- 4WD and the Gibb: 2WD campervans must stay off long unsealed roads. Britz 4WDs need permission for the Gibb River Road, so check each brand's rules and the Main Roads WA travel map before you go.

Shinju Matsuri
Venues across Broome and Cable Beach
The festival of the pearl runs 27 August to 12 September 2027, with the Chinatown Feast and a Cable Beach long table.
Quick Event Tips for Broome Travellers
- Check Staircase Dates: Staircase nights draw crowds to Town Beach, and Visit Broome publishes the 2027 dates and times, so book powered sites for those nights early.
- School Holidays: WA school holidays run 3 to 18 July and 25 September to 10 October 2027, so expect more demand for vans and powered sites in those weeks.
- Mind the Wet Season: From about November to April, heavy rain and cyclones can close Kimberley roads at short notice, so check the Main Roads Travel Map before each drive.
Holiday parks and attractions around Broome
Where to stay with the van in town and along the coast, and the Broome sights and trips worth planning a full day around.
Holiday parks where you can stay with your campervan

RAC Cable Beach Holiday Park
A short walk from Cable Beach and about seven minutes' drive from town, this park has powered caravan and camping sites set in tropical gardens. Facilities include a 19-metre saltwater pool, mini golf, a camp kitchen and BBQs, a general store, laundry, dump point and gas refills. From June to August all sites have a three-night minimum stay, arriving and leaving on a Monday or Friday.

Broome Caravan Park
Among large established trees on Wattle Drive, just off the Broome Highway at the entrance to town, this park is a few kilometres from Chinatown and Cable Beach. Powered sites come hard-standing or grassed with room for big rigs, and pets are welcome on all sites (up to two). There's a lagoon-style pool with a lap section, camp kitchen, BBQs, laundry, kiosk and dump point.

Djarindjin Campground
About 190 km north of Broome on the sealed Cape Leveque Road, this community-run campground on the Dampier Peninsula has easy 2WD access. There are 37 powered sites sized for caravans and large RVs, with hot showers, laundry, a camp kitchen and a sheltered BBQ area, and the roadhouse next door sells takeaway and basic supplies. Book an Aboriginal cultural tour at the campground office.

Eighty Mile Beach Caravan Park
About 3.5 hours south of Broome on the way to Port Hedland, this park sits beside a 220 km stretch of white sand where flatback turtles nest from October to March. Powered and unpowered sites share shady lawns, a laundry and ablution blocks, and a mini mart stocks basics, bait and ice, with takeaway meals from about May to September. The access road is unsealed, so check your rental terms.
Top attractions to build your trip around

Cable Beach
Ten minutes' drive from town, Cable Beach runs for 22 km of white sand beside the Indian Ocean. Its best-known sight is the camel trains at sunset, and operators including Red Sun Camels and Broome Camel Safaris run pre-sunset and sunset rides, so book ahead in the dry season. Walk the dune trails of Minyirr Park, then find a spot on the sand to watch the sun go down.

Gantheaume Point
A short drive south of Cable Beach, Gantheaume Point's red sandstone cliffs drop into the turquoise Indian Ocean. Dinosaur footprints more than 125 million years old are set in the reef rock but only show at low tide (Visit Broome lists tides below 2.16 m), with plaster casts at the top of the cliff for other times. Check tide times at the Broome Visitor Centre, then stay for sunset.

Town Beach and Roebuck Bay
On Broome's south-east edge, Town Beach looks over Roebuck Bay, a Ramsar-listed wetland popular for birdwatching. A $24 million upgrade added a new jetty and a water playground, and the foreshore is the main spot to watch Staircase to the Moon, with markets on selected Staircase nights. On very low tides you can walk the mudflats to the Catalina flying boat wrecks.

