Rainbow Spirit Festival 2027, the camping festival formerly known as Rainbow Serpent, runs from Friday 5 to Monday 8 March 2027 at Colston Hill, Glenaroua, about 110 km or 1.5 hours north of Melbourne. Camping is included in every festival ticket (the Final Round is $420 plus a fee), and each vehicle that enters the camping area needs a vehicle pass: $40 for a standard vehicle or $60 for a large RV, caravan or bus. In our live search for 4 to 9 March 2027, Melbourne campervan hire starts from about $101 a day, with Apollo, Auto Sleepers, Britz, Camperman, Campervan Village, Jucy, Maui, Mighty and Star RV all showing vans.
Which rental brands suit Rainbow Spirit Festival?
Nine brands we compare returned 49 campervans and motorhomes from Melbourne in our live search for Thursday 4 to Tuesday 9 March 2027: Apollo, Auto Sleepers, Britz, Camperman, Campervan Village, Jucy, Maui, Mighty and Star RV. We found no festival-specific rental rules, so read each brand's terms on unsealed roads and paddock parking before you book. The festival's own rules matter more, because the size of your van decides which vehicle pass you buy and whether you must register it.
- Budget two to four sleepers: Campervan Village (Mini Camper with a rooftop tent, Aventus, Johnny Feelgood, Alice Chillgood), Jucy (Chill'd Cloudbreak, Crib Plus, Coaster, Condo) and Mighty (HiLITE, DeLITE, Highball, Double Down) suit couples and small groups who will use the festival showers and toilets.
- Self-contained with shower and toilet: Mighty Duo, Deuce and Deuce Plus, Apollo Euro Mini, Euro Tourer and Euro Plus, Britz Trailblazer, Star RV Polaris 2, Maui Ultima Plus and the Auto Sleepers Kea Nomad suit travellers who want a bathroom on board.
- Four to six berths for families and groups: Britz Voyager and Warrior 4WD, Campervan Village Desert Sands and Grip 4x4, Camperman Maxie 4, Mighty Double Up and Big Six, Apollo Euro Quest, Euro Camper and Euro Deluxe, Jucy Chill'd Big Kahuna, Maui Sunset and Star RV Polaris 6.
- Size and vehicle pass: a compact campervan is the easiest fit. At the 2026 festival, motorhomes, RVs and campervans over 7 metres (22 feet) had to be pre-registered and approved, so check your van's length with the brand before you choose a six berth motorhome.
Travellers Autobarn and Spaceships appear in our Melbourne operator list but returned no vans for these dates, so we do not list them as bookable. Our Melbourne search also lets you change the drop-off city if you want a one-way hire after the festival.
How much does campervan hire for Rainbow Spirit Festival cost?
Prices below are in Australian dollars per day from our live Melbourne search on 19 October 2026, picking up Thursday 4 March 2027 and returning Tuesday 9 March 2027. Almost every vehicle showed Available Now with instant confirmation, and the Campervan Village Grip 4x4 showed on request. The results page also shows a total for the hire, for example $669.45 for the Jucy Chill'd Cloudbreak and $815.85 for the Campervan Village Mini Camper.
- Two sleepers without a shower and toilet: about $112 to $239 a day (Jucy Chill'd Cloudbreak and Campervan Village Aventus to Britz Maverick).
- Three to five sleepers without a shower and toilet: about $101 to $263 a day (Campervan Village Mini Camper, Jucy Crib Plus and Condo, Camperman Juliette, Britz Voyager and Warrior 4WD, Auto Sleepers Kea Navigator).
- Two and three sleepers with shower and toilet: about $204 to $328 a day (Mighty Duo, Apollo Euro Mini, Britz Trailblazer, Star RV Polaris 2, Maui Ultima Plus, Auto Sleepers Kea Nomad).
- Four sleepers with shower and toilet: about $226 to $261 a day (Mighty Double Up, Apollo Euro Quest, Camperman Maxie 4, Apollo Euro Camper).
