Getting to Your Hobart Depot

  • From Hobart Airport: the Apollo, Britz, maui and Mighty depot on Long Street is a 400 m walk from the terminal, and LeisureRent runs a free weekday shuttle to Hawksford Road. A taxi or rideshare to the other Cambridge depots takes about 5 minutes and costs roughly $15 to $20.
  • From the city: allow 15 to 20 minutes by taxi or rideshare over the Tasman Bridge. The SkyBus Hobart City Express runs daily to the airport terminal, a short walk from Long Street.
  • Late flights and Sundays: the Long Street depot hands over until 2:30pm, so an afternoon arrival may mean collecting next morning. Spaceships offers 24/7 contactless pick-up and LeisureRent a gate lockbox, while Campervan Village closes on Sundays.
  • Parking your own car: most depots have no customer parking. There is paid parking beside the Long Street depot, and secure parking at Airport Undercover Parking, 94 Kennedy Drive, 3.1 km away.

Depot details checked October 2026. Hours change over public holidays and in winter; your booking confirmation is the final word.

What's on in Hobart

Hobart's festivals run from the summer waterfront to midwinter, so book early if your trip lines up with one.

Dec to Jan

Taste of Summer

Princes Wharf No. 1, Hobart

Eight days of Tasmanian food, drink and live music on the waterfront, as Sydney Hobart yachts tie up nearby.

Feb

Australian Wooden Boat Festival

Hobart waterfront

Tall ships and classic boats fill the docks for four free days, the same weekend as the Royal Hobart Regatta.

Jun

Dark Mofo

Venues across Hobart

Mona's winter festival returns in full for 2027 with art, music, the Winter Feast and the Nude Solstice Swim.

Jul

Festival of Voices

Venues across Hobart

Ten days of concerts, choirs and singing workshops from 2 to 11 July 2027, including the free Big Sing.

Quick Event Tips for Hobart Travellers

  • Book Summer Early: Taste of Summer, the Wooden Boat Festival and the Regatta all fall between late December and early February, Hobart's busiest stretch for campervan hire.
  • Leave the Van at the Park: Waterfront parking for long vehicles is tight during festivals, so catch a Metro Tasmania bus or a taxi into the city from your holiday park.
  • Winter Ready: For Dark Mofo and Festival of Voices, choose a van with heating and check Pinnacle Road status before driving up kunanyi, as snow can close it.

Holiday parks and attractions around Hobart

Where to stay with the van close to the city, and the Hobart sights and short trips worth a full day.

Holiday parks where you can stay with your campervan

Discovery Parks - Hobart

On the eastern shore at Risdon, about 12 minutes from the city centre, this park looks back across the Derwent to kunanyi / Mount Wellington. Powered sites suit campervans and motorhomes, and some have a private ensuite. A sheltered BBQ area, laundry, kiosk and mini golf keep things easy, with MONA and Richmond a short drive away. Campfires are banned from November to April.

Barilla Holiday Park

Set among gum trees in Cambridge, Barilla is about 15 minutes from Hobart's CBD and minutes from the airport, which suits a first or last night with the van. Caravan and motorhome sites sit alongside cabins and a camping ground, with a camp kitchen, laundry, sheltered BBQs and gas refills on site. An 18-hole mini golf course keeps kids busy, and historic Richmond is close by.

BIG4 Hobart Airport Tourist Park

Minutes from Hobart Airport and around 15 minutes from the city, this Cambridge park is a practical base for collecting or dropping off a van. Choose an ensuite powered site, a powered campervan site or a grassed dog-friendly site, with a camp kitchen, laundry, dump point and gas refills. A free airport shuttle runs in office hours, handy if you fly out after returning the van.

Snug Beach Cabin and Caravan Park

On North West Bay about 30 minutes south of Hobart, this park is 10 minutes from the Bruny Island ferry at Kettering, an easy base for an early crossing. There are 40 powered sites, some of them drive-through, and a few grassed sites front the beach. You also get a camp kitchen with undercover BBQs, a coin laundry and a dump point, with Snug's shops and tavern nearby.

