Burning Man 2027 runs from 29 August to 6 September in the Black Rock Desert, about 2 hours north of Reno, and every vehicle needs a vehicle pass (US$165 in 2026). In our live search for 25 August to 9 September 2027, Travellers Autobarn campervans start from about US$113 a day before its US$1,000 Burning Man fee, and Cruise America motorhomes from about US$266 a night in Las Vegas. Pick up in San Francisco, Las Vegas, Los Angeles or Salt Lake City, declare Burning Man when you book, and plan for no hookups or dump station on the playa.

Which rental brands allow Burning Man?

Four brands we compare accept Burning Man trips, each with its own fee and cleaning rules: Travellers Autobarn campervans, and Cruise America, El Monte RV and Road Bear RV motorhomes. Travellers Autobarn and Cruise America show live prices for late August 2027, and our team can check El Monte RV and Road Bear RV for you.

  • Live totals up-front: compare real Travellers Autobarn and Cruise America prices for your dates, with no booking fees.
  • Declare your trip: Travellers Autobarn charges US$1,500 and may void insurance if Burning Man is not declared, so always say so at booking.
  • Human help: talk to our team about the right vehicle for your trip.

What does Burning Man RV and campervan hire cost?

Rates in US$ from our live Las Vegas, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Salt Lake City searches for a 15 night hire, picking up Wednesday 25 August and returning Thursday 9 September 2027. Travellers Autobarn quotes per rental day and Cruise America per night. They leave out the Burning Man fee, Cruise America's mileage and generator charges, kits, one-way fees and extras, so compare live totals for your dates.

BUDGET

Travellers Autobarn campervan

US$113 to US$170/day

Off-peak. From about $100 in January. No shower or toilet.

Most popular

MID-RANGE

Cruise America 21 ft Compact or 25 ft Standard

Most popular for couples heading north. Bathroom options available.

FAMILY

Cruise America 30 ft Large motorhome

US$387 to US$873/day

Shower, toilet and full kitchen. Book early for school holidays.

The Burning Man fee changes the total: Travellers Autobarn adds a non-refundable US$1,000 Burning Man Supplementary Fee and charges US$1,500 if you go without declaring the trip. Cruise America publishes no Burning Man fee, can raise your deposit above its usual US$500 minimum, and charges up to US$250 if the interior is not cleaned, so confirm its terms in writing before you book.

Where to collect your RV or campervan for Burning Man

There is no rental depot at Black Rock City, so you collect in a gateway city and drive in. Depots are listed by road distance to Gerlach, the last town before the gate, starting with San Francisco's East Bay, the shortest drive. Cruise America's Reno dealer is closer still but returned no vans in our search for these dates.

Getting to Your Burning Man Pick-up

  • Distances: miles are road distances to Gerlach, and the gate is about 10 miles (16 km) beyond. There is no fuel inside Burning Man, so fill up before the gate.
  • Pick-up and return times: Travellers Autobarn hands over from 10:00am to 4:00pm and takes returns from 9:00am to 3:00pm. Cruise America hands over from 1:00pm to 4:00pm and wants RVs back from 9:00am to 11:00am.
  • Sundays and holidays: both brands close on Sundays and holidays, and Labor Day is Monday 6 September 2027, so plan your return for a day the depot is open.
  • Reno and Sacramento: Cruise America has a dealer in Sparks near Reno, but it returned no vans in our search for 25 August to 9 September 2027. Sacramento is not a pick-up option in our search.

Depot details checked October 2026. Hours change with the seasons and over public holidays; your booking confirmation is the final word.

The burns and Exodus

Black Rock City

The Man burns on the Saturday night before Labor Day and the Temple on Sunday evening. The event ends at 6 pm Monday 6 September, and Exodus runs into Tuesday.

Quick Burning Man Planning Tips

  • Book the RV Early: Burning Man's RV guide says rentals sell out quickly, so check availability for late August as soon as your dates are set.
  • Check the Contract: The Survival Guide warns some rental contracts prohibit Burning Man use, so confirm each brand's terms, fees and cleaning charges first.
  • Plan a Reno Stop: Waits at the Gate can pass five hours in the first 36 hours, so use a day in Reno to shop, fuel up and arrive mid-week.

On the road to Black Rock City

Most Burning Man trips run through Reno, then about 112 miles (180 km) north to the playa by the official Wadsworth route. These are the natural stops and supply towns worth a night or a detour on the way in or out.