- Six sleepers: about $232 to $306 a day (Mighty Big Six, Jucy Chill'd Big Kahuna, Star RV Polaris 6, Apollo Euro Deluxe, Maui Sunset).
These rates leave out insurance excess options, one-way fees, extras such as camping chairs and kits, and fuel. They also leave out the festival's own costs, which Rainbow Spirit sells through Humanitix in Australian dollars: a Final Round festival ticket with camping is $420 plus a $15.14 fee (the $365 First Release and $395 Second Release have sold out), and a vehicle pass is $40 for a standard vehicle, $50 for a vehicle towing a small trailer or camper, or $60 for a large RV, caravan or bus, each plus a small fee. Tickets are not refundable. Check the official ticket page for current prices.
Rainbow Spirit camping in a campervan: passes, sizes and rules
Rainbow Spirit is a camping festival: every festival ticket for 2027 is sold as an event ticket and camping, valid from 12pm on Friday 5 March. You can bring a campervan, but it needs a vehicle pass on top of your ticket. The 2027 festival moves to a new site at Colston Hill, Glenaroua, and its detailed camping rules had not been published when we checked in October 2026. The rules below marked 2026 come from the 2026 festival at Tallarook, so check the official site for 2027 updates.
Which vehicle pass do I need?
- Vehicle Pass, Standard, $40: for one standard vehicle. The festival says a pass is required for any vehicle entering the festival camping area, one per vehicle.
- Vehicle Pass, Small Trailer and Camper, $50: for a vehicle towing a single axle trailer, camper trailer or similar compact set-up, which you can set up alongside your vehicle in the general camping area.
- Vehicle Pass, Large RV, Caravan and Bus, $60: for tandem axle or larger caravans, motorhomes, RVs and oversized camping vehicles. These may be sent to a flatter, designated large vehicle area.
- Not sure which pass fits your hire van? A compact campervan usually counts as a standard vehicle, and a motorhome as a large RV. If in doubt, contact the festival before you buy.
Large campervans and motorhomes
- In 2026, caravans, RVs, large campervans, large camper trailers and oversized vehicles had to be pre-registered and approved, and unregistered vehicles could be refused entry.
- The 2026 Survival Guide defined oversized as motorhomes, RVs and campervans over 7 metres (22 feet), caravans and camper trailers over 4.2 metres (14 feet), and any vehicle needing more space than a standard camping set-up. Registered oversize vehicles had their own entry lane.
- Ask your rental brand for the exact length of your van before you buy the pass.
Campground rules to know (2026)
- Camping spaces could not be saved or reserved, and staff directed vehicles into the campgrounds on arrival. Arrive together or travel in convoy if you want to camp with friends.
- Any source of flame or heat was banned on site, including candles, campfires, barbecues and gas stoves, a requirement set by the CFA. Plan meals that do not need your van's gas cooker.
- Generators, private sound systems, glass, drones and pets (assistance animals excepted) were not allowed. Geodomes and large structures were banned, but small gazebos and personal shade were fine.
- No vehicle movement was allowed in the campgrounds after 9pm, and there were no pass-outs or re-entry once you were on site.
- Showers ran from 8am to 2pm each day with $5 tokens from the general store, and free drinking water was available near all toilet and shower facilities. We found no mention of powered sites or a dump point on site.
Family camping and glamping
The 2027 listing promises a Kids Space and dedicated family camping, with kids under 12 free. Sleepy Hollow Glamping packages with a pre-pitched bell tent and festival entry for two cost $1,400 (3 metre tent) or $1,500 (4 metre tent).
How to get from Melbourne to Rainbow Spirit Festival
Colston Hill, at 1755 Seymour-Tooborac Road, Glenaroua, is about 110 km by road north of Melbourne's CBD, around 1.5 hours of driving without traffic, and about 100 km from Melbourne Airport. The usual route is:
- Head north out of Melbourne to the Hume Freeway (M31), for example via CityLink or the Hume Highway through Somerton.
