About Indie Campers
Indie Campers was founded in Lisbon, Portugal, in 2013 with three vans. Europe is still its core market, with around 70 pick-up points in 20 countries, and in March 2026 it completed its purchase of Just Go and Bunk Campers in the UK and Ireland from thl. Outside Europe it runs its own fleet from 33 depots: 7 in Australia, 3 in New Zealand, 19 in the USA and 4 in Canada. This page covers only those four countries. Indie also runs a marketplace where private and professional hosts list their own vans under their own rules; everything here is about Indie's own fleet. It is sometimes searched as Indie Camper, but the brand name is plural.
In Australia and New Zealand the fleet is mostly Fiat Ducato and LDV-based campervans and motorhomes, from the 2-berth Active Standard to the 6-berth Family Plus, plus a 4x4 ute with a rooftop tent. In the USA and Canada Indie rents American RVs: Class B pop-top vans, Class C and Class A motorhomes, a truck camper and a Jeep-style 4x4. You book a vehicle category rather than an exact model, and the distance package is sold as unlimited but carries a fair-use allowance per night.
Is Indie Campers a good choice?
For Australian, British and New Zealand travellers, Indie Campers suits anyone who wants a newer van with a toilet and shower, a pet on board or a one-way trip, from depots that open seven days. Its Google ratings average 4.4 out of 5 across more than 14,000 reviews of its 33 depots in these four countries, with Hobart (4.9) and Portland (4.8) the highest. Independent review sites are tougher, with Trustpilot at 3.6 and most complaints about damage charges and slow deposit refunds, so read the protection plans before you book. Its Australian and New Zealand vehicles are in our search, while US and Canadian RVs are booked direct with Indie.

Indie Campers campervan hire in Australia
Indie's Australian fleet has six models, all automatic: the Active Compact for two adults and a child, the 2-berth Active Standard, the Active Plus pop-top for 4, the Comfort Standard coachbuilt motorhome for 4, the Family Plus for 4 or 6, and the Adventure 4x4, an LDV dual-cab ute with a two-person rooftop tent, slide-out kitchen and awning. Every model except the 4x4 has a toilet and shower. The rooftop-tent 4x4 is listed at Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane, and Darwin and Hobart carry a smaller range.
The distance package has a fair-use allowance of 480 km a night, averaged over the trip. One-way hires between Australian depots are priced when you book, and vans can never go to New Zealand. The rental agreement limits vehicles to sealed roads with beaches off limits, so check with Indie before taking the 4x4 off the bitumen.

Opening hours
Indie has seven Australian depots: Sydney (Botany, about 3 km from the airport), Melbourne, Brisbane (Eagle Farm, near the airport), Cairns (Stratford), Darwin (East Arm, near the port), Perth (Hazelmere, east of the airport) and Hobart, where the depot is in Sorell, about 25 km east of the city and past Hobart Airport. There is no depot in Adelaide, Alice Springs, Broome or the Gold Coast. Depots open seven days, with returns typically 8:30 to 11:30am and pick-ups 2:30 to 6pm, and there are no airport shuttles. In the USA Indie rents American RVs, all automatic: the Active Plus, a Class B pop-top van for 4 with a wet bath; the California, a compact Mercedes-based pop-top with no bathroom; the Comfort and Family Class C motorhomes for 6 and 7; the Space, a Class A for up to 8; the Adventure Standard, a Jeep-style 4x4 with a rooftop tent; the Adventure Plus truck camper; and a travel trailer for 5 that you tow. The fair-use allowance is 340 miles a night, and generator use costs US$3.50 an hour plus a nightly access fee. RVs may cross into Canada but never Mexico, several Alaskan gravel highways are banned, and propane RVs can't enter Manhattan or road tunnels. Indie's US RVs aren't in our search, so compare prices on Indie's own site.

Indie Campers RV rental in Canada
Indie's Canadian fleet is a smaller version of its US range: the Active Plus Class B pop-top for 4, the Comfort and Family Class C motorhomes for 6 and 7, the Adventure Standard 4x4 with a rooftop tent, and the Adventure Plus truck camper. Toronto and Montreal don't offer the rooftop-tent 4x4, and there is no California, Space or Trailer in Canada.
The fair-use allowance is 530 km a night, the highest of the four countries. RVs can cross into the USA, and some one-way routes between the two countries are offered. Banned roads include the North Canol Highway in Yukon, the Trans-Labrador highways and the James Bay Road in Quebec, and the Dempster Highway is closed to rentals from mid-September to mid-May. Indie's Canadian RVs aren't in our search, so compare prices on Indie's own site.

