About Trekker Adventures
Trekker Adventures is a small, locally owned New Zealand company, Trekker Adventures Limited, incorporated in 2015. It grew out of an interest in classic 4WDs and now rents Toyota Hilux utes and Land Rover Defenders fitted with rooftop tents, plus a few 4WD campers. It is not part of any rental group, and you can pick up in Auckland, Christchurch or Queenstown.
Most of the fleet is new Hilux dual cabs with one or two rooftop tents and a camp kitchen kit, alongside new-shape and classic Defender 110s. For more comfort, the Hilux Canopy Camper, a pop-top Land Cruiser Troopy and an all-wheel-drive Hiace van add a fridge, running water and a toilet. Kilometres are unlimited, but bedding costs extra and diesel road user charges are added at the end of the hire.
Is Trekker Adventures a good choice?
Trekker Adventures suits adventurous couples, friends and families who want a 4WD and rooftop tent rather than a campervan, with gravel roads and gentle off-roading allowed. Its Auckland base rates 4.8 out of 5 on Google from 42 reviews. The trade-offs are a NZ$7,500 standard excess, a 75% non-refundable deposit when you book and no toilet in the rooftop tent models, so compare Waka Campa if you want a self-contained campervan.

Trekker Adventures 4WD hire in New Zealand
Trekker Adventures rents seven types of 4WD or AWD vehicle, most of them automatic. The Hilux Single Tent and Hilux Double Tent are new diesel Toyota dual cabs with one or two rooftop tents, and the Defender 2020+ and the older Classic Defender 110 carry rooftop tents too. The Hilux Canopy Camper, the pop-top Land Cruiser Troopy and the Hiace AWD camper van add a fridge, water and a toilet.
Make and model are not guaranteed, and Trekker may supply a similar 4WD. Every vehicle comes with a gas cooker, cookware, a table and camp chairs, but bedding is a NZ$200 extra. The minimum hire is 5 days, kilometres are unlimited, and diesel road user charges are billed at the end of the hire.

Opening hours
Only Auckland has a published depot address: 2/22 Andrew Baxter Drive in Mangere, in the airport business area, and Auckland pick-ups need two days' notice. Christchurch and Queenstown pick-ups are arranged when you book, and Trekker asks you to confirm the city and vehicle with it before booking. Office hours are 8am to 5:30pm in all three cities, no airport shuttle is published, and one-way hires run between all three.