- Follow the Hume Freeway north for about 60 km and take the Seymour-Tooborac Road (C384) exit near Seymour.
- Follow Seymour-Tooborac Road west for about 15 km to the festival entrance, then follow event signage and traffic staff.
The festival runs over the Victorian Labour Day long weekend (Monday 8 March 2027 is a public holiday), so expect busy roads on the Friday afternoon and on Monday. Seymour, about 20 km east of the site, is the nearest large town for fuel, food and water. At the 2026 festival, gates opened for entry only at set times from midday Friday, so plan to arrive after 12pm on Friday 5 March.
Where to pick up your campervan
- Britz: 40 Hume Highway, Somerton, on the way north. Britz lists 9am to 3:30pm every day and asks you to collect or return at least one hour before closing.
- Other brands: check Apollo, Auto Sleepers, Camperman, Campervan Village, Jucy, Maui, Mighty and Star RV depot locations and hours when you book.
We picked up on Thursday 4 March so you have a day to shop and pack before gates open, and returned on Tuesday 9 March to avoid driving back on the holiday Monday after three nights of camping. If you would rather not drive, the official shuttle bus runs from Southern Cross Station on Friday 5 March from 11am and returns on Monday 8 March, for $120 return plus a fee, and includes centrally located car-free camping. Start from our Melbourne campervan hire page.
A 6 day Rainbow Spirit Festival campervan trip from Melbourne
This plan matches our search dates, collecting on Thursday 4 March 2027 and returning on Tuesday 9 March. Buy your festival ticket and vehicle pass first, and register a large vehicle if the festival asks you to.
Day 1 (Thursday 4 March): Collect your campervan
Pick up in Melbourne well before the depot's last collection time. Shop for food that does not need cooking, plenty of water, ice, shade, warm layers and a torch, as gas cooking was banned on site in 2026. Stay at a caravan park on the way north, as the festival site does not open before Friday.
Day 2 (Friday 5 March): Drive in and set up
Drive up the Hume Freeway, top up fuel and water in Seymour, and arrive after the 12pm opening. Meet your group beforehand and convoy in, because in 2026 camping spots could not be saved.
Days 3 and 4 (Saturday 6 and Sunday 7 March): The festival
Explore the stages, art, workshops and markets. Use the showers in the morning and keep the van parked: in 2026 no vehicles could move in the campgrounds after 9pm.
Day 5 (Monday 8 March): Pack up and rest
The festival finishes at 2pm on Labour Day. Pack up, take all your rubbish with you, and only drive when you are rested and fit to drive. Book a caravan park near Seymour or on the way to Melbourne for the night rather than driving straight back.
Day 6 (Tuesday 9 March): Return the van
Drive back to Melbourne, empty the toilet cassette and waste tanks at a dump point, refuel, and return the campervan before the depot's last return time.
Tips for Rainbow Spirit Festival in a campervan
- Buy the right vehicle pass: a standard pass is $40 and a large RV, caravan and bus pass is $60. In 2026 the gate price for a vehicle pass was $150, so buy it online first.
- Check your van's length: in 2026 campervans and motorhomes over 7 metres had to be registered and approved before the festival, so ask the rental brand for the exact length.
- Plan to eat without gas: in 2026 the CFA rules banned gas stoves, barbecues and any flame on site, so your van's cooker stays off. Pack food that needs no cooking or use the festival food stalls.
- Arrive with full water and a plan to leave once: there were no pass-outs or re-entry in 2026, so fill your tanks and stock up in Seymour before you arrive.
- Pack for all weather: the festival warns of hot sun and dust as well as cold nights, rain and mud. Bring warm layers, sun protection, a torch and earplugs.
- Book early: Rainbow Spirit 2026 sold out, and the first two 2027 ticket releases have already sold out. Tickets are not refundable but can be resold through Humanitix.
