About Lucky Rentals

Lucky Rentals is a budget campervan rental company in New Zealand, with depots near Auckland and Christchurch airports. Lucky Rentals Limited is privately owned, was set up in Auckland in 2010 and also runs Happy Campers from the same two depots. It part-owns GlobalCampers, which has owned Euro Campers since May 2026, so the three brands are linked and share the Auckland airport shuttle.

Lucky rents five plain white Toyota campervans, from the Lucky Rodeo sleeper van for two to the 4-berth Lucky Rover. Four models, the Roadie, Roadie+, Rambler and Rover, are certified self-contained with a fixed toilet, and the Rambler is the only one with a shower. Most vans were built between 2004 and 2014 and refitted later, and every hire includes unlimited kilometres and cooking gear.

Is Lucky Rentals a good choice?

Lucky Rentals suits travellers on a tight budget: there is no minimum or maximum driver age, the price is the same at any age, and booking direct needs only a NZ$99 deposit. Its Google branch ratings average 3.1 out of 5 across about 1,180 reviews, which is low compared with most brands we cover, and it scores 3.6 on Trustpilot. Reviewers like the price and the staff but often report old, high-mileage vans and faulty equipment, so compare Happy Campers, Spaceships or Mighty if vehicle condition matters more than price.

The Roadie (manual) and Roadie+ (automatic) are Hiace hi-tops with a double bed, a roof bed and a fixed toilet, the Rambler adds a hot shower, and the 4-berth Rover has two double beds and four seats.

Bedding packs cost NZ$25 per hire, a 240V fan heater NZ$15 and snow chains NZ$50. Christchurch to Auckland one-ways are free, while Auckland to Christchurch carries a fee shown in your quote, and most hires have a 5-day minimum, depending on the season.