Dampier Peninsula
Cape Leveque Road runs about 200 km north from Broome through pindan woodland, and its last 90 km of dirt was sealed in 2020, giving all-weather access. Many of the peninsula's beaches and sights need a 4WD to reach, and some communities limit visitor access, so check with the Broome Visitor Centre and your rental terms first. Stops include Beagle Bay and Cygnet Bay Pearl Farm.

I recently booked a campervan through this company. It was my first time booking an RV and I had a lot of questions & fears going into booking a vehicle that was worth so much & really needed to understand how the process works. I called the company & was given detailed information on what to expect & was guided through the process. They even mentioned I could call back with any further questions to ensure I was happy & comfortable with my decision. I rented the vehicle for 14 days and drove from Brisbane to Jindabyne to go Skiing. I would definitely book through this company again.

Broome Campervan Hire Itineraries
Broome to Darwin via the Kimberley (21 Days)
Days 1-2: Broome & Cable Beach
Day 1: Collect your van in town, a short taxi ride from Broome Airport, allowing at least an hour before the depot's 3:30pm close for the handover. Stock up at one of Broome's shopping centres, then check in for two nights at a caravan park near Cable Beach. Walk down to the sand for sunset, when camel trains cross the beach and the Indian Ocean glows orange.
Day 2: Check the tide times, then drive to Gantheaume Point, where red pindan cliffs meet turquoise water and dinosaur footprints show in the reef on the lowest tides. Spend the afternoon in Chinatown among the pearl showrooms and cafes. If your dates line up between March and October, join the crowds at Town Beach for the Staircase to the Moon.
Days 3-4: Derby & King Sound
Day 3: Head east on the Broome Highway, refuelling at Roebuck Roadhouse, then turn north onto the Derby Highway near Willare, about 220 km in all. Stop at the hollow Boab Prison Tree just south of Derby, then walk out on the town jetty at sunset to watch King Sound's huge tides. Stay two nights at a caravan park in town.
Day 4: Visit the Mowanjum Art Centre, just outside town, to see work by Worrorra, Ngarinyin and Wunambal artists, or book a scenic flight over the Horizontal Falls. Derby is also the western end of the Gibb River Road, which is mostly unsealed and off limits to 2WD hire vans, so this trip heads back to the sealed Great Northern Highway.
Days 5-6: Fitzroy Crossing & Danggu Gorge
Day 5: Drive about 260 km to Fitzroy Crossing, rejoining the Great Northern Highway through flat cattle country dotted with boab trees. Check in for two nights at a caravan park in town and top up your fuel, water and groceries. Spend a quiet evening near the Fitzroy River, keeping well back from the banks, as crocodiles live in the river.
Day 6: Drive 20 km on a sealed road to Danggu Geikie Gorge National Park and take the boat tour, which runs from May to October, beneath limestone walls banded by floodwaters. The park is day use only, so return to Fitzroy Crossing for the night. Fill up before bed, as the next fuel is at Halls Creek, nearly 300 km away.
Days 7-8: Halls Creek & Warmun
Day 7: Leave early for the long run to Halls Creek, about 290 km with no fuel on the way, so carry extra water and rest in the heat of the day. Pull well over for oncoming road trains, which can stretch past 50 m. Settle into a caravan park in Halls Creek, restock at the supermarket and stretch your legs around town.
Day 8: Continue about 160 km north to Warmun, passing the turn-off to Purnululu National Park. The Spring Creek Track into the park is about 53 km of rough, high-clearance 4WD track, so it is off limits in a 2WD hire van. Stay at the Warmun Roadhouse and book tomorrow's Bungle Bungle scenic flight.
Days 9-10: Bungle Bungles by Air & Kununurra
Day 9: Take a helicopter flight over the striped beehive domes of the Bungle Bungle Range in World Heritage-listed Purnululu, with flights from Warmun in the dry season. Longer packages can include landings and guided walks, so compare options when you book. Spend the afternoon at the Warmun Art Centre, which shows work by Gija artists.