Opening hours
The four Canadian depots are in Delta, south of Vancouver; Calgary, the gateway for Banff and Jasper; North York in Toronto; and Candiac on Montreal's south shore. All open seven days, with returns typically 8:30 to 11:30am and pick-ups 2:30 to 6pm, and none has an airport shuttle.

Frequently asked questions
Is Indie Campers legit?
Yes. Indie Campers is a Portuguese rental company founded in Lisbon in 2013, and it raised EUR 62.5 million from investors in 2024 and 2025. Its 33 depots in Australia, New Zealand, the USA and Canada average 4.4 out of 5 across more than 14,000 Google reviews. Trustpilot (3.6) and ProductReview are harsher, mostly over damage and deposit disputes.
Where are Indie Campers' depots?
In Australia: Sydney (Botany), Melbourne, Brisbane, Cairns, Darwin, Perth and Hobart (Sorell). In New Zealand: Auckland, Christchurch and Queenstown. In Canada: Vancouver (Delta), Calgary, Toronto and Montreal (Candiac). In the USA it has 19 depots from Los Angeles and Anchorage to Miami and Boston, and it also has around 70 pick-up points in Europe.
How much is the Indie Campers deposit, and is it charged?
It is normally a hold, not a charge, on a physical Visa, Mastercard or Amex at pick-up: about EUR 2,000 on the included Basic plan, EUR 800 on Standard and EUR 500 on Premium, in local currency. If your bank can't place a hold, the amount is charged and refunded later. Release starts about six days after return and usually takes a further 5 to 7 bank days.
Is Indie Campers mileage really unlimited?
It is sold as unlimited, but a fair-use allowance applies, averaged over the whole trip: 480 km a night in Australia, 410 km in New Zealand, 340 miles in the USA and 530 km in Canada. Distance beyond that is charged from EUR 0.30 per km.
Can I do a one-way hire with Indie Campers?
Yes, between many depots in the same country, and on some routes between the USA and Canada, with the fee shown before you pay. Changing the drop-off city after booking costs the fare difference plus a EUR 250 transfer fee. Australian vans can never go to New Zealand, or the reverse.
How old do you need to be to hire from Indie Campers?
21 or over in Australia, the USA and Canada; Indie doesn't publish a New Zealand minimum, so confirm it when you book. Drivers under 25 are limited to the Basic or Standard protection plans, as the Premium zero-excess plan needs drivers aged 25 or over.
Can I take my dog in an Indie Campers van?
Yes. One pet travels free in Indie's own fleet. Dogs over 30 kg need the paid after-trip cleaning, and a EUR 125 pet cleaning fee applies if fur is left behind. Marketplace hosts set their own pet rules.
Do Indie campervans have a toilet and shower?
Most do. In Australia and New Zealand every Active, Comfort and Family model has a fixed toilet and shower, while the 4x4 with a rooftop tent has neither. In North America the California pop-top and the Adventure Standard 4x4 have no bathroom.
Can I freedom camp in New Zealand with Indie Campers?
Indie states that the Active Bunk, Active Plus and Comfort Standard are certified self-contained with fixed toilets, which New Zealand requires for freedom camping. The 4x4 with a rooftop tent is not, so check the green warrant on your vehicle and the local bylaws.
Does Indie Campers have an airport shuttle?
No. Vans are collected only at depots and there is no airport pick-up or shuttle, so take a taxi, rideshare or public transport. Some depots are a long way out, such as Sorell for Hobart, Tacoma for Seattle and Norton for Boston.
What is an Indie Campers Select vehicle?
Select is not a different layout. It is a brand-new, current-model-year vehicle in the same category, offered at a higher rate than the standard version.
Can I take an Indie Campers vehicle to another country?
Australian and New Zealand vehicles must stay in their country of pick-up. US and Canadian RVs can cross between the two countries but never into Mexico, and several Alaskan and northern Canadian gravel highways are banned.