Natural stops on the way to the playa

Pyramid Lake

Pyramid Lake lies about 35 miles (56 km) north of Reno on Highway 445, on Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe land. Day-use permits are required (US$25 at last check) and only the public beaches along Highway 446 are open to visitors.

Lake Tahoe and Emerald Bay

Lake Tahoe is 22 miles (35 km) long, up to 1,645 feet (501 m) deep and sits at 6,225 feet (1,897 m) in the Sierra Nevada. Emerald Bay on the south-west shore is the classic viewpoint and suits a detour on the San Francisco side of the trip.

Fly Geyser and Fly Ranch

Fly Geyser is about 20 miles (32 km) north of Gerlach on State Route 34, on Fly Ranch, a 3,800 acre property owned by Burning Man Project. It is private land, so visits are by guided walk or arrangement; check the current schedule before you go.

Black Rock Desert and High Rock Canyon

The BLM manages about 800,000 acres here, including the Black Rock Desert playa of roughly 200 square miles (520 sq km). Services are minimal, there is no mobile signal and the BLM advises high-clearance vehicles off sealed roads, so check your rental agreement before leaving the highway.

Towns to stock up in

The Truckee River flowing through downtown Reno beneath a footbridge, with hotel and office buildings on both banks

Reno

Reno is the last big shop before the playa, about 112 miles (180 km) from Black Rock City by Burning Man's Wadsworth route. Stock up on food, water and fuel here, and stretch your legs on the Truckee River Walk through downtown.

Interstate 80 and US 95 Alternate road signs beside the highway near Fernley, Nevada, with desert hills behind

Fernley

Fernley is where US 95 Alternate meets Interstate 80, so it is a natural fuel and supplies stop for drivers coming up from Fallon and southern Nevada. The Wadsworth exit for Gerlach is about 5 miles (8 km) back west along I-80.

The Welcome to Gerlach sign beside Nevada Route 447 at the edge of the small desert town

Gerlach

Gerlach is the last permanent town, 8 miles (13 km) from the Black Rock City entrance. Burning Man's guide lists two gas stations, a market, potable water sales and a restaurant, so be patient with queues and leave private taps alone.

Downtown Truckee main street with brick buildings and forested Sierra hills behind

Truckee

Truckee is a historic Sierra Nevada railroad town on I-80, roughly 35 miles (56 km) west of Reno. It makes a sensible overnight on the San Francisco run, with Lake Tahoe's north shore a short drive south.

I recently booked a campervan through this company. It was my first time booking an RV and I had a lot of questions & fears going into booking a vehicle that was worth so much & really needed to understand how the process works. I called the company & was given detailed information on what to expect & was guided through the process. They even mentioned I could call back with any further questions to ensure I was happy & comfortable with my decision. I rented the vehicle for 14 days and drove from Brisbane to Jindabyne to go Skiing. I would definitely book through this company again.

Burning Man RV Trip Itineraries

Read our Burning Man campervan survival guide →

San Francisco to Burning Man and Back (14 Days)

+

Days 1-2: San Francisco to Truckee & Lake Tahoe

+
−

Day 1: Collect your RV in the Bay Area on Friday 27 August and run Burning Man's pre-playa tank test before you leave the depot: fill the fresh tank, run the sink for a minute and flush the toilet a few times, checking for leaks. Then take I-80 east about 187 miles (300 km), roughly 3.7 hours in a car and longer in an RV over the Sierra, and camp near Truckee.

Day 2: Spend a slow day around Donner Lake and the Truckee River, then drive to the Lake Tahoe shore at Tahoe City for a swim and a lakeside walk. Top up your fresh water tank and buy spare jugs, as water is the one thing you cannot be short of on the playa, where Burning Man advises 1.5 gallons (5.7 litres) per person per day.

Days 3-4: Reno Stock-Up

+
−

Day 3: Drive 32 miles (52 km) to Reno, about 45 minutes. The Gate opens at 12:01 am on the first Sunday and waits in the first 36 hours can pass five hours, so use today to shop for food, ice and water. Stay at an RV park in the Reno or Sparks area and check that your rental agreement covers Burning Man.

Day 4: Fill the fuel tank, because the Survival Guide says to carry enough to reach Black Rock City and get back to Reno, Fernley or Lovelock, generator fuel included. Close slide-outs, secure loose items and check lights, tyres and fluids. Fill the fresh water tank, then rest, as tomorrow starts early.