Day 10: Drive about 195 km to Kununurra, turning onto the Victoria Highway for the last 43 km into town, the hub of the Ord River irrigation area. Set up for three nights at a caravan park near Lily Creek Lagoon, restock and do the laundry. Walk the short trails in Mirima National Park at sunset, when the sandstone glows red.
Days 11-12: Kununurra & Wyndham
Day 11: Join a cruise on the Ord River between the Lake Argyle dam and Kununurra for gorge scenery, birdlife and freshwater crocodiles sunning on the banks. In the afternoon, visit the farm gates and markets for local mangoes, melons and sandalwood products. Restock with fuel and groceries, as Kununurra is the last big town before Katherine.
Day 12: Drive about 100 km to Wyndham to see the Big Croc and the Five Rivers Lookout on the Bastion, where five rivers meet in the Cambridge Gulf. The lookout road is sealed but steep and winding, and not suited to caravans, so larger motorhomes may prefer to skip the climb. Return to Kununurra for the night.
Days 13-14: Lake Argyle
Day 13: Drive about 70 km to Lake Argyle, the vast reservoir formed by the Ord River Dam, and stay two nights at the resort's caravan park. Swim in its infinity pool overlooking the ranges, then take a sunset cruise on the lake to look for freshwater crocodiles, rock wallabies and waterbirds.
Day 14: Take a slow morning by the pool, or book a scenic flight over the lake and its islands. Walk out to the dam wall lookouts and visit the Durack Homestead Museum, rebuilt here before the valley flooded. Pack up early tonight, as tomorrow you rejoin the Victoria Highway and cross into the Northern Territory.
Days 15-16: Into the NT & Victoria River
Day 15: Head east on the Victoria Highway past the Quarantine WA checkpoint at the border, where vehicles entering WA are inspected, and set your clocks forward 90 minutes. Keep River National Park sits just inside the NT, but its roads are unsealed, so check your hire terms. Drive on to Timber Creek, about 225 km from Kununurra, and stay near the Victoria River.
Day 16: Stop at the Victoria River Roadhouse, about 90 km east, for the short Escarpment Walk in Judbarra/Gregory National Park, with wide views over the river valley. Continue about 195 km to Katherine on the sealed highway, watching for cattle and road trains. Stay three nights at a caravan park near the hot springs or out at Nitmiluk.
Days 17-18: Katherine & Nitmiluk
Day 17: Drive about 30 km to Nitmiluk National Park and cruise the Katherine River gorges, or hire a canoe and paddle between the sandstone walls. Walk to the Baruwei Lookout in the cool of the morning, carrying plenty of water. Swim only where rangers have opened areas after crocodile surveys, and follow the signs.
Day 18: Head about 60 km north to Leliyn (Edith Falls) for a swim in the plunge pool, if it is open after the wet, and a walk to the upper pools. Back in Katherine, soak in the Katherine Hot Springs, then restock with fuel, water and groceries for Litchfield, as shops thin out north of town.
Days 19-21: Litchfield & Darwin
Day 19: Follow the Stuart Highway north through Pine Creek and Adelaide River, then turn off at Batchelor for Litchfield National Park, about 300 km from Katherine. Set up at a campground in the park or a caravan park in Batchelor. Stop at the magnetic termite mounds in the late afternoon, when the light is softer.
Day 20: Spend the day between Florence Falls, Buley Rockhole and Wangi Falls on the sealed main park road. Swim only where signs say it is open, as Wangi can stay closed into the dry season while rangers check for crocodiles. Skip the 4WD tracks, such as the road to the Lost City, which 2WD hire terms ban.
Day 21: Drive about 120 km to Darwin, then refuel, empty the waste tanks and tidy the van before your drop-off, allowing time before the depot closes. Not every brand offers a Broome to Darwin one-way hire, and fees can be high, so check one-way availability and the fees in your quote before you book.
