
How much does a Cruise America one-way rental cost?
The drop fee depends on the route, dates and vehicle, and ran from US$350 to US$1,000 in the 2026 terms. One-ways between most US locations need advance booking and approval, the US$300 down payment becomes non-refundable once confirmed, and returning to an unbooked location costs US$3,000. Popular routes include Los Angeles to Denver and Las Vegas to Phoenix.
Are pets allowed in Cruise America RVs?
Yes, every Cruise America motorhome is pet friendly, mainly for dogs and cats, and no pet fee is published. Clean up after your pet, as a cleaning fee of up to US$250 applies if the RV comes back dirty.
What size Cruise America RV do I need?
The Ultra Compact sleeps 2, the Compact up to 4, the Standard up to 5 and the Large up to 7, and the Standard is the most popular. The Adventure Travel Trailer sleeps 4 but needs your own vehicle rated to tow 3,800 lb with a Class III hitch.
Does Cruise America have an airport shuttle?
No. Every location is off-airport and you arrange your own taxi or rideshare. Pick-ups usually run from 1pm to 4pm, so most overseas visitors stay a night near the depot first, and returns are due between 9am and 11am, with US$25 an hour charged after that.
Can I take a Cruise America RV to Canada or Mexico?
Canada yes, as long as you bring the RV back to the USA, as one-ways between the two countries are not allowed. Canadian residents can't take a US rental into Canada. Mexico is never allowed.
Can I drive a Cruise America RV to Death Valley or Alaska?
Death Valley and other deserts are allowed, but in July and August you go at your own risk. In Alaska, the Yukon, the Northwest Territories and Newfoundland you must stay on public numbered roads, with no unpaved, logging or back roads. Manhattan, and any underground or underwater tunnel, is off limits.
How much is the Cruise America generator?
US$3.50 per running hour on the Large, Standard and Compact, and overseas tour-operator bookings can prepay unlimited use at US$8 a day. The Ultra Compact and the travel trailer have no generator.
What is included in a Cruise America rental?
The RV comes with a power cord, water and sewer hoses, an electrical adapter, RV toilet paper and a KOA Value Card. Bedding (the Personal Kit, listed at US$75 per person), the Vehicle Provisioning Kit with kitchen gear (listed at US$125), miles, generator hours, a US$9.95 environmental fee, a US$50 preparation fee and sales tax are extra.
Can overseas visitors rent from Cruise America?
Yes, and the company is set up for international renters, with multilingual guides and a pre-arrival check-in site. Every driver must be 21 or over and show a valid physical licence, overseas renters also show a passport, and you need a credit card in the renter's name.