Days 5-6: Reno to Black Rock City

+
−

Day 5: Leave Reno early on Tuesday 31 August, as Highway 447 is busiest from 11 am to midnight. It is 106 miles (171 km) to Gerlach, about 2 hours, then Gate Road at 10 mph (16 km/h). Display your vehicle pass in the windshield, expect a search at the Gate, and collect your city map from the Greeters.

Day 6: Park the RV along the edge of your camp, not on a main street, so it also shields tents from wind. A vehicle pass does not allow driving in the city, so the RV stays put until you leave. Run the generator at least one hour a day to keep the battery healthy, and keep a five-gallon bucket handy for leaks.

Days 7-8: A Week in the City

+
−

Day 7: Buy your pump-out voucher at the Fire & Services sanitation office before you flag down a truck. RV trucks run from 9 am to 9 pm, and their hoses reach only 30 feet (9 m), so leave a clear path. Save water by using the RV shower every other day and baby wipes in between.

Day 8: Daytime highs routinely pass 100°F (38°C) and overnight lows fall into the 40s°F (about 4 to 9°C), so pack for both. If a whiteout hits, stop where you are, turn your back to the wind and cover your face until it passes. Winds can top 75 mph (121 km/h) in an instant.

Days 9-10: The Man & the Temple

+
−

Day 9: Saturday 4 September is the expected night for the Man burn, as Burning Man says the Man burns on the Saturday night before Labor Day, weather permitting. Head out on foot or bike before dark with a headlamp and warm layers, and leave the RV parked at camp.

Day 10: The Temple burns on the Sunday evening, around 8 pm in 2026. It closed to visitors at sunrise that day, so visit earlier in the week. Start packing tonight and book a pump-out now, before the queues build on Monday, because pumping demand is high and waits can stretch to the next day.

Days 11-12: Exodus & Reno

+
−

Day 11: The event ends at 6 pm on Monday 6 September. Walk your camp shoulder to shoulder in a grid and pick up everything, even cigarette butts and bottle caps. Most people leave on Sunday and Monday, so queues on Gate Road were six to nine hours at their peak in past years, with Reno a few hours beyond that.

Day 12: Leave very early, late in the evening or on Tuesday morning before noon, as the Survival Guide suggests. Empty your tanks at a listed dump station, such as Love's in Fernley (825 Commerce Center Dr) or Golden Gate Petroleum in Sparks (1055 S Rock Blvd), both open 24 hours, then rest in Reno.

Days 13-14: Reno to San Francisco

+
−

Day 13: Clean the RV inside and out. Burning Man warns that rented RVs need a thorough clean, engine bay included, or you risk extra fees, and it advises blowing dust out of the air filter area. Take a quiet day around Reno and Sparks to sort laundry, shower and repack.

Day 14: Drive I-80 west about 218 miles (351 km), roughly 4.3 hours, over Donner Summit to the Bay Area and return the RV at its depot. Allow time for the return inspection and refuel the tank to the level your agreement requires. Check the depot's return hours before you leave Reno.

Las Vegas to Burning Man and Back (14 Days)

+

Day 1: Las Vegas to Tonopah

+
−

Day 1: Collect your RV on Saturday 28 August, run Burning Man's pre-playa tank test and stock up on water and food before you leave town. Drive US-95 north about 211 miles (340 km), roughly 4 hours, across the Nevada desert to Tonopah and stay overnight. Late August afternoons are hot, so check the air conditioning before you leave the depot.

Days 2-3: Tonopah to Reno

+
−

Day 2: Continue north on US-95 about 103 miles (166 km), roughly 2 hours, to Hawthorne and stop at Walker Lake for the view. Fill up with fuel in Hawthorne, as towns are far apart on this road. Camp near Hawthorne, or press on if you want a shorter drive tomorrow.

Day 3: Drive the last 128 miles (206 km), about 2.7 hours, into Reno, with a detour to Virginia City, the old silver mining town 26 miles (41 km) from Reno, if time allows. Book an RV park in the Reno or Sparks area for the next two nights and ring ahead for late arrival.

Day 4: Reno Provisioning

+
−

Day 4: Shop for food, ice and 1.5 gallons (5.7 litres) of water per person per day, then fill the fuel tank. The Survival Guide says to carry enough fuel to reach Black Rock City and get back to Reno, Fernley or Lovelock, generator fuel included. Close slide-outs, secure loads and check your lights.

Days 5-6: Reno to Black Rock City

+
−

Day 5: Leave Reno early on Wednesday 1 September, as Highway 447 is busiest from 11 am to midnight. It is 106 miles (171 km) to Gerlach, about 2 hours, then Gate Road at 10 mph (16 km/h). Waits are usually shortest from about 3 am to 10 am, and arriving Tuesday or later generally means shorter queues.