Broome to Perth via Karijini & Ningaloo (14 Days)
Day 1: Broome to Eighty Mile Beach
Day 1: Collect your van, stock up in Broome and refuel at Roebuck Roadhouse, then head south on the Great Northern Highway, about 375 km in all. Turn off for Eighty Mile Beach Caravan Park, where the last 10 km or so is gravel, so check your hire terms allow it. Walk over the dunes for sunset on a beach that seems to go on forever.
Days 2-3: Port Hedland & Karijini
Day 2: Take a morning beach walk, then drive about 240 km to Port Hedland, refuelling at Pardoo Roadhouse on the way. Watch giant iron ore ships move through the harbour and see the white salt stockpiles on the edge of town. Stay at a caravan park and stock up on fuel, water and groceries for the national park.
Day 3: Head south about 260 km to Auski Roadhouse at Munjina, then into Karijini National Park on sealed roads to the visitor centre and Dales Gorge. Buy a park pass, book your site at Dales campground ahead, and carry plenty of water, as Karijini is remote and hot by day.
Day 4: Dales Gorge
Day 4: Walk down to Fortescue Falls and on to Fern Pool for a swim, then follow the gorge floor to Circular Pool, finishing on the rim trail for views over the red walls. Start early to beat the heat, wear sturdy shoes and check park alerts first. Some gorge roads further west are unsealed, which 2WD hire terms may not allow.
Days 5-6: Tom Price to Exmouth
Day 5: Drive west on Karijini Drive to Tom Price and restock, then continue through Paraburdoo and west on the sealed Nanutarra-Munjina Road to Nanutarra Roadhouse, a long day of roughly 480 km. Avoid the unsealed shortcuts and the Rio Tinto rail access road. Stay at the roadhouse beside the Ashburton River.
Day 6: Continue south, then turn onto Burkett Road towards the North West Cape, roughly 300 km to Exmouth. Watch for emus, kangaroos and wandering cattle, and avoid driving at dawn or dusk. Check in for three nights at a caravan park in Exmouth, then catch the sunset from the Vlamingh Head Lighthouse.
Day 7: Cape Range & Ningaloo Reef
Day 7: Drive into Cape Range National Park with a park pass and snorkel the drift at Turquoise Bay, where coral starts just off the sand. Check the current and stay inside the marked area. Continue to the end of the sealed road at Yardie Creek for a gorge walk, stopping at the Milyering Discovery Centre on the way back.
Days 8-9: Exmouth & Coral Bay
Day 8: Book a reef tour from Exmouth: whale shark swims run roughly from March to July, and humpback whales pass from about June to November. Or spend a slower day at the marina and town beaches. Restock at the supermarket and empty the waste tanks before heading south tomorrow.
Day 9: Drive about 150 km south to Coral Bay, a tiny settlement where Ningaloo Reef starts a few steps from the beach at Bills Bay. Snorkel the sheltered lagoon, keeping to the rules of the sanctuary zones, and book your caravan park site well ahead, as Coral Bay's parks fill quickly in the dry season.
Day 10: Carnarvon
Day 10: Drive about 230 km south to Carnarvon, joining the North West Coastal Highway at Minilya Roadhouse. Visit the Carnarvon Space and Technology Museum, then buy bananas, mangoes and other fresh produce from the plantation stalls along the Gascoyne River. Stay at a caravan park in town and refuel for tomorrow.
Day 11: Shark Bay
Day 11: Head south about 200 km to the Overlander Roadhouse, then west into the Shark Bay World Heritage Area. Stop at Hamelin Pool to see the stromatolites, then at Shell Beach, made of countless tiny cockle shells. Continue to Monkey Mia and stay at the resort's caravan sites, close to the morning dolphin visits.
Days 12-13: Monkey Mia & Kalbarri
Day 12: Watch the dolphins swim into the shallows at Monkey Mia in the morning, when rangers run the feeding sessions. Then drive back to the highway and south to Kalbarri, about 400 km, crossing the Murchison River on the way. Check in at a caravan park near the river mouth.