Top attractions to build your trip around

Visitor on the kunanyi / Mount Wellington summit viewing platform at dawn, above Hobart

kunanyi / Mount Wellington

Rising to 1,271 metres behind the city, kunanyi / Mount Wellington looks out over Hobart and the River Derwent. Pinnacle Road climbs to the summit, but parking at the top is limited and snow can close the road, so check its status first or ride the shuttle bus. Campervans and motorhomes cannot park overnight in Wellington Park, so treat it as a day trip from your holiday park.

Saturday stalls at Salamanca Market in front of the sandstone warehouses of Salamanca Place

Salamanca Market

Every Saturday from 8.30am to 3pm, Salamanca Market fills Salamanca Place with stalls selling Tasmanian produce, crafts and street food in front of the old sandstone warehouses. Run by the City of Hobart, it is a short walk from the waterfront and Battery Point. Inner-city parking is tight for a campervan, so catch a bus or taxi in from your park and arrive early.

MONA Museum of Old and New Art on the River Derwent north of Hobart

MONA

About 11 km north of the city on the Derwent, Mona, the Museum of Old and New Art, is around 20 minutes by road or 30 minutes on its fast ferry from Brooke Street Pier. On-site parking is limited with no room for caravans, so most visitors take the ferry and make a day of the art, wine and oysters. Mona opens Thursday to Monday, 10am to 5pm.

Aerial view of The Neck on Bruny Island, with beach, ocean and road

Bruny Island

Drive about 40 minutes south to Kettering for the 20-minute vehicle ferry to Bruny Island, which leaves every 20 minutes through the day. Return fares start from $58.60 per vehicle, so check the price for your van. Local produce, oysters and wildlife fill a full day, and South Bruny National Park needs a parks pass. Some roads are gravel, so check your rental terms first.

I recently booked a campervan through this company. It was my first time booking an RV and I had a lot of questions & fears going into booking a vehicle that was worth so much & really needed to understand how the process works. I called the company & was given detailed information on what to expect & was guided through the process. They even mentioned I could call back with any further questions to ensure I was happy & comfortable with my decision. I rented the vehicle for 14 days and drove from Brisbane to Jindabyne to go Skiing. I would definitely book through this company again.

Hobart Campervan Hire Itineraries

See our full 15 day Tasmania road trip →

Hobart to Launceston via the West Coast (14 Days)

+

Days 1-2: Hobart & kunanyi/Mount Wellington

+
−

Day 1: Collect your van from a depot beside Hobart Airport at Cambridge, where several close by mid-afternoon, so a morning flight helps. Do a big grocery shop before crossing the Tasman Bridge, then spend the late afternoon wandering Battery Point and the waterfront. Base yourself for two nights at the Hobart Showground motorhome park in Glenorchy or a holiday park near the airport.

Day 2: Leave the van at camp and catch a bus into the city for Salamanca Place, or take the MONA ferry from Brooke Street Pier, as the big city car parks have low height limits. If the summit is clear, drive the narrow, winding Pinnacle Road up kunanyi/Mount Wellington for views over the Derwent. Check the City of Hobart road status first, as it closes in snow and ice.

Days 3-4: Huon Valley & the Far South

+
−

Day 3: Head south about 40 minutes to Huonville, the heart of Tasmania's apple and cider country, then follow the river through Franklin to Geeveston for riverside cafes and farm gate stalls. Continue to Dover, a quiet fishing town on the D'Entrecasteaux Channel with a beachfront holiday park. Top up the fuel tank before you leave the Huon, as towns thin out further south.

Day 4: Drive about 25 minutes to Hastings Caves State Reserve for a guided cave tour, then warm up in the thermal pool, which sits at around 28°C all year. No parks pass is needed here, but buy cave tickets at the visitor centre before your tour. Drive back north to Huonville or Cygnet for the night, leaving the reserve before dusk to avoid wildlife on the road.

Days 5-6: Mount Field & Lake St Clair

+
−

Day 5: Drive through the Derwent Valley via New Norfolk to Mount Field National Park, about 2 hours from the Huon or just over an hour from Hobart. Buy a parks pass at the visitor centre, as this is the first national park on the route. Walk the sealed track to Russell Falls, about 25 minutes return, and camp beside the Tyenna River so you can come back after dark to spot glow worms.