Day 6: Park the RV along the edge of camp, not on a main street. Your vehicle pass does not allow driving in the city, so the RV stays parked until you leave. Run the generator for at least an hour a day to keep the battery charged, and check the grey tank, as running water fills it quickly.

Day 7: Camp Life

+
−

Day 7: Buy a pump-out voucher at the Fire & Services sanitation office and book service early, as demand is high. Trucks run from 9 am to 9 pm and hoses reach only 30 feet (9 m). Use the RV shower every other day to save space in the tanks, and keep a bucket under the tank connections during any service.

Days 8-9: The Man & the Temple

+
−

Day 8: Saturday 4 September is the expected Man burn night, as Burning Man says the Man burns on the Saturday night before Labor Day, weather permitting. Walk or cycle out before dark with a headlamp and warm layers, and leave the RV parked at camp until Exodus.

Day 9: The Temple burns on the Sunday evening, around 8 pm in 2026, and closes to visitors at sunrise that day. Spend the day starting your MOOP sweep, packing loose items and arranging your last pump-out. Highs above 100°F (38°C) are common, so drink water and stay in shade through the afternoon.

Day 10: Event Ends

+
−

Day 10: The event ends at 6 pm on Monday 6 September. Walk your camp shoulder to shoulder, pick up everything including cigarette butts, and join the two-hour community clean-up if you can. Secure every load and keep water, snacks and fuel within easy reach, ready for an early start tomorrow.

Day 11: Exodus

+
−

Day 11: Leave very early, in the late evening or on Tuesday morning before noon. Gate Road took six to nine hours at its peak in past years, with Reno a few hours beyond that. Empty your tanks at a listed dump station, such as Love's in Fernley (825 Commerce Center Dr) or Golden Gate Petroleum in Sparks (1055 S Rock Blvd), then rest in Reno.

Days 12-13: Reno to Tonopah

+
−

Day 12: Give the RV a thorough clean inside and out, engine bay included, as Burning Man warns rentals can attract extra fees if returned dusty. Then drive south about 128 miles (206 km), roughly 2.7 hours, to Hawthorne and camp for the night near Walker Lake.

Day 13: Continue on US-95 about 103 miles (166 km), around 2 hours, to Tonopah. Fill up with fuel and stretch your legs at the Tonopah Historic Mining Park, then keep the evening quiet. Check the air conditioning, as the drive south to Las Vegas is long and hot.

Day 14: Tonopah to Las Vegas

+
−

Day 14: Drive south on US-95 about 211 miles (340 km), roughly 4 hours, to the Las Vegas depot. Refuel the tank to the level your agreement requires, check the depot's return hours and allow time for the return inspection. Take photos of the clean interior and exterior before you hand over the keys.

San Francisco to the Burns and Back (7 Days)

+

Days 1-2: San Francisco to Black Rock City

+
−

Day 1: Collect your RV in the Bay Area on Thursday 2 September, run Burning Man's pre-playa tank test and drive I-80 east about 218 miles (351 km), roughly 4.5 hours, over Donner Summit to Reno. Shop for food, ice and 1.5 gallons (5.7 litres) of water per person per day.

Day 2: Fill the fuel tank and leave Reno early on Friday 3 September, as Highway 447 is busiest from 11 am to midnight. It is about 106 miles (171 km) to Gerlach, then 8 miles (13 km) to the Gate. Park along the edge of your camp and keep the RV there.

Days 3-5: The Burns & the Last Day

+

Day 3: Saturday 4 September is the expected Man burn night, as Burning Man says the Man burns on the Saturday night before Labor Day, weather permitting. Buy a pump-out voucher at the Fire & Services sanitation office early in the day.

Day 4: The Temple burns on Sunday evening, around 8 pm in 2026, and closes to visitors at sunrise that day. Run the generator for at least an hour and top up batteries before the final night.

Day 5: The event ends at 6 pm on Monday 6 September. Do a grid sweep of your camp and pick up everything, including the smallest matter out of place, then pack the RV for an early exit.

Days 6-7: Exodus & Return

−

Day 6: Leave on Tuesday 7 September, ideally before noon, as the Survival Guide suggests. Empty your tanks at one of the listed dump stations in Fernley or Sparks and overnight near Reno.