Day 13: Visit Kalbarri National Park early for Nature's Window and the Kalbarri Skywalk, which juts out over the Murchison River gorge. Then follow the coast south past the pink Hutt Lagoon at Port Gregory and through Geraldton to Dongara, about 230 km. Stay at a beachside caravan park in Dongara or Port Denison.
Day 14: The Pinnacles & Perth
Day 14: Take Indian Ocean Drive south to Cervantes and walk among the limestone spires of the Pinnacles Desert in Nambung National Park. Continue to Perth, about 360 km in all, then refuel and empty the tanks before your drop-off. Check one-way availability from Broome to Perth and the fees in your quote before you book.
Broome, Dampier Peninsula & Derby (7 Days)
Days 1-2: Broome & Cable Beach
Day 1: Pick up your van in town, a short taxi ride from Broome Airport, and stock up at one of the shopping centres before checking in at a caravan park near Cable Beach. Spend the late afternoon on the sand as the camel trains head out at sunset, and swim between the flags if lifeguards are on patrol.
Day 2: Visit Gantheaume Point at low tide for the red cliffs and, on the lowest tides, dinosaur footprints in the reef. Wander Chinatown's pearl showrooms and catch a film at Sun Pictures, an open-air cinema that dates from 1916. Then buy fuel, water and groceries for the Dampier Peninsula, where shops are few.
Days 3-5: The Dampier Peninsula
Day 3: Drive north on the Cape Leveque Road, sealed since 2020, about 200 km and two hours to Cygnet Bay Pearl Farm. Book a 2WD-accessible site, as some of the farm's camp areas need a 4WD, and join a pearl farm tour. Camp well back from the water's edge, as crocodiles can turn up anywhere along this coast.
Day 4: Visit the trochus hatchery at Ardyaloon (One Arm Point), reached on a sealed road, and look out over the islands and racing tides of King Sound. This is Bardi Jawi country, so follow community rules, as some areas need permission to enter. Return to Cygnet Bay for a swim in the pool or a sunset tour on the water.
Day 5: Head back south, stopping at Beagle Bay to see the Sacred Heart Church and its mother-of-pearl altar, where an entry fee may apply. Continue to Broome, about 200 km from Cygnet Bay, and refuel on the way in. Spend the night at a caravan park in town, close to Town Beach for the Staircase to the Moon if the dates line up.
Days 6-7: Derby & Return to Broome
Day 6: Drive about 220 km to Derby on sealed highways, stopping at the hollow Boab Prison Tree just south of town. Walk the jetty at sunset, when King Sound's tides are among the biggest in Australia, and visit the Mowanjum Art Centre if you arrive during opening hours. Stay at a caravan park in Derby.
Day 7: Drive back to Broome in the morning, about 2.5 hours, so you can return the van at least an hour before the depot's 3:30pm close. Refuel, empty the waste tanks and tidy up first. With time before your flight, Chinatown and Town Beach are a short taxi ride from Broome Airport.
Essential Broome Driving Tips
🌊 Huge Tides & Beach Driving
Broome's spring tides rise more than 9 m, flooding Roebuck Bay's flats and the beaches fast, and vehicles have been lost to the sea. Many hire agreements ban beach driving, and the Cable Beach ramp north of the rocks has been closed for redevelopment, so park off the sand and check tide times.
🚛 Road Trains
Road trains up to 53.5 m long carry cattle, fuel and ore on the Great Northern Highway. Give them plenty of room, slow down and move left when one approaches on a narrow section, and only overtake on a long, clear straight. A UHF radio, if your van has one, lets you talk to drivers.
⛽ Fuel & Distances
Towns are hundreds of kilometres apart in the Kimberley and Pilbara. The longest gap on the way to Darwin is about 290 km, between Fitzroy Crossing and Halls Creek, so fill up at every town, carry spare drinking water and reach camp before dusk, when cattle and kangaroos wander onto the road.
First Time Hiring a Campervan in Broome?