Day 6: Walk among the giant swamp gums on the Tall Trees track in the morning, but skip the gravel Lake Dobson Road, which Parks says is not suitable for campervans. Follow the Lyell Highway west through the Central Highlands to Lake St Clair, about 1.5 hours, and take a lakeside walk from Cynthia Bay. Stay near Derwent Bridge and watch for wallabies on the road at dusk.

Days 7-8: Queenstown & Strahan

+
−

Day 7: Allow about two hours for the winding run to Queenstown, stopping for the short rainforest walk to Nelson Falls. Take the steep bends into town slowly, then refuel and restock, as services on the West Coast are spread out. Continue about 40 minutes to Strahan on Macquarie Harbour and book a powered site for two nights, as the town fills up in summer.

Day 8: Spend the day on the water with a Gordon River cruise into the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area, with stops at the Sarah Island convict ruins and the rainforest boardwalk at Heritage Landing. Back on shore, walk to Hogarth Falls or watch the surf at Ocean Beach. Download offline maps tonight, as mobile coverage is patchy on tomorrow's drive north.

Days 9-10: Cradle Mountain

+
−

Day 9: Drive north through Zeehan and along the Murchison Highway, about 2 to 2.5 hours with few towns, so leave Strahan with a full tank. Check in at a holiday park near the Cradle Mountain visitor centre. Campervans and motorhomes are not allowed on Dove Lake Road at any time, so plan to leave the van at the visitor centre and buy shuttle tickets there.

Day 10: Take an early shuttle to Dove Lake and walk the circuit, about 6 km and two to three hours, with the mountain mirrored in the water on still mornings. Carry waterproof layers, as the weather at this altitude can change fast in any season. In the late afternoon, look for wombats grazing around Ronny Creek before a second night at the park.

Days 11-12: Mole Creek & Launceston

+
−

Day 11: Head east about 1.5 hours to Mole Creek and join a guided tour of Marakoopa Cave, known for its glow worms and reflective pools. Stop for lunch in the riverside town of Deloraine, then drive about 45 minutes on to Launceston. Set up at a holiday park within walking distance of Cataract Gorge, a good place to do laundry and refill water before the last leg.

Day 12: Walk from your park into Cataract Gorge and cross the suspension bridge, or ride the chairlift over the First Basin. Spend the afternoon in Launceston's city centre, with its Victorian streetscapes, markets and cafes. Restock for the final two days and take an easy evening, as tomorrow's route follows the Tamar River north towards Bass Strait.

Days 13-14: Tamar Valley & Launceston Drop-off

+
−

Day 13: Follow the West Tamar Highway north through cool-climate wine country, with cellar doors along both banks of the river. Visit the Beaconsfield Mine and Heritage Centre, then cross the Batman Bridge to the east bank and continue to Low Head. Stay nearby and join a guided evening tour to watch little penguins waddle ashore at dusk.

Day 14: Drive back to Launceston, about an hour, and allow time to empty the waste tanks, refuel and tidy the van. Return it to the depot near Launceston Airport at Western Junction, then catch your flight home. Through us, LeisureRent offers the Hobart to Launceston one-way, so check availability and the one-way fee in your quote before you book.

East Coast Loop from Hobart (10 Days)

+

Day 1: Richmond & Orford

+
−

Day 1: Pick up your van at Cambridge and stock up at the nearby supermarkets, then drive about 20 minutes to Richmond to see its convict-built bridge and Georgian streets. Join the Tasman Highway at Sorell and head north-east through Buckland to Orford, about an hour away. Settle into a holiday park by the Prosser River and book tomorrow's Maria Island ferry if you have not already.

Days 2-3: Maria Island & Swansea

+
−

Day 2: Leave the van at Triabunna, a few minutes up the road, and take the passenger ferry to Maria Island, a national park with no private vehicles. Explore the convict ruins at Darlington, meet the wombats grazing on the lawns and walk to the Painted Cliffs, best at low tide. Pack lunch and water, as the island has no shops, then catch the afternoon boat back.

Day 3: Drive about 45 minutes north to Swansea, where Great Oyster Bay frames views of the Freycinet Peninsula. Stop at the convict-built Spiky Bridge and Kate's Berry Farm along the way. Continue to Coles Bay, roughly another 45 minutes, and check in for two nights at a holiday park, as Freycinet's Richardsons Beach sites go to a ballot in peak summer.

