Many brands restrict Cardrona Valley Road
Rhythm and Alps 2026 runs on 30 and 31 December at Robrosa Station in the Cardrona Valley, about 20 km south of Wānaka, and the festival has a dedicated Roadie Camp for certified self-contained campervans and rooftop tents. In our live search for 27 December 2026 to 3 January 2027, Queenstown campervans start from NZ$206 a night (4WD rooftop tent) and self-contained campers from NZ$328 a night. Roadie Camp costs NZ$70 a person plus NZ$125 a vehicle on top of your festival ticket, and several rental brands list the Cardrona Valley Road as a road their RVs must not use, so ask your brand in writing before you book.
Which rental brands suit Rhythm and Alps?
Eight brands returned campervans in our live Queenstown search for 27 December 2026 to 3 January 2027: Britz, Apollo, Mighty, Maui, Star RV, Jucy, Camperland and Trekker Adventures. Roadie Camp only accepts self-contained camping vehicles and rooftop tents, so the right brand depends on two things: whether the van is self-contained, and whether the brand lets it use the Cardrona Valley Road.
- Trekker Adventures (Queenstown and Christchurch): 4WD Hilux and Defender rooftop tent campers from NZ$206 a night, plus a self-contained Hilux Camper from NZ$328. Roadie Camp takes rooftop tents without self-containment. The Hilux listings include a gas cooker, which the festival bans in every campsite. We could not find Trekker's published road restrictions, so ask before you book.
- Camperland (Queenstown and Christchurch): the self-contained Trio, sleeping 3, from NZ$347 a night in Queenstown. Clause 11.2 of its terms names the Crown Range Road as a prohibited route for unauthorised travel, so get permission in writing for the Cardrona Valley.
- Jucy and Star RV: Jucy Chill'd Sundaze (sleeps 3, toilet and shower) from NZ$375 and Star RV Polaris 4 (sleeps 4, self-contained, on request) from NZ$574. The group's help page names Ninety Mile Beach, Ball Hut Road and Skippers Canyon Road, not the Crown Range, and says its vehicles are designed to stay on sealed roads. The Jucy Crib lists no toilet or rooftop tent, so it would not meet Roadie Camp rules.
- Mighty, Apollo, Britz and Maui: self-contained motorhomes with toilet and shower, from about NZ$539 (Mighty Deuce) to NZ$800 (Maui River Elite) a night. Each brand's own road restrictions list the Crown Range Road and Cardrona Valley Road as roads no RV should be driven on, and say travelling there without permission may void the liability option. The festival address is on the Cardrona Valley Road, so you need written permission or a different plan.
Christchurch is the alternative pickup. Our search for the same dates returned 26 vehicles from NZ$110 a night and added Lucky Rentals, Happy Campers, Spaceships, LyLo Road Trips and Escape Rentals to the list. Self-contained options there start from about NZ$157 a night (Escape), and the drive to the festival is about 430 km. How much does campervan hire cost for Rhythm and Alps?
Prices are NZ$ per night from our live Queenstown search for a pickup on 27 December 2026 and return on 3 January 2027 (30 vehicles, NZ$206 to NZ$800 a night). New Year is peak season, so rates move as vans sell out.
- Rooftop tent 4WD: NZ$206 a night (Trekker Single Tent Hilux, sleeps 2), NZ$263 (Double Tent Hilux) and NZ$413 (2020+ Defender, sleeps 2).
- Self-contained, 2 to 3 berth: NZ$328 (Trekker Hilux Camper, sleeps 2), NZ$347 (Camperland Trio, sleeps 3) and NZ$375 (Jucy Chill'd Sundaze, sleeps 3, on request).
- Motorhomes with toilet and shower: NZ$539 (Mighty Deuce), NZ$560 (Apollo Euro Tourer), NZ$574 (Star RV Polaris 4, on request), NZ$583 (Britz Venturer) and NZ$612 (Maui Ultima).
- 4 to 6 berth: NZ$692 (Mighty Double Up and Big Six), NZ$730 (Apollo Euro Deluxe, sleeps 6), NZ$773 (Britz Odyssey and Wanderer, sleeps 4) and NZ$800 (Maui River Elite, sleeps 6).
- Christchurch pickup: from NZ$110 a night, and self-contained from about NZ$157 (Escape, sleeps 2) for the same dates.
What the nightly rate leaves out
- Insurance excess options, kilometre charges, one-way fees (for example Christchurch to Queenstown) and extras such as bedding and kitchen kits. We did not price these.
- Festival costs, checked on the official ticket page on 19 October 2026: Full Festival Ticket NZ$350 (second release), Roadie Camp 2 Day Camping Pass NZ$70 (first release) per person, and a Roadie Camp Vehicle Pass NZ$125 per vehicle. Prices rise as each release sells out, and booking fees may apply.
- Two people in one van at today's prices: 2 x NZ$350 plus 2 x NZ$70 plus NZ$125 is NZ$965 for the festival. Four people: 4 x NZ$350 plus 4 x NZ$70 plus NZ$125 is NZ$1,805.