🌧️ Wet Season Depot Closures
The depot shared by Britz, Apollo, maui and Mighty takes no pick-ups from 1 December 2026 to 21 March 2027, and Adventure Rentals closes from 1 December to 31 March. From about November to April, rain and floods also close the Gibb River Road, Purnululu and some highways, so plan Kimberley trips for the dry season.
🐊 Crocodiles & Stingers
Saltwater crocodiles live along the Kimberley coast and in its rivers and pools, so swim only where signs say it is safe and camp at least 50 m from the water's edge. Box jellyfish and Irukandji are a risk in Broome's waters from about November to April, so wear a stinger suit or stay dry.
🍎 WA/NT Border Quarantine
Quarantine WA runs a 24-hour checkpoint on the Victoria Highway near the border, about 40 km east of Kununurra. Heading into WA from the NT, you must declare and bin fresh fruit, vegetables, honey and plants. Clocks change by 90 minutes at the border, so allow for it with depot times.
🏕️ No Free Camping in Broome
The Shire of Broome bans camping outside caravan parks and designated camping grounds, including sleeping in a vehicle, and rangers can issue on-the-spot fines. Book a caravan park in town, and from May to September reserve well ahead, as Broome's parks fill up in the peak dry season.
Broome Campervan Seasonal Travel Guide
Broome has two seasons that shape a campervan trip: the dry, from about May to October, and the wet, from about November to April. From May to October, Broome averages under 30 mm of rain a month and clear, warm days, while January and February bring about 180 to 200 mm of rain each, high humidity and closed hire depots.
Broome Hire Quick Tips
- Book Early: May to September is peak season, so book your van and caravan parks months ahead, especially for school holidays.
- Beat the Heat: Carry plenty of drinking water, refill at every town and walk gorges early, as dry-season days still reach 30°C or more.
- Check the Roads: Check Main Roads WA and the NT Road Report before each long leg, as floods and fires can close highways.
Broome Campervan Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Answers to common questions about hiring a campervan in Broome, from wet season depot closures and the Staircase to the Moon to the Gibb River Road and one-way trips to Darwin and Perth.
How much does it cost to hire a campervan in Broome?
Campervan Rental Guide searches for 14-day Broome hires in May and July 2027 found vans from about $89 a day. 2 berth campervans ran about $130 to $325 a day in May and $160 to $300 in July, 2 to 4 berth motorhomes with a toilet and shower $160 to $280, and 5 to 6 berth motorhomes $210 to $345. Britz adds a one-off Broome location fee of $900 ($930 from 1 April 2027). Rates exclude excess reduction, one-way fees and extras.
When is the best time to hire a campervan in Broome?
The dry season, from about May to October, is the best time. Broome averages under 30 mm of rain a month from April to November, days are warm and clear, and the main Kimberley roads and parks are open. It is also the busiest time, so book your van and caravan parks early, especially for the July and September school holidays.
Can I hire a campervan in Broome in the wet season?
Options are limited. The depot shared by Britz, Apollo, maui and Mighty takes no pick-ups from 1 December 2026 to 21 March 2027, and Adventure Rentals closes from 1 December to 31 March. The wet, from about November to April, brings heavy rain, high humidity, possible cyclones and flooded roads, and the Gibb River Road and Purnululu close. Check live availability and road conditions first.
When can I see the Staircase to the Moon in Broome?
The Staircase to the Moon appears over Roebuck Bay on two or three evenings a month from March to October, when the rising full moon reflects off the tidal flats at low tide. In 2027 the dates run from 23 to 25 March through to 16 to 18 October. Town Beach is the main viewing spot, so arrive at least an hour before moonrise.
Can I drive the Gibb River Road in a hire campervan?
Only in a 4WD camper whose rental terms allow it. The Gibb River Road runs from Derby to the Great Northern Highway between Wyndham and Kununurra and is mostly unsealed, with river crossings and corrugations. 2WD campervans are not allowed on it, and some brands need written permission for 4WDs too. It closes in the wet, so check Main Roads WA before you go.