Day 4: Freycinet & Wineglass Bay

+
−

Day 4: Make an early start for the Wineglass Bay Lookout, about 2.6 km return and 1 to 1.5 hours, with your parks pass on display. Fit walkers can continue down to the beach for a swim in clear, cold water. Spend the afternoon at Honeymoon Bay, then stay on for sunset as the granite peaks of the Hazards glow pink above Coles Bay.

Days 5-6: Bicheno to the Bay of Fires

+
−

Day 5: Drive about 40 minutes to Bicheno to watch the blowhole spray across the granite and eat fresh seafood by the harbour. Book an evening tour to see little penguins return to their burrows, and stay at a Bicheno holiday park with powered sites and laundry. It is a good night to refill water and empty the tanks before the free campgrounds further north.

Day 6: Head north about an hour to St Helens to restock with fuel and groceries, then continue to Binalong Bay at the southern end of the Bay of Fires. Free Parks campgrounds such as Cosy Corner take campervans on a first come, first served basis, with pit toilets and no drinking water. Arrive by early afternoon in summer and carry everything you need.

Day 7: The Bay of Fires

+
−

Day 7: Take a slow day, with a morning swim in clear water and a walk among the orange lichen-covered boulders around The Gardens. Pack a picnic and explore the coves along the coast road, or detour inland to St Columba Falls near Pyengana. Leave no trace at camp and take all rubbish with you, ready for tomorrow's drive across the Midlands.

Days 8-9: The Midlands Heritage Towns

+
−

Day 8: Leave the coast at St Helens and climb inland through St Marys and the Fingal Valley to the Midland Highway, about 2.5 hours in total. Stop at Campbell Town to see the convict-built Red Bridge, then drive about 15 minutes south to Ross. Stay in or near the village, whose sandstone bridge dates from 1836 and is known for its carved stonework.

Day 9: Explore Ross in the morning, then follow the Midland Highway south to Oatlands, where the restored Callington Mill stands above the town. Continue to Hobart, about an hour from Oatlands, and spend the afternoon around Salamanca Place or Battery Point. Spend the last night at the Hobart Showground motorhome park in Glenorchy, which has a dump point for guests.

Day 10: Hobart & Drop-off

+
−

Day 10: Spend a relaxed morning on the waterfront, or at the Salamanca Market if it is a Saturday, using an open-air car park, as the multi-storey car parks have low height limits. Then cross the Tasman Bridge outside the weekday peaks, refuel, empty the tanks and return the van by early afternoon, as several airport depots close at 3pm or 3:30pm.

Hobart, Port Arthur & Bruny Island (7 Days)

+

Days 1-2: Tasman Peninsula & Port Arthur

+
−

Day 1: Collect your van near Hobart Airport, already on the right side of the river for the Tasman Peninsula, about 1.5 hours away. Stop for oysters at Dunalley, then walk out to the Tessellated Pavement, Tasman Arch and Devils Kitchen near Eaglehawk Neck. Check in at a holiday park near Port Arthur and get to know the van's heater and water system before dark.

Day 2: Spend the day at the Port Arthur Historic Site, where large vehicles have their own signposted car park and entry includes a short harbour cruise. Tickets are valid for two consecutive days, so there is no need to rush. Drive out to Remarkable Cave in the late afternoon, then return after dark for a lantern-lit ghost tour, which is booked separately.

Days 3-5: Hobart, kunanyi & Bruny Island

+
−

Day 3: Drive back to Hobart, about 1.5 hours, timing the Tasman Bridge for outside the weekday peaks. Spend the afternoon at Salamanca Place and Battery Point, using an open-air car park, as Argyle Street and Hobart Central car parks have 2 m and 2.2 m height limits. If the summit is clear, drive up kunanyi/Mount Wellington, then stay at the Hobart Showground.

Day 4: Head south about 35 minutes to Kettering and join the queue for the Bruny Island ferry, as tickets cover the next available sailing rather than a set time. The crossing takes about 20 minutes. Climb the stairs at The Neck lookout, taste local cheese and oysters on the way south, and stay at a holiday park in Adventure Bay, once your hire company has okayed the ferry.

Day 5: Join a wilderness cruise from Adventure Bay past sea cliffs, seal colonies and, in season, migrating whales, or walk the Fluted Cape track for coastal views. Many Bruny side roads, including the way to Cape Bruny Lighthouse, are gravel, which most hire agreements exclude, so stay on sealed roads. Catch an afternoon ferry back to Kettering and stay nearby or in Cygnet.