Where can you camp in a campervan at Rhythm and Alps?
Roadie Camp is the festival's dedicated zone for campervans, caravans, house buses, house trucks and rooftop tents. It is creekside with mountain views, and sites are non-powered. Standard tents are not allowed in Roadie Camp, sleeping in cars is prohibited, and the festival can refuse entry to any vehicle that does not meet the rules.
What you need to buy
- One festival ticket per person (Full Festival Ticket, NZ$350 in the second release).
- One 2 Day Camping Pass (Roadie Camp) per person, NZ$70 in the first release. Roadie Camp is 2 Day only, covering the nights of 30 and 31 December.
- One Vehicle Pass (Roadie Camp) per vehicle, NZ$125. It covers one self-contained camping vehicle, not each person.
Rules that affect a rental van
- Self-contained: vehicles must be self-contained to enter Roadie Camp, except those with a rooftop tent. Ask your rental brand for proof of certification. Since 7 June 2026 DOC says a green warrant is needed to be certified self-contained, and a toilet must be fixed to the vehicle floor.
- No gas cooking: gas cookers are banned in every Rhythm and Alps campsite, including inside campervans. BBQs and cookers of any sort are banned, so plan meals around the on-site food vendors and food that needs no cooking.
- No alcohol and no animals: the festival is strictly no BYO alcohol, bans animals except service dogs, and is R18 with photo ID required.
- Not published: we could not find a vehicle length limit, camp opening time or check-out time on the official site. Email info@rhythmandalps.co.nz before you buy if you are in a 6 berth motorhome.
Other options
If your rental brand will not let you drive the Cardrona Valley Road, park the van at a campground in Wānaka and ride the festival bus instead. Yello Buses run from Wānaka (NZ$38 return pre-booked), Queenstown (NZ$114 return) and Cardrona Village (NZ$28 return) on 30 and 31 December. Freedom camping is a separate matter: DOC land and council bylaws decide where a certified self-contained vehicle may stay, so read the signs and the DOC freedom camping rules. Full details are on the official ticket guide and FAQs.
How do you get from Queenstown to Rhythm and Alps in a campervan?
The festival is at Robrosa Station, 1653 Cardrona Valley Road, Wānaka. Rhythm and Alps lists Wānaka at about 20 km (15 minutes), Queenstown at about 45 km (40 to 50 minutes), Cromwell at 70 km, Dunedin at 275 km and Christchurch at 430 km (5.5 to 6 hours). Queenstown Airport is the closest major airport, about 45 minutes away.
Two routes from Queenstown
- Crown Range Road: about 67 to 69 km from Queenstown to Wānaka in around an hour, and the quickest way to the valley. It is steep and winding with hairpin bends. Queenstown Lakes District Council manages it and can require chains when conditions are snowy or icy, with a NZ$750 fine under its 2026 enforcement rules.
- State Highway 6 via Cromwell: about 117 km and 1 hour 15 minutes to Wānaka, then roughly 20 km south down the Cardrona Valley Road. Plan on about 135 km and 1.5 hours door to door. This is the safer road for campervans.
Check your brand's road rules first
Britz, Maui, Mighty and Apollo each publish a list of roads no RV may be driven on that includes the Crown Range Road/Cardrona Valley Road. Camperland names the Crown Range Road. The festival sits on the Cardrona Valley Road, so even the Cromwell route ends on a road these brands list. Ask for written permission for the festival before you pay a deposit. Jucy and Star RV do not name the Crown Range in their help page, but confirm with them too.
Other pickups, parking and buses
- Christchurch: about 430 km, 5.5 to 6 hours each way, with cheaper vans but more distance. Check one-way fees if you return to Queenstown.
- Parking: free parking on site, with a 5 to 10 minute flat walk from the car park to the start of the general campsite. Roadie Camp vehicles drive in with a Vehicle Pass.
- Buses: Yello Buses leave Frankton Bus Hub at 3:00pm and 6:00pm and return at 12:30am and 3:30am, pre-booked only. See the Yello Rhythm and Alps page.
- Roads home: do not drive after drinking. The adult breath limit is 250 micrograms per litre, and you can still be over it the morning after.

Rhythm and Alps campervan tips
- Get road permission in writing: Britz, Maui, Mighty and Apollo list the Crown Range Road/Cardrona Valley Road as off limits without permission. Keep the email with your rental papers.
- Buy the three passes together: every person needs a festival ticket and a 2 Day Roadie Camp pass, and the van needs one Vehicle Pass. Camping and vehicle passes are add-ons that need a matching festival ticket.
- Leave the gas cooker alone: gas cooking is banned in all campsites, so pack ready-to-eat food and use the on-site vendors. Sealed non-alcoholic drinks are allowed, alcohol is not.
- Dress for the night: the festival warns it often drops to single digits overnight in the valley, even after a hot day.
- Bring ID and a card: the event is R18 with a valid photo ID, and it is cashless. Only a current NZ licence, Kiwi Access 18+ card or passport is accepted.
- Book early: second release tickets are already on sale, and the Roadie Camp pass price rises as each release sells out.
