About El Monte RV
El Monte RV began in 1970 as a family business in El Monte, California, and now runs one of the largest RV rental networks in the USA, with 18 depots from Los Angeles and San Francisco to New York and Miami. It belongs to Tourism Holdings (thl), the New Zealand group behind maui, Britz, Apollo and Mighty, which completed its purchase in January 2017. El Monte RV and Road Bear RV are trading names of the same US rental company and operate as one business, sharing depots in Las Vegas, Denver, Seattle, Orlando, New York and Los Angeles.
The fleet is mostly Class C motorhomes, the American style with a separate truck cab and a bed above the driver, in four sizes from the 21 to 23 ft Class C Small to the 30 to 32 ft Family Sleeper. El Monte also rents thl's US Mighty label: a Class B camper van, two Mighty Class C models and a bus-style Mighty Class A. Every model is an automatic petrol vehicle with a toilet and shower, the motorhomes carry a generator, and miles are charged on top of the nightly rate unless you buy unlimited miles.
Is El Monte RV a good choice?
For British, Australian and New Zealand travellers planning El Monte RV hire, it suits anyone who wants the widest choice of pick-up cities, a dog on board or a one-way trip across the country. Its Google branch ratings average 4.6 out of 5 across more than 7,300 reviews, led by San Francisco (Dublin) at 4.8, while smaller depots such as Chicago and Salt Lake City score lower. Budget for the extras: miles at US$0.38 each, kitchen and linen kits, and liability cover. If you want hotel shuttles and a newer fleet, compare its sister brand Road Bear RV.

El Monte RV rentals in the USA
El Monte rents four Class C sizes: Small (21 to 23 ft, sleeps 4), Medium (24 to 26 ft, sleeps 5), Large (27 to 29 ft, sleeps 6) and Family Sleeper (30 to 32 ft, sleeps 7). It also offers thl's Mighty range: a Class B camper van for 4, the Mighty Class C Medium and Large, and the 30 to 34 ft Mighty Class A. The camper van is listed only at Los Angeles, San Francisco, Las Vegas and Chicago, and the smaller depots carry the El Monte Class C models only. Rentals are priced per night, and miles cost US$0.38 each unless you prepay 100-mile packs or buy unlimited miles.
One-way rentals are allowed between any El Monte depots, usually for US$200 to US$750, and daily one-way specials can waive the fee. In autumn, Canada to US relocations start at CanaDream depots such as Vancouver and finish at El Monte depots from US$1 a night with free miles. Death Valley is closed to rentals from June to September, and Manhattan is off limits all year.

Frequently asked questions
Who owns El Monte RV?
Tourism Holdings (thl), the New Zealand-listed RV group that also owns maui, Britz, Apollo, Mighty, Road Bear RV and CanaDream. thl completed its purchase of El Monte in January 2017. The business itself started in El Monte, California, in 1970.
Is El Monte RV the same company as Road Bear RV?
Yes. Both are trading names of the same rental company, El Monte Rents, Inc., and they share depots in Las Vegas, Denver, Seattle, Orlando, New York (Linden, New Jersey) and Los Angeles (Agoura Hills). Road Bear runs a smaller Class C fleet with free hotel shuttles and no pets, while El Monte has more depots and vehicle types, cheaper miles and allows pets.
What is the difference between a Class C and a Class A motorhome?
A Class C has a separate truck-style cab with a bed above it, while a Class A is a larger, bus-style motorhome with a flat front. Class C models are the easier size for most overseas visitors. El Monte's Class C range runs from 21 to 32 ft, and the Mighty Class A is 30 to 34 ft.
Does El Monte RV charge per mile?
Yes. Miles are not unlimited by default: prepay 100-mile packs at US$37 each or pay US$0.38 a mile when you return. Unlimited miles cost US$1,135 for rentals of up to 21 nights plus US$35 for each extra night, and monthly rentals include 1,500 miles. That per-mile rate is lower than Road Bear's US$0.47 and close to Cruise America's US$0.39.
How much does an El Monte one-way rental cost?
Usually US$200 to US$750 on top of the rental, depending on the route, and more if the RV has to be repositioned. One-ways are allowed between any El Monte depots when a vehicle is available, daily one-way specials can drop the fee and add free miles, and trips within one state tend to cost less.
Can overseas visitors rent from El Monte RV?
Yes. Every driver must be 21 or over with a full, physical licence from their home country, and you should carry an International Driving Permit if it is not in English. You can't collect the RV on the day you land from an overseas flight, so book a hotel night first.
How much is the El Monte RV security deposit?
US$1,500, secured on a credit card in the main renter's name at pick-up and released after the return inspection, usually within 7 to 14 business days. It is separate from the US$300 down payment you pay when booking, and events such as Burning Man carry higher deposits.
Is generator use free with El Monte RV?
Yes, for now. Current bookings include unlimited generator use and you only pay for the fuel it burns. From 1 April 2027 unlimited generator use becomes a paid option at US$3.50 an hour or US$12 a night.
Does El Monte RV have an airport shuttle?
No. Every El Monte depot is away from the airport and you collect the RV at the depot, so take a taxi or rideshare. Las Vegas is the closest to its airport at about 7.5 miles, and around Los Angeles and San Francisco El Monte can deliver the RV for a fee.
Can I take my dog in an El Monte RV?
Yes, pets travel at no extra charge. You pay cleaning or damage fees if the RV comes back with pet hair, smells, stains or damage. Road Bear, the sister brand, does not allow pets.
Can I drive an El Monte RV to Canada, Alaska or Mexico?
Canada yes, with a passport or Real ID, but far-northern routes and Alaska need approval at booking and a US$450 Far North Surcharge. Mexico is allowed only in approved areas with a written permit and El Monte's Mexico insurance at US$22 a night, and there is no roadside help there. Death Valley is off limits from 1 June to 30 September.
What extras should I budget for with El Monte RV?
Plan for a kitchen kit (US$140 per rental), linen kits (US$75 per person), liability cover from US$17.50 a night, state fees and a US$50 vehicle readiness fee. Extra drivers cost US$6 a night each, or come bundled in the Gold package (US$119 per rental) with roadside cover and awning use.