Days 6-7: Huon Valley & Return to Hobart

+
−

Day 6: Spend a slow day in the Huon Valley, tasting cider and apple products and browsing farm gate stalls around Cygnet, Huonville and Franklin. In the afternoon, drive on to Geeveston for riverside walks and cafes. Stay at a holiday park in Huonville or Cygnet, both within about 40 minutes of Hobart, for an easy final morning.

Day 7: Drive back through Hobart to the depots at Cambridge, about 50 minutes, crossing the Tasman Bridge after the morning peak. With time to spare, detour 20 minutes to Richmond for its convict-built bridge. Empty the waste tanks, refuel and tidy the van, then return it by early afternoon, as some depots ask you to arrive an hour before their 3:30pm close.

Essential Hobart Driving Tips

⛰️ Steep Streets & Low Car Parks

Inner suburbs such as Battery Point and West Hobart have steep, narrow streets that are tricky in a motorhome. The big multi-storey car parks have height limits of 2 m (Argyle Street) and 2.2 m (Hobart Central), so use open-air parking or catch a bus into town.

🌉 Tasman Bridge Timing

The airport depots sit at Cambridge on the eastern shore, so most trips into the city cross the Tasman Bridge. It queues in the weekday morning and afternoon peaks, and a single crash can stall traffic for an hour, so plan pick-ups, drop-offs and city days around it.

🏔️ kunanyi/Mount Wellington

Pinnacle Road to the 1,271 m summit is sealed but narrow and winding, shared with tour buses, and parking at the top is limited. The City of Hobart closes it in snow and ice, most often from April to September, so check the road status before you go.

First Time Hiring a Campervan in Hobart?

🕒 Early Depot Closing Times

Several depots beside Hobart Airport close at 3pm or 3:30pm, and some ask you to collect or return the van an hour before closing. Choose a morning or midday flight, or spend your first night near the airport and pick up the van the next morning.

⛴️ The Bruny Island Ferry Queue

The vehicle ferry leaves Kettering, about 35 minutes south of Hobart, and runs on a queue: tickets are for the next available sailing, not a set time. Expect waits in summer, check your hire terms allow the trip, and stay on sealed roads once you cross.

🦘 Wildlife at Dusk

Pademelons, wallabies, possums and Tasmanian devils feed by the roadside from dusk, even on Hobart's outskirts and the drives to Port Arthur and the Huon. Aim to reach camp before sunset, and if you must drive at night, slow down and watch the verges.

⚠️ Insurance & Excess

Basic cover comes with a damage excess that is often $5,000 or more. Excess reduction lowers it, but many packages exclude overhead, underbody and unsealed road damage, which matters on Bruny Island gravel and around low city car parks.

Hobart Campervan Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Answers to common questions about hiring a campervan in Hobart, from airport pick-up to Bruny Island, Port Arthur and the drive to Launceston.

How much does it cost to hire a campervan in Hobart?

In our 2027 searches for Hobart pick-ups, 2 berth campervans started from about $60 a day in July and cost $120 to $210 a day in January. 2 to 4 berth motorhomes ran about $145 to $320 a day, and 6 berth motorhomes about $205 to $330 off-peak and $405 in January. Rates exclude excess reduction, one-way fees and extras, so compare live quotes.

Can I pick up a campervan at Hobart Airport?

Not inside the terminal, but most depots are close by at Cambridge. Apollo, Britz, maui and Mighty share a branch on Long Street, about a 400 m walk from the terminal, open 9am to 3:30pm. Other brands are a 3 to 5 minute taxi ride away on Kennedy Drive and Hawksford Road, and Spaceships offers 24/7 contactless pick-up.

What is the minimum age to hire a campervan in Hobart?

Most brands we compare need drivers to be 21 or older, and some budget Mighty models accept drivers from 18. LeisureRent, a Tasmanian operator, hires to drivers aged 23 to 80. Age rules and any young driver fees vary by brand and vehicle, so check them before you book.

What driver's licence do I need to hire a campervan in Hobart?

