About maui
maui is the premium motorhome brand of Tourism Holdings (thl), the group that also runs Britz, Apollo and Mighty. It has rented motorhomes since 1982 and operates in Australia and New Zealand from the same 13 depots as its sister brands.
Every maui has a toilet and shower and is an automatic diesel. Australian vehicles are under 2 years old and New Zealand vehicles under 2.5 years, and the range runs from the 2-berth Ultima van to the 6-berth River. maui has no 4WDs, and every hire includes unlimited kilometres.
Is maui a good choice?
maui suits couples and families who want a newer motorhome with a full bathroom. Its Google branch ratings average 4.7 out of 5 across nearly 12,000 reviews, the highest of the thl brands we cover. The trade-offs are premium pricing and no pets, so travellers with a dog should look at Apollo or Britz.

All have reverse-cycle house air-con when connected to mains power. The Cascade and Sunset leave the fleet from 1 April 2027, and maui points travellers to the Beach and River instead.
One-way hires between Cairns, Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, Hobart and Adelaide cost AU$200, or AU$300 when Darwin, Broome, Alice Springs or Perth is at either end, and one-way trips have minimum hire periods of 7 to 28 days.

Frequently asked questions
Who owns maui?
maui belongs to Tourism Holdings (thl), the NZX-listed RV company based in Auckland that also owns Britz, Apollo, Mighty and Cheapa Campa. maui says it has rented motorhomes since 1982.
Where are maui's depots?
In Australia maui has depots in Adelaide, Alice Springs, Brisbane, Broome, Cairns, Darwin, Hobart, Melbourne, Perth and Sydney. In New Zealand it has depots in Auckland, Christchurch and Queenstown, all with a free airport shuttle.
How much is the maui bond?
With the included cover you are liable for up to $7,500 per incident. In Australia that $7,500 is debited from your card at pick-up and refunded after a clean return, which can take up to 14 business days. The High Road, from $67 a day, cuts the liability and the deposit to $0.
What is the biggest maui motorhome?
The 6-berth River, an overcab with three double beds and six seatbelts, up to 7.9 m long in Australia. The Australian 6-berth Sunset is similar but leaves the fleet from 1 April 2027.
What is the difference between maui and Britz?
Both are thl brands and share the same branches. maui is the premium line: every model has a toilet and shower, the vehicles are newer, and there are no 4WDs or pets. Britz has more budget campervans and the Australian 4WD range, and allows pets.
How old do you need to be to hire a maui?
Every driver must be 21 or older and hold a full licence. There is no upper age limit.
Are maui motorhomes self-contained in New Zealand?
Every NZ maui has a fixed toilet and fresh and waste tanks. maui confirms certified self-containment for the Ultima Plus, so check the green warrant for other models when you book if you plan to freedom camp.
Can I take my dog in a maui?
No. Pets are not allowed in maui vehicles, apart from registered guide or assistance dogs arranged in advance. Sister brands Britz, Apollo and Mighty do take pets.
Does maui include unlimited kilometres?
Yes, in both Australia and New Zealand. NZ hires also pay a road user charge of about NZ$8 per 100 km.
Does maui pick up from the airport?
In New Zealand, yes: Auckland, Christchurch and Queenstown all run free airport shuttles. In Australia there are no transfers, though Hobart is a short walk from the terminal and Perth is near Redcliffe train station.
What does a one-way maui hire cost?
In Australia it is AU$200 between the east and south coast branches, or AU$300 if Darwin, Broome, Alice Springs or Perth is at either end, with minimum hire periods of 7 to 28 days. In New Zealand it ranges from NZ$100 to NZ$300 depending on the route and season.
What is maui Elite?
A paid upgrade of about $55 to $57 a day that guarantees a motorhome less than a year old.