Day 7: Give the RV a thorough clean inside and out, engine bay included, as Burning Man warns rentals can attract extra cleaning fees, then drive back over Donner Summit to return it in the Bay Area.

Essential Burning Man RV Tips

⛽ Fill Up Before Highway 447

Carry enough fuel to reach Black Rock City and return to Reno, Fernley or Lovelock, generator included. Gerlach and Empire sell gas, but lines are often long and supplies limited. Fill the tank in Reno or Wadsworth.

🚫 Park It and Leave It

A vehicle pass gets you in but does not allow driving inside the city. Park along the edge of your camp, not on a main street, and keep the RV there for the whole event. Plan to walk or cycle.

🚛 Book Your Pump-Out

There is no dump station in Black Rock City. Buy a voucher at the Fire & Services sanitation office, leave room for the truck as hoses reach only 30 feet (9 m), and have someone at camp when it arrives.

First Time Taking an RV to Burning Man?

⚠️ Check the Rental Contract

The Survival Guide warns that some rental contracts prohibit Burning Man use, and you must drive an RV in yourself, as outside vendors cannot deliver it. Confirm the terms, fees and cleaning charges before you book.

🌪️ Whiteouts and Heat

Daytime temperatures routinely pass 100°F (38°C), and dust storms can drop visibility to zero with winds above 75 mph (121 km/h). If you are driving when a whiteout hits, stop and wait for it to pass.

🧪 Test the Tanks First

Before you reach the playa, fill the fresh tank, run the sink for a minute and flush the toilet several times, checking for leaks. A spill of just one gallon (3.8 litres) can contaminate about five gallons of playa.

⏳ Plan Your Arrival and Exit

Waits can pass five hours in the first 36 hours after the Gate opens. Exodus queues ran six to nine hours at their peak in past years. Arrive Tuesday or later and leave very early or on Tuesday morning.

Choosing Your Pickup City for Burning Man

Every route ends on Highway 447 north of Reno, so the right pickup city is the one with a rental that allows Burning Man and the dates you need. Drive times are mapping estimates for a car to Gerlach, before the final 8 miles (13 km) and any Gate queue.

Only if the rental company allows it. Burning Man's Survival Guide warns that some rental contracts prohibit Burning Man use, and its FAQ says you must drive an RV in yourself, as an outside vendor cannot deliver it. Check each brand's terms, fees and cleaning charges before you book.

Do I need a vehicle pass for an RV?

Yes. Every vehicle driving into Black Rock City except motorcycles needs a vehicle pass in the windshield, and towed vehicles are exempt. In 2026 a pass cost US$165, with a maximum of one pass per two tickets. The 2027 price is not announced yet.

When do Burning Man 2027 tickets go on sale?

Are there RV hookups and can I run a generator?

There are no hookups in Black Rock City, so you rely on your RV's generator, batteries or solar. Burning Man's RV guide suggests running the generator at least an hour a day and says rental companies often include up to three hours of free generator time, then charge a small fee.

How do I empty grey and black water at Burning Man?

There is no dump station in Black Rock City, and dumping on the playa is banned; the BLM issues citations. Buy a voucher at the Fire & Services sanitation office, then flag down an RV pump truck (9 am to 9 pm). How much water do I need for an RV at Burning Man?

Burning Man's Survival Guide says to bring 1.5 gallons (5.7 litres) per person per day for drinking, washing and cleaning. Fill your fresh tank before the Gate and carry spare jugs. Watch the grey tank, as running water fills it quickly, and shower in the RV only every other day.

What is the drive from Reno to Burning Man?

Take I-80 east 28 miles (45 km) to Exit 43 at Wadsworth, then Highway 447 for 75 miles (121 km) to Gerlach, which is about 106 miles (171 km) and 2 hours from Reno. The city is 8 miles (13 km) on from the fork. Fill up first, as Gerlach and Empire gas supplies are limited. Avoid Jungo Road in an RV.

How long are the queues to get into Burning Man?

Burning Man says waits in the first 36 hours after the Gate opens can be five hours or more. Lines are usually shortest from about 3 am to 10 am, and arriving on Tuesday or later generally means shorter waits. Highway 447 is busiest from 11 am to midnight, so some travellers wait in Reno.

How bad is Exodus and when should I leave?

In past years Gate Road travel peaked at six to nine hours, with Reno a few more hours beyond, and the Survival Guide warns of up to 12 hours to the Reno airport at peak. It advises leaving very early, in the late evening or on Tuesday morning before noon. These are 2026 figures.

What if my RV leaks or I leave rubbish behind?