A full, current car licence covers the campervans and motorhomes in our Hobart search, so you do not need a truck or bus licence. If your licence is not in English, bring an International Driving Permit or an accredited English translation as well as the original.

Can I hire a campervan in Hobart with a toilet and shower?

Yes. Many 2 berth campervans and most 4 to 6 berth motorhomes leaving Hobart have a toilet and shower, while budget sleeper vans usually do not. A bathroom is handy on cold nights and opens up council campsites that require self-contained vehicles. Use the search filters to show only vans with these features.

Can I hire a campervan in Hobart and drop it off in Launceston?

Yes, with some brands. LeisureRent, for example, lets you collect in Hobart and return to its depot near Launceston Airport. The direct drive takes about 2.5 hours, so many travellers take the long way via the East Coast or Cradle Mountain. Through us, LeisureRent offers this one-way, and one-way fees vary, so check your quote.

Can I take a hire campervan on the Bruny Island ferry?

Usually, but check your rental terms first, as some brands need approval for ferry travel. The ferry leaves Kettering, about 35 minutes south of Hobart, and runs on a queue, so tickets cover the next available sailing. A return for a vehicle under 6 m costs $58.60 to $67.30 in 2026-27, depending on the season.

Is winter or Dark Mofo a good time to hire a campervan in Hobart?

Yes, if you pack for the cold. Winter had the lowest rates in our searches, and Dark Mofo fills Hobart with art, music and the Winter Feast each June (2027 dates are not yet announced). Expect nights around 5°C, short days and Pinnacle Road closures in snow, so choose a van with heating and book a powered site.

Where can I camp with a campervan near Hobart?

Holiday parks beside the airport at Cambridge, such as BIG4 Hobart Airport Tourist Park and Barilla Holiday Park, suit first and last nights. Closer to the city, the Hobart Showground motorhome park at Glenorchy has powered sites and a dump point for guests, with stays capped at 10 days. Councils set their own free camping rules, so check signs before parking overnight.

Where can I park a campervan in Hobart's CBD?

Avoid the multi-storey car parks, as Argyle Street has a 2 m height limit and Hobart Central 2.2 m, too low for most campervans. Look for open-air car parks near the waterfront, arrive early, and skip Salamanca Place on Saturday market days. Easier still, leave the van at your holiday park and catch a bus or taxi into town.

Can I drive a campervan up kunanyi/Mount Wellington?

Yes, in good conditions. Pinnacle Road is sealed with no signposted length limit on the main route to the summit, but it is narrow and winding, shared with tour buses, and parking at the top is limited. The City of Hobart closes it in snow and ice, so check the road status first, or take the kunanyi/Mt Wellington Explorer Bus.

How far is Port Arthur from Hobart by campervan?

The Port Arthur Historic Site is about a 90-minute drive from Hobart via Sorell and the Arthur Highway, with a signposted car park for large vehicles. Entry includes a short harbour cruise and is valid for two consecutive days, so staying overnight nearby lets you add an evening ghost tour and Remarkable Cave.

What insurance options are available for campervan hire in Hobart?

Every hire includes basic cover with a damage excess, often $5,000 or more for a campervan and higher for some motorhomes. Excess reduction packages cut that liability, but many exclude overhead, underbody and unsealed road damage. Read the terms closely if you plan to visit Bruny Island or squeeze into tight city streets.

How many days do I need for a campervan trip from Hobart?

Seven days covers Hobart, the Tasman Peninsula and Bruny Island at an easy pace. Allow 10 days to loop the East Coast to Freycinet and the Bay of Fires, or 14 days to head west to Strahan and Cradle Mountain before finishing in Launceston. Some brands set a minimum hire, such as five days.

When should I book a campervan in Hobart?

For January, Easter and school holidays, book 4 to 6 months ahead, as Hobart's rental fleets are small and popular vans sell out. For winter and shoulder months, 6 to 8 weeks is often enough, and last-minute availability is sometimes better value. Compare live prices for your dates before you commit.

What are the best campervan road trips from Hobart?

Short trips include the Tasman Peninsula and Port Arthur, Bruny Island via the Kettering ferry, the Huon Valley and Mount Field National Park, all within about two hours of the city. With 10 days, loop the East Coast to Freycinet and the Bay of Fires. With two weeks, head west to Strahan and Cradle Mountain and finish in Launceston.