Is the road to Cape Leveque sealed?
Yes. The Broome-Cape Leveque Road was sealed in 2020, so the drive of about 200 km up the Dampier Peninsula suits 2WD vans. Some access roads to beaches and camps are still sand or gravel, so check your hire terms. Kooljaman at Cape Leveque closed in 2021, so confirm its status, or book a 2WD site at Cygnet Bay Pearl Farm.
Can I hire a campervan in Broome and drop it off in Darwin or Perth?
Yes, with some brands, but check one-way availability for your dates. Fees can be high: Britz, for example, charges a $900 Broome location fee plus a $300 one-way fee for pick-ups up to 31 March 2027, rising to $930 and $310 from 1 April 2027. The drive is about 1,870 km to Darwin and 2,200 km or more to Perth.
How many days do I need for a campervan trip from Broome?
Seven days covers Broome, Cable Beach, the Dampier Peninsula and Derby at an easy pace. Allow at least 14 days for a one-way trip to Perth via Karijini and Ningaloo, and about 21 days to drive to Darwin via Fitzroy Crossing, Kununurra and Katherine. Distances are huge, so plan rest days between the long drives.
What driver's licence do I need to hire a campervan in Broome?
Most campervans and motorhomes for hire in Broome only need a full, current car licence, so you do not need a truck licence. If your licence is not in English, bring an International Driving Permit or an accredited English translation as well as the original. Check your brand's terms for any rules on provisional or overseas licences.
What is the minimum age to hire a campervan in Broome?
Most brands need drivers to be 21 or older, and some accept younger drivers with extra fees or a limited choice of vehicles. Age limits and young driver fees vary by brand and vehicle, and can be stricter for 4WD campers, so check the terms in your quote before you book.
What insurance options are available for campervan hire in Broome?
Every hire includes basic cover with a damage excess. Britz, for example, makes you liable for up to $7,500 per incident on a 2WD for travel from April 2027. Excess reduction lowers that, but many packages still exclude overhead, underbody, windscreen and tyre damage, and driving on restricted roads can void your cover, which matters on Kimberley gravel.
Can I free camp in Broome?
No. The Shire of Broome says there is no free camping in the shire, and that includes sleeping in a vehicle. You can camp only in licensed caravan parks, designated camping grounds or on private property with the owner's permission, and rangers can issue on-the-spot fines. Outside the shire, use signed rest areas and follow local signs.
Do I need to book caravan parks in Broome?
Yes, from May to September, and especially in school holidays. The Shire counts seven licensed caravan parks in the Broome townsite, and when they fill it can open temporary overflow parks with stays capped at seven days. Book your sites when you book your van, or call the Broome Visitor Centre on (08) 9195 2200 for help.
Is it safe to swim in Broome and the Kimberley?
Take care. Saltwater crocodiles live along the Kimberley coast and in its rivers and pools, so swim only where signs say it is safe and camp at least 50 m from the water's edge. Cable Beach has had crocodile sightings, and box jellyfish are a risk from about November to April. Swim between the flags when lifeguards are on patrol.
How far apart are fuel stops when driving from Broome?
Gaps are long. On the way to Darwin, the biggest is about 290 km between Fitzroy Crossing and Halls Creek, and heading south to Port Hedland there is little between Roebuck Roadhouse and Sandfire. Fill up at every town, carry extra water and check roadhouse hours, as remote stops can close early or run short of fuel.
What can I take across the WA/NT border in a campervan?
Heading east to Darwin, you pass the Quarantine WA checkpoint about 40 km east of Kununurra, but its checks apply to vehicles entering WA. Coming back west, you must declare and bin fresh fruit, vegetables, honey, plants and soil at the 24-hour checkpoint. The NT has its own fruit fly zones, so check the Interstate Quarantine rules before you travel.
